Catalonia is a prosperous region in the northeast of Spain, a state formed by 17 territories and two cities, partially autonomous, governed by the Statute of Autonomy. That's part of the Spanish constitution which establishes the limits of self-rule for each region.
But Catalonian history dates back to the days before Spain was even a nation.
The Catalonian national identity has survived throughout the centuries, including persecution during the military government of Francisco Franco from 1938 to 1973. At that time, speaking Catalan, or any other language that wasn't Spanish, was considered a crime.
After Franco, Catalonia recovered its cultural autonomy and partial political control. Catalan was, once again, freely spoken and the Catalonian flag, one of the oldest in Europe, could wave again next to the Spanish one. However, questions of where Catalonia will stand with the European Union should it have the measures of political control it seeks is also in question. The President of the regional government Carles Puigdemont says Catalonia has more than proved itself to the EU.
"Catalonia has always been a region that contributes positively to the European Union, not negatively. Catalonia is a region that represents 2% of European GDP. It's dynamic with growth of above 3.5% in the last year."
In recent years, independence sentiments have risen among Catalans. Puigdemont is even calling for a referendum on the issue, despite opposition from Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who calls this effort "unconstitutional". As a matter of fact, Spain refuses to discuss the matter altogether.
"We haven't started because Spain doesn't want to negotiate. In Madrid there are all manners of opinion. Some believe it is not constitutional... it is perfectly constitutional to ask the question. There is a legal channel by which to ask in Catalonia. It's a matter of political will," says Puigdemont.

Catalonia consists of four provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. Catalonia is a prosperous region in the northeast of Spain, a state formed by 17 territories and two cities, partially autonomous, governed by the Statute of Autonomy. That's part of the Spanish constitution which establishes the limits of self-rule for each region.
But Catalonian history dates back to the days before Spain was even a nation.
The Catalonian national identity has survived throughout the centuries, including persecution during the military government of Francisco Franco from 1938 to 1973. At that time, speaking Catalan, or any other language that wasn't Spanish, was considered a crime.
After Franco, Catalonia recovered its cultural autonomy and partial political control. Catalan was, once again, freely spoken and the Catalonian flag, one of the oldest in Europe, could wave again next to the Spanish one. However, questions of where Catalonia will stand with the European Union should it have the measures of political control it seeks is also in question. The President of the regional government Carles Puigdemont says Catalonia has more than proved itself to the EU.
"Catalonia has always been a region that contributes positively to the European Union, not negatively. Catalonia is a region that represents 2% of European GDP. It's dynamic with growth of above 3.5% in the last year."
In recent years, independence sentiments have risen among Catalans. Puigdemont is even calling for a referendum on the issue, despite opposition from Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who calls this effort "unconstitutional". As a matter of fact, Spain refuses to discuss the matter altogether.
"We haven't started because Spain doesn't want to negotiate. In Madrid there are all manners of opinion. Some believe it is not constitutional... it is perfectly constitutional to ask the question. Catalonia is a prosperous region in the northeast of Spain, a state formed by 17 territories and two cities, partially autonomous, governed by the Statute of Autonomy. That's part of the Spanish constitution which establishes the limits of self-rule for each region.
But Catalonian history dates back to the days before Spain was even a nation.
The Catalonian national identity has survived throughout the centuries, including persecution during the military government of Francisco Franco from 1938 to 1973. At that time, speaking Catalan, or any other language that wasn't Spanish, was considered a crime.
After Franco, Catalonia recovered its cultural autonomy and partial political control. Catalan was, once again, freely spoken and the Catalonian flag, one of the oldest in Europe, could wave again next to the Spanish one. However, questions of where Catalonia will stand with the European Union should it have the measures of political control it seeks is also in question. The President of the regional government Carles Puigdemont says Catalonia has more than proved itself to the EU.
"Catalonia has always been a region that contributes positively to the European Union, not negatively. Catalonia is a region that represents 2% of European GDP. It's dynamic with growth of above 3.5% in the last year."
In recent years, independence sentiments have risen among Catalans. Puigdemont is even calling for a referendum on the issue, despite opposition from Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who calls this effort "unconstitutional". As a matter of fact, Spain refuses to discuss the matter altogether.
"We haven't started because Spain doesn't want to negotiate. In Madrid there are all manners of opinion. Some believe it is not constitutional... it is perfectly constitutional to ask the question. There is a legal channel by which to ask in Catalonia. It's a matter of political will," says Puigdemont.

