Salem Health Update 02-07-2017
Hello everybody! I’m Chad A. Ludwig, President of Oregon Association of the Deaf. I wanted to talk with you about Salem Health Hospital based in Salem. Salem Health has many offices throughout the Salem metro area.
On Friday, January 28th, Salem Health asked me to meet with them. I looked forward to the meeting. We started our relationship after we expressed our community's concern about their interpreting accommodations. The instances began about 2-3 years ago and we have kept in touch since that time. They asked if I would come meet with them.
During the meeting we focused on two issues: The first issue was providing interpreting services for nights and weekends. The second issue was regarding complaints that the hospital received about the gender of an interpreter. Currently, Salem Health employs a full time interpreter who happens to be a male. They do not have a full time female sign language interpreter.
Some female patients are concerned about having a male sign language interpreter. They would prefer a female interpreter, but this can cause several conflicts. Regarding the second issue of a male and female sign language interpreter; in our discussion we came up with some ideas on how Salem Health can improve this issue.
Returning to the first issue about covering interpreter services during nights and weekends; Salem Health is concerned that some patients have expressed their serious anger with Salem Health for not providing onsite sign language interpreters during evenings and weekends. We thoroughly discussed this issue and I was able to learn few things Salem Health has contracts with about 5 different ASL and foreign language interpreter agencies. Two are foreign language interpreter agencies and the other three are ASL-only interpreting agencies.
When the patients arrive at the hospital and requests an ASL interpreter they turn down the video remote interpreting station that is readily available. Salem Health contacts these five agencies requesting an on-site ASL interpreter. Salem Health faces this challenge; of the three ASL only interpreting agencies, two of them are only open from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. The third ASL only interpreting agency can do nights and weekends, but sometimes they are unable to find an interpreter to fill the job. The last two are foreign language interpreting agencies.
The challenge for these agencies is that their ASL interpreters lives far away and the interpreters are not willing to work during nights and weekends. This presents a challenge to Salem Health as they continue to struggle to recruit interpreters to work onsite during nights and weekends. Salem Health is in a position that they need to use a video remote interpreting station while they await confirmation that an onsite interpreter is on their way during night and weekend hours. We have discussed this challenge and shared some ideas and some potential solutions.
Salem Health appreciated our discussion and they will look at our suggestions. Salem Health expresses their gratitude and asked me to share this with you. Salem Health does not want to deny your request for an onsite ASL interpreter. They do want to offer you the service, however, they are stuck. Salem Health strives to work and improve communication accessibility for their patients. Their goal is to make sure their patients are satisfied with the communication services provided by Salem Health. Salem Health and OAD have discussed these issues and will work through information that brought up during the meeting.
Salem Health will continue looking for solutions. We will meet again in the next 2-3 months to follow up on how they are doing with these issues. We will discuss what has been successful and what areas still need improvement. OAD wants share with you that Salem Health does recognize and are aware of the concerns presented to them by the community. They thank you and encourage you to continue to share your commendation and concerns with Salem Health you may have as a patient regarding accommodation, services, and so forth.

GUTHRIE NUTTER: We'd like to ask those of you who are hearing: Do you have Deaf friends? Deaf family? People in your community who are Deaf? Deaf colleagues? Are you interested in learning more about how to better support, partner with, and engage with those Deaf individuals that you know?
If so, there is a great opportunity open to you. Deafhood Allies Workshop will offer a forum to have valuable in-depth group discussions to address this topic. Chad will give the details.
CHAD A. LUDWIG: The workshop will be held Wednesday, February 24, in the Oregon School for the Deaf gym in Salem. The event will be open to anyone who'd like to attend. The cost for OAD members is $10. For non-members, the cost is $25. For interpreters wanting CEUs, the cost is $45. Salem Ludwig
Salem Ludwig (July 31, 1915 – April 1, 2007) was an American character actor and acting instructor.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Ludwig was blacklisted in 1957 and could only find minimal stage work. He had many film and television credits and remained active, even after his 90th birthday, until his death at age 91. A biographical film, An Actor's Life was made by budding director/actress Carol Schaye, who wanted to portray actors as talented, working individuals rather than just the character they see. He was represented by Theatrical Agent Archer King.

Salem Hospital (Oregon)
Salem Hospital is a non-profit, regional medical center located in Salem, Oregon, United States. Founded in 1896, the hospital has 454 beds. Salem Hospital's emergency department is among the busiest in Oregon. A Level II trauma center, the community hospital is the largest employer in Salem and the only hospital in the city.
