Antarctica (US English

Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents. The temperature in Antarctica has reached −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F), though the average for the third quarter (the coldest part of the year) is −63 °C (−81 °F). There are no permanent human residents, but anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the year at the research stations scattered across the continent. Organisms native to Antarctica include many types of algae, bacteria, fungi, plants, protista, and certain animals, such as mites, nematodes, penguins, seals and tardigrades. Vegetation, where it occurs, is tundra.

Mount Erebus
Mount Erebus /ˈɛrᵻbəs/ is the second highest volcano in Antarctica (after Mount Sidley) and the southernmost active volcano on earth. It is the sixth highest ultra mountain on an island. With a summit elevation of 3,794 metres (12,448 ft), it is located on Ross Island, which is also home to three inactive volcanoes, Mount Terror, Mount Bird, and Mount Terra Nova.
The volcano has been active since ~1.3 million years ago and is the site of the Mount Erebus Volcano Observatory run by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.
Geology and volcanology
Mount Erebus is currently the most active volcano in Antarctica and is the current eruptive zone of the Erebus hotspot. The summit contains a persistent convecting phonolitic lava lake, one of five long-lasting lava lakes on Earth. Characteristic eruptive activity consists of Strombolian eruptions from the lava lake or from one of several subsidiary vents, all within the volcano's inner crater. The volcano is scientifically remarkable in that its relatively low-level and unusually persistent eruptive activity enables long-term volcanological study of a Strombolian eruptive system very close (hundreds of metres) to the active vents, a characteristic shared with only a few volcanos on Earth, such as Stromboli in Italy. Scientific study of the volcano is also facilitated by their proximity to McMurdo Station (U.S.) and Scott Base (N.Z.), both sited on Ross Island approximately thirty-five kilometres away.

It could be an underground base (or complex), used by spacecrafts or other devices, but it could also be a natural cave (very huge!) I show you in this video the whole thing, with a photo taken from the ground. I also show you the size of a person next to this huge thing.

Antarctica is a land of extremes: it is the coldest and driest continent on Earth and has the highest average elevation. As the fifth largest continent in the world, Antartica is also the most Southern, overlying the "South Pole". Scarcely touched by humans, the frozen land boasts breathtaking scenery, broken by only a handful of scientific bases and a "permanent" population of scientists numbering only a few thousand. Visitors to Antarctica generally must brave rough sea crossings aboard ice-strengthened vessels, but those who do are rewarded with amazing scenery and tremendous and unique wildlife.
Destinations
=============
The primary destinations for those visiting Antarctica will either be a research base (for those working on the frozen continent) or the Antarctic Peninsula or Ross Sea area (for those visiting by ship). Other destinations are reachable only by those blessed with extreme motivation and (most importantly) funding.
South Pole — needs no introduction
Southern pole of inaccessibility — the furthest place in Antarctica from the Southern Sea (in other words the hardest place to get to in the world), home to an abandoned Soviet station, which although covered by snow, still bears a visible gold Lenin bust sprouting from the snow and facing Moscow (if you can find a way inside the building, then there's a golden visitor book to sign)
Mount Erebus — world's southernmost active volcano, on Ross Island right next to ~Mount Terror!~
Anver Island / Anvord Bay — if any part of Antarctica is "touristy," this is it, home to Palmer Station (U.S.), the museum at Port Lockroy, Cuverville Island, and the only two cruise ship stops on the continent: Paradise Bay and Neko Harbor
South Shetland Islands — another set of major attractions on the Antarctic Peninsula cruise ship circuit, including: penguins and hot springs at Deception Island, Hannah Point, Half Moon Island, Aitcho Islands, Artigas Base (Uruguay), and the ever friendly Polish researchers at Arctowski Station
McMurdo Sound — McMurdo Station (USA) and Scott Base (New Zealand) on the mainland near Ross Island
Mawson's Huts — the small encampment of Sir Douglas Mawson's ill-fated Australian Antarctic Expedition, of which he was the sole survivor, at Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay

Our expedition begins in Longyearbyen on the island of Spitsbergen from where we are going to travel by cruise ship to the remotest locations of the Arctic. Our ship, the Plancius, was originally the oceanographic research ship of the Dutch monarchy. In Zodiacs - robust inflatable boats - we get our first real sense of the Arctic Ocean. We travel alongside the 14th of July Glacier while the boatman skilfully manoeuvres between fragments of floating icebergs. At Ny Ålesund we reach the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. This area was mined until 1963 and a coal train once led to a loading station on the nearby shore. The journey through the Liefdefjorden is part of every trip to the Arctic. Several glaciers form the typical landscape. Sixty per cent of the island is covered with ice, thick accumulations of both snow and ice that slowly move to the coast by their own weight. Polar bears wait in ambush and surprise their prey. Seals and whales must surface in order to breathe: it is then that the white giants attack. We head south again, leaving the pack ice behind and now our next experience, the sight of Humpback Whales. The voyage takes us past the Bråsvellbreen Glacier whose snow-white front impressively demonstrates the incredible power of this world of ice. Ice falls can create a dangerous current for ships, and the passage between the islands can be quite hazardous. The icy world of the Arctic is a habitat for rare wildlife, bizarre landscapes and great explorers. A realm of ice and the largest wilderness on Earth!