Empuriabrava, with its canals and lagoons is the Venice of Costa Brava. Girona’s old, labyrinth-like city core is one of the most beautiful ones in Spain. Lloret de Mar is inviting the visitor with the promise of the Mediterranean night, being the center of Europe’s beach discos. Tossa de Mar is the most beautiful place of the whole coast, where the bastions of the old fort stand guard over the magnificent beach. Not even 100 kilometers from Costa Brava there is the Catalonian capital, the city of Gaudi, the ‘stage for the zest of life’, one of Europe’s most beautiful and livable cities, Barcelona

The Costa Brava, the ‘wild coast’ is the coast of Catalonia, which, with its yearly 50 million visitors, is one of Europe’s largest holiday paradises. The mild, Mediterranean climate, the crystal clear water, the mysterious, rocky bays, the long, sandy beaches, the southern flora, the wonders of the Spanish and Catalonian cuisine, the historical monuments and artistic values invite more and more visitors each year. Such artists were living and creating here as Salvador Dali, Anton Gaudi, Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Joan Miro. Cadeques is a city of arts, an untouched fishing village, which also has one of Europe’s largest artistic collections. Figueras is mostly known for its Dali museum. They say that once they kept the Holy Grail in the fort above the picturesque San Pere de Rodes monastery. Basalu, which is famous of its stone bridge, is a travel to the Middle Ages. Empuriabrava, with its canals and lagoons is the Venice of Costa Brava. Girona’s old, labyrinth-like city core is one of the most beautiful ones in Spain. Lloret de Mar is inviting the visitor with the promise of the Mediterranean night, being the center of Europe’s beach discos. Tossa de Mar is the most beautiful place of the whole coast, where the bastions of the old fort stand guard over the magnificent beach. Not even 100 kilometers from Costa Brava there is the Catalonian capital, the city of Gaudi, the ‘stage for the zest of life’, one of Europe’s most beautiful and livable cities, Barcelona

This week we are exploring another Spanish city. We are in Barcelona and this video is going to highlight 25 things to do here.
It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. Globe Trekker Megan McCormick travels to Barcelona in the Spanish region of Catalunya where she discovers a culture which prides itself on being different. With its sunkissed beaches, and Gothic palaces it’s an Olympian city worthy of the gods and the modernist capital of the world where some of the greatest artists on earth found their fame.
First off, Megan travels back in time to the city’s “grey years” - between the end of the civil war and General Franco’s death – when there was a huge zest for change, to move on to a new era. It stoked the desire to transform the city itself, while the Olympic Games bid and then the Games themselves provided extra incentive, not to mention cash. The finest architects and urban planners were persuaded to take part in this vision. Next off, she hits the Museu Picasso - the most visited art gallery in Barcelona which caters to approximately 1 million visitors annually and houses the largest collection of Picasso’s work in the world.
Next off, Megan indulges in some retail therapy taking in the iconic Las Ramblas - “rambla” means “torrent” in Arabic and it seems this boulevard was once a dried watercourse, paved over for public use in the Middle Ages. Her shopping trip ends at they city harbour where she takes in the colourful atmosphere of street performers, artists, and street vendors. She explores the Barrí Gotic - or Gothic Area - which combines the best of both worlds: shopping and culture. This the original Roman centre of Barcelona is home to bizarre antique shops, old bookshops, and thriving young fashion designers. She window-shops culinary delights like Casa del Bacau -The House of Cod - which sells only cod. Along the way she is intrigued by a shop window draped in black curtains – the Rey de La Magia was founded by famous magician Joachim Partagas 125 years ago and has been supplying great magicians ever since.
Next, she takes a road trip out of town to Cap De Creus - a haven for migratory birds and exotic fauna, it was pronounced a natural park in 1998. She journeys on to Port Lligat near where she visits the home of the surrealist painter: Salvador Dali. Along the way she takes in the picture postcard fishing town of Cadaques where Dali used to spend his summer holidays as a child and where he produced his first paintings. Opting for a sun sea and sand session, she takes a train to Sitges which is a Mecca for the gay community. This whitewashed town is clustered around a 16th century church on a promontory called La Punta. It became a resort thanks to the annual Modernista Festival organised here in the 1890s by Catalan artist Santiago Rusinyol.
She rounds off her trip and last day in Barcelona with a cable car trip up Mount Montjuic- a lush natural paradise filled with history and art – where and visits Montjuic Castle at the very summit of the Olympic mountain. Globe Trekker Megan McCormick travels to Barcelona in the Spanish region of Catalunya where she discovers a culture which prides itself on being different.
