"Nearer, My God, to Thee" is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: "So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it..."
The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank.
The lyrics to the hymn are as follows:
A sixth verse was later added to the hymn by Edward Henry Bickersteth Jr. as follows:
The verse was written by the English poet and Unitarian hymn writer Sarah Flower Adams (1805–48) at her home in Sunnybank, Loughton, Essex, England, in 1841. It was first set to music by Adams's sister, the composer Eliza Flower, for William Johnson Fox's collection Hymns and Anthems.

Richard J. Jose (June 5, 1862 in Lanner, Cornwall – October 20, 1941) was an American countertenor.
Richard Jose immigrated to Nevada after his uncle. He sang in saloons for charity, and in 1881 with Thatcher's Minstrels. In 1884, he joined a minstrel troupe in California, and later appeared in New York City. In 1896, Jose married Therese Shreve.
In 1887, he won a gold medal from the Academy of Music (New York City). He made phonograph cylinders as early as 1892. Between October 27, 1903 and 1906, he recorded for the Victor Talking Machine Company, and his version of "Silver Threads Among the Gold" was a hit. In 1905 and 1906, he toured with his own minstrel show, and in 1906, was injured when a stage curtain fell on him.
In 1915, Jose sang the song "Silver Threads Among the Gold" in a silent short movie of the same name, by Pierce Kingsley and R. R. Roberts. After retiring from entertainment, Jose became the California Deputy Real Estate Commissioner.
Jose, pronounced /z/ like "rose," is a Cornish name. He added an accent, eɪ as in José.
Juan Fernando Ortega (born March 2, 1957) is a singer-songwriter in contemporary Christian music. He is noted both for his interpretations of many traditional hymns and songs, such as "Give Me Jesus" and "Be Thou My Vision", and for writing clear, easily understood songs, such as "This Good Day".
Ortega was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico near the banks of the Rio Grande. He started learning piano at eight years of age. Through his father's work with the United States Department of State, he also spent time in Ecuador and Barbados. His family lived in Chimayo, NM for eight generations, which has been cited as an influence on his music. It is from his heritage and classical training at The University of New Mexico where Ortega derives his sound, embracing country, classical, Celtic, Latin American, world, modern folk and rustic hymnody.
Wallace Henry Hartley (2 June 1878 – 15 April 1912) was an English violinist and bandleader on the RMS Titanic on its maiden voyage. He became famous for leading the eight member band as the ship sank on 15 April 1912. He died in the sinking.
Wallace Hartley was born and raised in Colne, Lancashire, England. Hartley's father, Albion Hartley, was the choirmaster and Sunday school superintendent at Bethel Independent Methodist Chapel, on Burnley Road where the family attended worship services. Hartley himself introduced the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee" to the congregation. Wallace studied at Colne's Methodist day school, sang in Bethel's choir and learned violin from a fellow congregation member.
After leaving school, Hartley started work with the Craven & Union Bank in Colne. When his family moved to Huddersfield, Hartley joined the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1903, he left home to join the municipal orchestra in Bridlington, where he stayed for six years. He later moved to Dewsbury, West Yorkshire and in 1909, he joined the Cunard Line as a musician, serving on the ocean liners RMS Lucania, RMS Lusitania and RMS Mauretania.

On April 15, 2016, The Duttons were privileged to perform "Nearer, My God, to Thee” in the exhibit room with Wallace Hartley’s magnificent violin display in commemoration of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic on April 15, 1912. Wallace H. Hartley, at 33 years old, perished in the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic on April 15, 1912. Though the final song played by the band is unknown, legend has it to be "Nearer, My God, to Thee.” It was one of Wallace’s favorite hymns. Wallace Hartley’s body was pulled from the sea ten days after the sinking. The prized violin his fiancée had given him was protectively encased in his leather satchel and strapped to his chest. The Duttons & Branson Titanic Museum Attraction team up to commemorate Wallace Hartley's bitter-sweet story of dedication, love, and ...
Please enjoy this full version. This is the song the band played before the Titanic sank. "Sometime around 2.10 a.m. as the Titanic began settling more quickly into the icy North Altantic, the sounds of ragtime, familiar dance tunes and popular waltzes that had floated reassuringly across her decks suddenly stopped as Bandmaster Wallace Hartley tapped his bow against his violin. Hartley and his musicians, all wearing their lifebelts now, were standing back at the base of the second funnel, on the roof of the First Class Lounge, where they had been playing for the better part of an hour. There were a few moments of silence, then the solemn strains of the hymn "Nearer My God to Thee" began drifting across the water. It was with a perhaps unintended irony that Hartley chose a hymn that ...

One of my favorite church hymns. :) It was also played in the movie "Titanic" by a string quartet (I think) when the ship was about to sink. :)

In 2003-2005, I downloaded over 3500 MIDI scans of piano rolls from various sites. Nearly 100 of them were listed as "unknown". I have identified some of the tunes, but am left with 84 rolls whose titles I don't know. Perhaps some of these were identified by others in the mean time, but at least some of the roll scan sites no longer exist as the roll collectors/scanners have passed away. I did this as a live stream simply because I don't have the disk space to do a long recording. Now that the stream has ended and processed as a standalone video, please provide a time stamp of any tunes you recognize. They will be listed below. Some are medley rolls, and it's possible some tunes in the medleys are obvious, like one that starts with Turkey in the Straw. But there will be other tunes in the...

Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to thee.
E'en though it be a cross,
That raiseth me
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to thee.
Though like the wanderer,
The sun gone down
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone,
Yet in my dreams I'd be,
Nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to thee.
There let the way appear,
Steps unto heaven
All that Thou sendest me,
In mercy given
Angels to beckon me,
Nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to thee.
Then with my waking thoughts
Bright with Thy praise
Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I'll raise
So by my woes to be,
Nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to thee.
Or if on joyful wing,
Cleaving the sky
Sun, moon, and stars forgot,
Upward I fly
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to thee!
