Live football scores: Socceroos vs Brazil from the MCG, Australia

The Socceroos have a strong record on home - in particular in World Cup qualifiers - but that was the heaviest defeat on home soil in 37 years since Australia lost 5-0 to Czechoslovakia. 

A lot of questions are being pointed at the Socceroos and this time, the players rather than the coach. The nature of the goals rather than the number were the most problematic, individual errors and poor defending on set pieces. 

Australia's opponents don't get too much easier with Germany, Chile and Cameroon awaiting in Russia for the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Tim Cahill: "There's a lot of class in their team that showed in the end."

"I think for us the biggest benchmark was playing against the best and tonight was a lesson we wanted and it was something we needed to embrace."

Ange Postecoglou: "The first half was decent, we were pretty happy with the way we were structured... the second half fell away to be fair and it was probably my responsibility, I made some changes, we got a bit disjointed, a bit stretched and they took advantage of that."

Here is what the Socceroos had to say. 

Robbie Kruse: "It's disappointing to take the result, 4-0, but we'll build on this."

James Troisi: "It was a good experience, obviously a terrible start but I think when we look at the game, we took it to them but I think the most disappointing thing [was] unforced errors.....Most of the goals we conceded were unforced errors which I think we need to iron out."

Full-time: Brazil win 4-0 and in truth, it could have been more. The world's top ranked nation were in cruise control as they thumped the Socceroos with ease and without a few of their biggest stars, namely Neymar, Marcelo, Dani Alves and Lucas Moura. 

At times it was like watching men against boys, such was the gulf in class and while there were spells where Australia impressed, they were too short and infrequent. It was a better performance than their 6-0 mauling in 2013 but coach Ange Postecoglou and the Australian public alike would be wanting more come the Confederations Cup next week.

92nd min: Diego Sousa has his second of the night after pouncing on a corner to slam a free header into the net. Lazy defending from Australia, a very disappointing way to end the match from the Socceroos perspective but on the balance of play, fair for Brazil. 

92nd min: Langerak is forced to make a brilliant save from none other than his teammate, Ajdin Hrustic. The substitute's attempted clearance is a rocket shot in the end but luclkily thwarted by his goalkeeper. 

88th min: Another big save from Mitch Langerak denies Taison a second goal. 
Langerak's saves have done little to make a difference to the result but he's certainly put pressure on Mat Ryan's no.1 spot for the Socceroos. 

And on another note, how good is that the player whose name is pronounced "Tyson" in this game plays for Brazil?

86th min: Brazil are effortlessly toying with Australia, pulling the strings from one corner of the field to another and it is simply a joy to watch, for some. For others, they might feel like Kent Brockman


 

83rd min: Substitution for Brazil, Paulinho is replaced by Renato Augusto. 

81st min: Australia are looking stronger in possession with Mooy and Rogic on the field together while the lively Jamie Maclaren and Ajdin Hrustic threaten to find space. 

Threaten to find space. That's probably best describes just how difficult this evening has been for the Socceroos. 

Brazil leads 3-0. 

Attendance: 48,847. 

Not bad but far from something to celebrate though. Ticket prices haven't been well received by some and perhaps with the Argentina v Brazil friendly just four days earlier, many spoke with their feet. 

78th min: Three changes for Australia, Massimo Luongo is replaced by Aaron Mooy. 

Dylan McGowan comes to make his debut in place of Bailey Wright while Tom Rogic comes on for James Troisi. 

Football fans, feast your eyes on this. 

Taison makes amends for his earlier miss by sealing a simply brilliant team goal. The interplay between Willian and Paulinho leaves Australia's defence in tatters and Taison has the simple task of slotting the ball into the corner for his first international goal. 

Brazil lead 3-0. 

74th min: Another big save from Langerak. The Stuttgart goalkeeper times his run perfectly to block a one-on-one with Taison to keep the score at 2-0. 

73rd min: David Luiz is replaced by Fernandinho. 

Brazil's two best of the evening, Luiz and Coutinho, are no longer on the field, much to the relief of Australia. 

71st min: Another sloppy turnover is pounced on by Willian who finds Diego Sousa free inside the box but his first time shot is thwarted by a well-positioned save from Langerak. 

A real let-off for Australia.