The boat makes its way along the coastline of a land of icebergs, glaciers and snow covered islands on the coldest, driest and most deserted continent on Earth. The journey through the Lemaire Channel is one of the most spectacular maritime passages one could ever experience. Everything looks absolutely newly-created. The channel is about fifteen kilometres long and up to a hundred metres wide, with snow covered islands and icebergs. Well sheltered between huge icebergs and the immense glaciers of the high mainland mountains, is Paradise Bay that, as its name suggests, is a place of calm as well as being a natural harbour. Elephant Island is the northernmost of the South Shetland Islands, the last bastion of the Antarctic that towers majestically from amid the Antarctic Ocean and is inhabited by penguins and seals. Stanley is the capital of the Falkland Islands, a far-flung outpost of the former British Empire. The region contains seven hundred islands of which twenty nine are inhabited. The ship’s passengers are mesmerised by the spell of the Arctic Circle, by its wildlife, its unique beauty and dramatic landscapes. The grand adventure comes to an end. Long live Antarctica!

Seeing its snow covered mountains and beaches covered with wildlife, one becomes even more aware of the amazing beauty of this region yet also the delicate balance of the Antarctic and its wildlife.
It is a tranquil natural landscape where thousands of penguin inhabit the bays and hills along with endearing seals living in a habitat of icebergs, glaciers and vast empty spaces of ice.
No other continent is as unexplored and undiscovered and for scientists, it continues to possess many enigmas and secrets yet to be revealed.
The Antarctic is one of the last paradises on Earth and a marvel of unique wildlife and scenic splendor.

This is an overview of the perfect travel rig for shooting professional photo and video. The foundation is two carry-ons that can be easily transported between cars, planes, hotels, and the field. This rig is meant for a solo-operator, in an extreme location, when time, space and image quality are crucial concerns. It is optimized for quick setup and breakdown. This rig is "lightweight" relative to a full pro kit -- it is not intended to replace a hobbyist's backpack.

The 1DC is the primary photo unit, also used for 4K video when appropriate (weather sealed). The C100 is the primary video unit, thanks to the autofocus and waveform monitoring. Three lenses cover 16-200mm focal lengths and can be used on both cameras. Accessories include ND filters, external SSDs, tripod, and storage. The two storage units operate best when combined with a small shoulder bag or sling, to use when walking far distances with either camera. A note on the A7s below.

There are a number of different options that would work just as well for this rig setup. I personally prefer the Canon image and found that this combination was best for traveling in Iceland and most recently, Antarctica. Obviously a camera like the Sony A7s would be lighter, but in testing, it proved to have worrisome battery life and awkward ergonomics; it's also not weather-sealed. The 1DC is bulletproof, has a better image to my eye, and is shooting 4K internal -- all combined with an absurd photo-platform.
*I did not bring any loupes, like the Zacuto Z-finder, because taking them on/off can be really annoying when going quickly in and out of a case or bag. For the C100 I relied on the waveform to ensure proper exposure and autofocus to ensure accurate image. On the 1DC, when I did shoot video, I did my best to use the LCD and shot a little under to protect the highlights.

How it came about:
I have traveled extensively as a single woman. This has included two years in India and Nepal, as well as travel through Asia, the USA and many parts of Europe. I had to learn on the go, the hard way, how to dress, how to behave, how to navigate crazy bus stations in a foreign language and how to not gain weight in countries where they would look at you as though you were crazy if you went jogging down the street! I have been asked over and over again how I was able to travel safely as a ‘single’ woman. Beyond that, I want to show women that we have many options with travel. I would like to get more ladies out into the great wide open! This show will inspire the upwardly mobile career woman, the housewife and the trepid new single gal, who wants more from life.