History
In 1896, Salem General Hospital was incorporated at the Glen Oak Orphanage. Situated on 10 acres (4.0 ha) of land donated to the orphanage by the Oregon Children's Aid Society, the hospital opened a school of nursing with the first class graduating in 1899. The original building for Salem General burned in 1920, with a new building completed the following year. Salem General expanded in 1926 and 1953.
In 1916, Frank B. Wedel and wife started the Deaconess Home and Hospital in a former hotel on Winter Street. Started with four nurses, the hospital grew and was expanded in 1920, becoming Deaconess Hospital. The hospital was expanded again in 1924 to 1925, with administration staying in the Wedel family until it was converted into a community hospital and renamed as Salem Memorial Hospital. In 1969, Salem Memorial Hospital and Salem General Hospital merged to create Salem Hospital.

Hello everybody! I’m Chad A. Ludwig, President of Oregon Association of the Deaf. I wanted to talk with you about Salem Health Hospital based in Salem. Salem Health has many offices throughout the Salem metro area.
On Friday, January 28th, Salem Health asked me to meet with them. I looked forward to the meeting. We started our relationship after we expressed our community's concern about their interpreting accommodations. The instances began about 2-3 years ago and we have kept in touch since that time. They asked if I would come meet with them.
During the meeting we focused on two issues: The first issue was providing interpreting services for nights and weekends. The second issue was regarding complaints that the hospital received about the gender of an interpreter. Currently, Salem Health employs a full time interpreter who happens to be a male. They do not have a full time female sign language interpreter.
Some female patients are concerned about having a male sign language interpreter. They would prefer a female interpreter, but this can cause several conflicts. Regarding the second issue of a male and female sign language interpreter; in our discussion we came up with some ideas on how Salem Health can improve this issue.
Returning to the first issue about covering interpreter services during nights and weekends; Salem Health is concerned that some patients have expressed their serious anger with Salem Health for not providing onsite sign language interpreters during evenings and weekends. We thoroughly discussed this issue and I was able to learn few things Salem Health has contracts with about 5 different ASL and foreign language interpreter agencies. Two are foreign language interpreter agencies and the other three are ASL-only interpreting agencies.
When the patients arrive at the hospital and requests an ASL interpreter they turn down the video remote interpreting station that is readily available. Salem Health contacts these five agencies requesting an on-site ASL interpreter. Salem Health faces this challenge; of the three ASL only interpreting agencies, two of them are only open from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. The third ASL only interpreting agency can do nights and weekends, but sometimes they are unable to find an interpreter to fill the job. The last two are foreign language interpreting agencies.
The challenge for these agencies is that their ASL interpreters lives far away and the interpreters are not willing to work during nights and weekends. This presents a challenge to Salem Health as they continue to struggle to recruit interpreters to work onsite during nights and weekends. Salem Health is in a position that they need to use a video remote interpreting station while they await confirmation that an onsite interpreter is on their way during night and weekend hours. We have discussed this challenge and shared some ideas and some potential solutions.
Salem Health appreciated our discussion and they will look at our suggestions. Salem Health expresses their gratitude and asked me to share this with you. Salem Health does not want to deny your request for an onsite ASL interpreter. They do want to offer you the service, however, they are stuck. Salem Health strives to work and improve communication accessibility for their patients. Their goal is to make sure their patients are satisfied with the communication services provided by Salem Health. Salem Health and OAD have discussed these issues and will work through information that brought up during the meeting.
Salem Health will continue looking for solutions. We will meet again in the next 2-3 months to follow up on how they are doing with these issues. We will discuss what has been successful and what areas still need improvement. Hello everybody! I’m Chad A. Ludwig, President of Oregon Association of the Deaf. I wanted to talk with you about Salem Health Hospital based in Salem. Salem Health has many offices throughout the Salem metro area.
On Friday, January 28th, Salem Health asked me to meet with them. I looked forward to the meeting. We started our relationship after we expressed our community's concern about their interpreting accommodations. The instances began about 2-3 years ago and we have kept in touch since that time. They asked if I would come meet with them.
During the meeting we focused on two issues: The first issue was providing interpreting services for nights and weekends. The second issue was regarding complaints that the hospital received about the gender of an interpreter. Currently, Salem Health employs a full time interpreter who happens to be a male. They do not have a full time female sign language interpreter.
Some female patients are concerned about having a male sign language interpreter. They would prefer a female interpreter, but this can cause several conflicts. Regarding the second issue of a male and female sign language interpreter; in our discussion we came up with some ideas on how Salem Health can improve this issue.
