Anand and Milind are an Indian music directors duo consisting of Anand Shrivastav and his younger brother Milind. They have composed music for over 200 Bollywood films and are the sons of 60s music director, Chitragupta.

Career

Anand–Milind debuted in Ab Aayega Mazaa (1984) and rose to fame after the success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). The film's successful songs include "Papa Kehte Hain","Ghazab Ka Hai Din", and "Akele Hai To Kya Gham Hai". The music for "Akele Hain To Kya Gum Hai" is an exact reproduction of the instrumental number Return to the Alamo by the band The Shadows. The same year also saw the moderate success of the horror flick Woh phir Aayegi.

Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka stormed the music stands in 1989 and the music of this telefilm proved to be a classic, staying popular even today. The film also strengthened their work-relationship with music baron Gulshan Kumar of T-Series. The duo then composed the songs for Salman Khan's film, Baaghi: A Rebel for Love. Baaghi was followed by a series of box office hits like Dil, Beta (1992). Love (1991), starring Salman Khan and Revathy, boasted of chartbusting-music, popular even today, despite the film's failure at the box office. It also marked the debut of the southern nightingale Chitra, into Bollywood and Hindi films. In 1994 they also composed, now famous music for Rahul Rawail's Anjaam which starred Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh Khan. Suhaag (1994), starring Ajay Devgun, Akshay Kumar, Karishma Kapoor and Naghma, is another film that sold huge units that year. One of their best albums in 1994 was the highly ignored Vikram Bhatt directed romantic film Madhosh, which launched Aamir Khan's brother Faisal Khan.

Alka Yagnik (Hindi: अलका याज्ञनिक, Bengali: অলকা ইয়াগনিক) is an Indian playback singer. She is noted in Hindi cinema with a career spanning over three decades. She is a record seven-time winner from a record of 36 nominations of the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, a two-time recipient of the National Film Award as well as several other music awards & honours. Further, as many as 20 of her tracks feature in BBC's "Top 40 Bollywood Soundtracks of all time" review.

Early life and background

Alka Yagnik was born in Kolkata on 20 March 1966, to Gujarati Hindu Parents. Her mother Shubha Yagnik was a singer of Indian classical music. She did her schooling from Modern High School for Girls. In 1972 at the age of six, she started singing for Akashvani (All India Radio), Calcutta. At age 10, her mother brought her to Mumbai as a child singer. She was advised to wait until her voice matured, but her mother remained determined. On a subsequent visit, Alka got a letter of introduction to Raj Kapoor from his Kolkata distributor. Kapoor heard the girl and sent her with a letter to noted music director Laxmikant. Impressed, Laxmikant gave her two alternatives – an immediate start as a dubbing artist or a later break as a singer; Shubha chose the latter for her daughter.

Menander I

Menander I Soter (Ancient Greek: Μένανδρος Α΄ ὁ Σωτήρ, Ménandros A' ho Sōtḗr, "Menander I the Saviour"; known in Indian Pali sources as Milinda) was an Indo-Greek King of the Indo-Greek Kingdom (165//155 –130 BC) who established a large empire in North India and became a patron of Buddhism.

Menander was initially a king of Bactria. After conquering the Punjab he established an empire in the Indian subcontinent stretching from the Kabul River valley in the west to the Ravi River in the east, and from the Swat River valley in the north to Arachosia (the Helmand Province). Ancient Indian writers indicate that he launched expeditions southward into Rajasthan and as far east down the Ganges River Valley as Pataliputra (Patna), and the Greek geographer Strabo wrote that he "conquered more tribes than Alexander the Great."

Large numbers of Menander’s coins have been unearthed, attesting to both the flourishing commerce and duration of his realm. Menander was also a patron of Buddhism, and his conversations with the Buddhist sage Nagasena are recorded in the important Buddhist work, the Milinda Panha (“The Questions of Milinda”). After his death in 130 BC, he was succeeded by his wife Agathokleia who ruled as regent for his son Strato I. Buddhist tradition relates that he handed over his kingdom to his son and retired from the world, but Plutarch relates that he died in camp while on a military campaign, and that his remains were divided equally between the cities to be enshrined in monuments, probably stupas, across his realm.
