Emma Young - Reporter

Emma is a self described "nerd journo", with passions for subjects such as waste management, town planning and chemicals regulation.

Despite their occasional lack of sex appeal, her stories about fruit fly, Aboriginal stolen wages and heroic hospital staff have won her two WA Media Awards – the first, Best New Journalist or Cadet, in 2012 and the second, Suburban – Best Three News Stories, in 2014.

A word of warning: her talent ends abruptly at sports stories. Early on in her career she once narrowly avoided publishing a story about 'rugby' team Perth Glory – an editor snatched it back just in time.

She hastens to add that if your tastes differ from hers you can surely agree on her ultra-clickable weather stories, which may or may not contain Game of Thrones references.

Moving from a weekly deadline at a suburban paper to an hourly one online has certainly had its challenges, but she gratefully accepts people gently pointing out her (rare) typos and is finding it an exciting challenge to bring people the news they want, and the news they need.

Sometimes, hopefully, it will even be both at the same time.