Returning to the first issue about covering interpreter services during nights and weekends; Salem Health is concerned that some patients have expressed their serious anger with Salem Health for not providing onsite sign language interpreters during evenings and weekends. We thoroughly discussed this issue and I was able to learn few things Salem Health has contracts with about 5 different ASL and foreign language interpreter agencies. Two are foreign language interpreter agencies and the other three are ASL-only interpreting agencies.
When the patients arrive at the hospital and requests an ASL interpreter they turn down the video remote interpreting station that is readily available. Salem Health contacts these five agencies requesting an on-site ASL interpreter. Salem Health faces this challenge; of the three ASL only interpreting agencies, two of them are only open from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. The third ASL only interpreting agency can do nights and weekends, but sometimes they are unable to find an interpreter to fill the job. The last two are foreign language interpreting agencies.
The challenge for these agencies is that their ASL interpreters lives far away and the interpreters are not willing to work during nights and weekends. This presents a challenge to Salem Health as they continue to struggle to recruit interpreters to work onsite during nights and weekends. Salem Health is in a position that they need to use a video remote interpreting station while they await confirmation that an onsite interpreter is on their way during night and weekend hours. We have discussed this challenge and shared some ideas and some potential solutions.
Salem Health appreciated our discussion and they will look at our suggestions. Salem Health expresses their gratitude and asked me to share this with you. Salem Health does not want to deny your request for an onsite ASL interpreter. They do want to offer you the service, however, they are stuck. Salem Health strives to work and improve communication accessibility for their patients. Their goal is to make sure their patients are satisfied with the communication services provided by Salem Health. Salem Health and OAD have discussed these issues and will work through information that brought up during the meeting.
Salem Health will continue looking for solutions. We will meet again in the next 2-3 months to follow up on how they are doing with these issues. We will discuss what has been successful and what areas still need improvement. "Zur Person" war eine deutsche Fernseh-Sendereihe, in der Günter Gaus Prominente, insbesondere Politiker, interviewte. 1963 wurde die erste Sendung ausgestrahlt. Ab 1965 wurde die Reihe unter der Bezeichnung "Zu Protokoll" im SWR, ab 1980 im WDR unter "Deutsche" weitergeführt. 1990 erhielt sie beim DFF wieder den Titel "Zur Person". Von 1992 bis 2003 wurde sie unter demselben Titel im ORB ausgestrahlt, der 2003 im RBB aufging. In 40 Jahren wurden über 200 Interviews geführt.
Günter Gaus zählte zu den bedeutendsten Journalisten der deutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte. Geboren 1929 in Braunschweig als Sohn eines Obsthändlers, wuchs er ebenda heran. Nach einem abgebrochenen Studium der Germanistik und Geschichte in München, widmete er sich für viele Jahre gänzlich der journalistischen Tätigkeit. Zunächst blieb diese ausschließlich auf das Zeitungswesen beschränkt, so arbeitete er als Redakteur u.a. für Spiegel und SZ, später gestaltete er die (anfangs) ZDF-Sendereihe "Zur Person" nach Angebot Hans Herbert Westermanns, des Hauptabteilungsleiters für Politik und Zeitgeschehen beim ZDF, der verschiedene von Gaus verfasste Portraits in der SZ gelesen hatte und so zur Idee einer eigenen Sendung gekommen war. Von 1974 bis 1981 war Gaus Ständiger Vertreter der Bundesrepublik Deutschland bei der DDR.
Gaus, der durch Erfahrungen des Zweiten Weltkriegs geprägt war, begegnete nach eigener Aussage jeglichen Ideologien mit Ablehnung, so auch dem Verhalten der US-amerikanischen Regierung und ihrer Verbündeten nach dem 11. September 2001. Nachdem Gerhard Schröder den Amerikanern die "uneingeschränkte Solidarität" Deutschlands zusicherte, trat Gaus aus der SPD aus. Er starb nach langer Krankheit im Jahre 2004 in Hamburg.

Dennoch bleibt Mauro Peter mit beiden Beinen fest auf dem Boden der Realität.

Hello everybody! I’m Chad A. Ludwig, President of Oregon Association of the Deaf. I wanted to talk with you about Salem Health Hospital based in Salem. Salem Health has many offices throughout the Salem metro area.
On Friday, January 28th, Salem Health asked me to meet with them. I looked forward to the meeting. We started our relationship after we expressed our community's concern about their interpreting accommodations. The instances began about 2-3 years ago and we have kept in touch since that time. They asked if I would come meet with them.
During the meeting we focused on two issues: The first issue was providing interpreting services for nights and weekends. The second issue was regarding complaints that the hospital received about the gender of an interpreter. Currently, Salem Health employs a full time interpreter who happens to be a male. They do not have a full time female sign language interpreter.