Canadian filmmaker Apolla Echino was tired of seeing men get to have all the fun in adventure films and is on a one-woman mission to change that around. Her documentary series, A Woman’s Guide To The World, has taken her aboard a tall ship sailing to Antarctica and into the wildest corners of the Amazon jungle. But it’s the latest chapter, a wintertime surf trip across the stunning South Island of New Zealand that has attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers from across the globe.
The film charts Apolla's journey from the breathtaking Kaikoura coastline, south to the Catlins and west to the wild and remote Jackson Bay. Apolla even chances upon a freshwater break at the mouth of the Buller River - a rare event that only occurs a dozen times a year. In the freezing New Zealand winter, Apolla is often the only surfer in the water - a fate that she says was both intimidating and exhilarating, “At times I wondered what the hell I was doing taking such a gutsy trip.”
It’s a sacrifice she felt it was necessary to take in order to show other woman what is possible. Apolla says she wants other women to be inspired by her films, “I started the series with the hope it might encourage women to be the subject of their own adventure stories.”
“Solo travelling is one of the greatest ways I have found to build a deep and lasting relationship with yourself,” says Apolla. “It forces you to rely on your instincts, to hone a deep trust in your ability to rise to a challenge and in the quieter moments of the journey, to turn inward.”
Remarkably, Apolla only started surfing in her 30s after a relocation to Los Angeles from New York, “I bought a 9’4 board and found my sweet spot as a long-boarder. I loved the laid back vibe of it and the sturdy feel of it under my feet on a wave.” Now that same green board with a heart on it that she’d surfed in California accompanies her throughout the film as she journeys across the South Island.
Despite donning a 5.5mm wetsuit, the cold was a constant on the trip, “Since I was surfing every day and sleeping without electricity at night, my wetsuit, booties and gloves never had the chance to dry. Putting on the wet gear in the morning after a cold night was never pleasant,” she says.
This surf, adventure film is not without an emotional undertow. The trip came at a challenging time for Apolla who was in the early throes of a relationship breakup. She says the time spent alone out in the water was actually the perfect medicine, “If you ever have to make a big life call, doing it out in the surf is the way to do it. You feel calm, quiet and connected to something bigger than yourself.”

CALIFORNIA KELP FOREST
--Kelp can grow two feet (60 cm) per day under perfect conditions.
--Kelp habitats are the rainforests of the ocean -- they enable tons of species to thrive.
--Algin, a kelp product, is an important ingredient in ice cream, toothpaste and many other items.
HAWAII
--Mauna Kea is 33,476 feet (10,203 m) high -- taller than Everest -- from seafloor to summit.
--Because Hawaii is so isolated, it is home to many species found nowhere else on earth.
--Hawaii lies within a swirling system of currents called the North Pacific Gyre.
MARIANA TRENCH
--Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench, is the deepest place on earth, 6.8 miles (10,994m) down.
--Light only reaches through the top 200 meters of water, so most of the ocean is pitch black, but many animals in the deep sea make their own light.
--Humans visited Challenger Deep in 1960. Nobody returned until 52 years later.
--Scientists still don't know what lives there.
GREAT BARRIER REEF
--The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on earth, at 1,615 miles (2,300km) long, and was made by billions of individual corals growing over thousands of years.
--The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park protects an area the size of Germany.

--The Southern Ocean has stronger winds and larger waves than any other ocean. In the winter months, the waves may average about 6 meters (20 feet) high.

Have you ever wondered why you have been sunburnt on a cloudy day? Harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can still penetrate the earth's atmosphere. The total dose of UV radiation reaching the earth's surface, and hence the potential damage to human skin and tissues, varies, depending on many factors.
The sun's elevation in the sky depends on the time of the day and year. The shorter the distance that photons of UV radiation need to travel though the earth's atmosphere, the greater the intensity of UV on earth. The altitude of a location also effects UV radiation levels, as the higher a location is above sea level, the shorter the distance UV radiation needs to travel to reach the land.
The thinning of the ozone layer located above Antarctica has had a considerable impact on the ability of the atmosphere to absorb UVB: a significant contributor to the increased incidence of skin cancer and other damage to human tissues which has been observed in populations bordering the ozone hole.
Clouds act on UV, primarily, by scattering radiation. This effect can either reduce or enhance UV radiation levels, depending on the type of cloud cover. Some clouds absorb infrared radiation and as a result of the diminished heat sensation, people are given a false sense of security. They often change their behaviour on cloudy days, unaware that they are exposing themselves to this potential danger.
UV radiation is also reflected from surfaces such as sand, snow and water. These surfaces can increase the UV radiation at ground level and increase the amount of skin damage incurred from UV radiation exposure.
When all these factors are considered, it is important to recognise that the net potential UV risk is a result of these associated variables and will depend on an individual's circumstances. The only sure way to significantly reduce the risk of skin damage is with vigilant protection from UV radiation and light, known as photoprotection.
