The Phoenician alphabet, called by convention the Proto-Canaanite alphabet for inscriptions older than around 1050 BC, is the oldest verified alphabet. The Phoenician alphabet contains 22 letters, all of which are consonants, and is described as an abjad, with matres lectionis being used for some vowels in certain late varieties. It was used for the writing of Phoenician, a Northern Semitic language, used by the civilization of Phoenicia.
The Phoenician alphabet is derived from Egyptian hieroglyphs and became one of the most widely used writing systems, spread by Phoenician merchants across the Mediterranean world, where it evolved and was assimilated by many other cultures. The Paleo-Hebrew alphabet was directly derived from Phoenician. Another derivative script is the Aramaic alphabet, which was the ancestor of the modern Arabic script. The Modern Hebrew script is a stylistic variant of the Aramaic script. The Greek alphabet (and by extension its descendants such as the Latin, the Cyrillic, and the Coptic) was also derived from Phoenician.
Many significant locations, cultures/groups, and objects throughout history have been lost, inspiring archaeologists and treasure-hunters around the world to search for them. The existence of some of these places or items, particularly those from ancient history, is legendary and remains in doubt. Excluded from these lists are lost works—literary, historical, or mythological writings which have no current complete copies but are referenced by their contemporaries.
A basic outline of the origins of the Alphabet. Made for a school project.
http://thejunglesurfer.blogspot.com.au/ VERY ANCIENT However, according to a theory by Theodor Nöldeke from 1904, some of the letter names were changed in Phoenician from the Proto-Canaanite script.[dubious -- discuss] This includes: gaml "throwing stick" to gimel "camel" digg "fish" to dalet "door" hll "jubilation" to he "window" ziqq "manacle" to zayin "weapon" naḥš "snake" to nun "fish" piʾt "corner" to pey "mouth" šimš "sun" to šin "tooth"
Animation Documentary for the "Beyrouth Capitale du Livre". A flashback in time that describes the origins of the Alphabet we currently use. It was a fun project, and interesting as we did the historic research as well. Amandine Brenas, head of the project, was backed up by Marilyn Farah (me) and Yelosudio. We separated the animation work between us. We had illustrators, Ghadi Ghosn and Ralph Doumit, to help up with all the artwork, and Jade Souaid (a.k.a. Dj JADE) and Kevork Keshishian for the music and sound design. Check out more fun videos at: https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperLoun/videos Please like and suscribe! thanks for the support :)

From Egyptian hieroglyphs to your alphabet, watch these miners turn fancy symbols into simple scratches that were all about the sounds. First marvel at hieroglyphic inscriptions in the shadow of the great pyramids. Once you grasp how those work (or dismiss their archaic complexities), travel to a cave in the Sinai desert. See those old ornate consonants and determinatives turn into a rushed, simplified alphabet before your very eyes! But this isn't where the story of writing ends. A Phoenician merchant asks you to pack up the alphabet and help her trade it around the ancient Mediterranean. See the results of that next time! Brush up on logographs, rebus writing and determinatives in episodes 3, 4 and 5 of Thoth's Pill: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLc4s09N3L2h3HtaAYVqOVKGt2h6wR...