Some female patients are concerned about having a male sign language interpreter. They would prefer a female interpreter, but this can cause several conflicts. Regarding the second issue of a male and female sign language interpreter; in our discussion we came up with some ideas on how Salem Health can improve this issue.
Returning to the first issue about covering interpreter services during nights and weekends; Salem Health is concerned that some patients have expressed their serious anger with Salem Health for not providing onsite sign language interpreters during evenings and weekends. We thoroughly discussed this issue and I was able to learn few things Salem Health has contracts with about 5 different ASL and foreign language interpreter agencies. Two are foreign language interpreter agencies and the other three are ASL-only interpreting agencies.
When the patients arrive at the hospital and requests an ASL interpreter they turn down the video remote interpreting station that is readily available. Salem Health contacts these five agencies requesting an on-site ASL interpreter. Salem Health faces this challenge; of the three ASL only interpreting agencies, two of them are only open from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. The third ASL only interpreting agency can do nights and weekends, but sometimes they are unable to find an interpreter to fill the job. The last two are foreign language interpreting agencies.
The challenge for these agencies is that their ASL interpreters lives far away and the interpreters are not willing to work during nights and weekends. This presents a challenge to Salem Health as they continue to struggle to recruit interpreters to work onsite during nights and weekends. Salem Health is in a position that they need to use a video remote interpreting station while they await confirmation that an onsite interpreter is on their way during night and weekend hours. We have discussed this challenge and shared some ideas and some potential solutions.
Salem Health appreciated our discussion and they will look at our suggestions. Salem Health expresses their gratitude and asked me to share this with you. Salem Health does not want to deny your request for an onsite ASL interpreter. They do want to offer you the service, however, they are stuck. Salem Health strives to work and improve communication accessibility for their patients. Their goal is to make sure their patients are satisfied with the communication services provided by Salem Health. Salem Health and OAD have discussed these issues and will work through information that brought up during the meeting.
Salem Health will continue looking for solutions. We will meet again in the next 2-3 months to follow up on how they are doing with these issues. We will discuss what has been successful and what areas still need improvement. OAD wants share with you that Salem Health does recognize and are aware of the concerns presented to them by the community. GUTHRIE NUTTER: We'd like to ask those of you who are hearing: Do you have Deaf friends? Deaf family? People in your community who are Deaf? Deaf colleagues? Are you interested in learning more about how to better support, partner with, and engage with those Deaf individuals that you know?
If so, there is a great opportunity open to you. Deafhood Allies Workshop will offer a forum to have valuable in-depth group discussions to address this topic. Chad will give the details.
CHAD A. LUDWIG: The workshop will be held Wednesday, February 24, in the Oregon School for the Deaf gym in Salem. The event will be open to anyone who'd like to attend. Clinicians increasingly challenge the pathologist to reasonably stratify each particular patient according to the patient's individual cancer biology. Surgical pathology is still largely conducted manually while the complexity in clinical diagnostics grows almost exponentially. Clinicians increasingly challenge the pathologist to reasonably stratify each particular patient according to the patient's individual cancer biology. Although new molecular technologies provide additional data based on the tumor's genotype and other -omics tools, only the sustained integrity of the tumor and the surrounding tissue provides pivotal information on the tumor heterogeneity and the potential co-localization of highly proliferative areas and areas with chemo-sensitivity or resistance, which might have a significant influence on the treatment response and disease outcome. The quantitative, simultaneous and unbiased analysis of all extractable (biomarker) data from a single tumor by Digital Pathology is an essential requirement for effective clinical decision support that can be provided as the highest possible medical value of the diagnostic community for the benefit of the patients' health.
Prof Dr Ralf Huss accepted the role as Chief Medical Officer of Definiens AG in 2013. He brings more than 20 years of medical expertise and significant knowledge in histopathology and cancer research into Definiens' Tissue Diagnostics and Clinical Digital Pathology. Prior to assuming the role as CMO at Definiens, Prof. Huss also served as Global Head of Histopathology and Tissue Biomarker at Roche Diagnostics, where he was involved in identifying new tissue biomarkers to stratify cancer patients as part of a global Personalized Healthcare strategy. He also served in various post-doctoral and faculty positions in Switzerland, USA and Germany and he was an advisor to various small and mid-size life science companies and foundations. He also founded biotech start-ups in the area of advanced therapeutics. Prof. Huss holds a Doctoral Degree in Medicine from the Friedrich-Alexander-University in Erlangen and is an associated Professor of Pathology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and an adjunct Professor of Regenerative Medicine at the Wake-Forest-Institute in Winston-Salem.
