Rwanda (/ruːˈɑːndə/ or /ruːˈændə/ ( listen); Kinyarwanda: U Rwanda [u.ɾɡwanda]), officially the Republic of Rwanda (Kinyarwanda: Repubulika y'u Rwanda; French: République du Rwanda), is a sovereign state in central and east Africa and one of the smallest countries on the African mainland. Located a few degrees south of the Equator, Rwanda is bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwanda is in the African Great Lakes region and is highly elevated; its geography dominated by mountains in the west and savanna to the east, with numerous lakes throughout the country. The climate is temperate to subtropical, with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons each year.

The United Nations was harshly criticized for its handling of the situation in Rwanda. Questions are now being raised over whether the UN has changed enough to prevent similar atrocities from happening again. President Paul Kagame has commended Rwanda National Police’s performance in its last 17 years of existence, and challenged the force to perform to the best of its ability and ensure that the trust and confidence Rwandans have in them is sustained. He made the remarks while presiding over the ‘Police Day’ to mark the 17th anniversary of RNP, held at Kigali Regional Stadium. On the same day, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Johnston Busingye commissioned 363 Officer Cadets including 33 females of the ninth intake, who completed a 10-month Cadet Course, and conferred upon the rank of Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP). Rwanda now finds itself at a crossroads. That time has come to choose. Will we have a hand in charting our future, as Rwandans? Or will have a hand in sitting back while someone else decides this for us? Well, no matter where the tides fall and winds blow, the choice is ours and in the end, we must lie in the bed we make. This is no time for you or I, it is time for ‘We’. So, my conclusion is this: that Rwanda’s future will only be as good as its choice. ~NM
The Republic of Rwanda, though relatively small in size, is a highly populated country of 11 million people in the east-central region of Africa. Today, one of the most important challenges facing Rwanda is forest conservation. After more than a decade of mass deforestation, Rwanda's native forests were reduced to a mere 5 percent of the nation's territory by 2005. The Gishwati Forest alone, once a 250,000 acre forest in the western part of Rwanda, shrank to only 1,500 acres by 2001. Because 91 percent of Rwandans make their living as subsistence farmers, Rwanda's deforestation is largely attributed to the land clearing caused by the nation's agriculture-based economy. Chimpanzees along with many other species experienced severe habitat fragmentation. Biodiversity in the Gishwati Forest, t...

If you are ever in Kigali, please make it a point to go visit the memorial, it's something you will not regret. The museum also survives on donations so if you're able to dona...

The Virunga massif, a volcanic formation, spans three countries (Rwanda, Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo) and is home to all the world’s wild mountain gorillas. Gorillas are Rwanda’s national treasure, and every September there is a high-profile ceremony to name all the baby gorillas born in the previous 12 months, attended by the nation’s president and various dignitaries. This “gorilla” amphitheater has been assembled in the shadow of the Parc National des Volcans in preparation for the ceremony.

This year is an important milestone in Rwanda's history. The twentieth commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi has seen Rwandans and friends from around the world come together to remember, unite and renew. Telling the world about the causes, reality and consequences of the genocide was at the core of Kwibuka20. The genocide was stopped by the Rwandan Patriotic Front, and on 4 July 2014, Rwanda will mark twenty years since liberation (Kwibohora20), honour those who fought in struggle for freedom and dignity in Rwanda and look to the future with hope, optimism and a renewed commitment to Agaciro (dignity), self reliance and shared human values. In the aftermath of the genocide, Rwandans made three important choices -- to stay together, to be accountable and to think big. These deci...

As survivors of the genocide recounted their memories of the killings and of survival, several people were overcome with grief, screaming and crying uncontrollably with medical staff helping to carry them out and to provide counseling. Official mourning, which began three months ago with a flame of remembrance touring towns and villages across the nation, culminated Monday with the arrival of the torch at the national genocide memorial.
On December 6th 2016, the World Affairs Council-Washington, D.C. (WAC-DC) hosted Her Excellency Mathilde Mukantabana, Ambassador of Rwanda to the United States. Ambassador Mukantabana delivered remarks to a capacity crowd at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC. The Ambassador began by addressing the 1994 genocide and the impact it has had both in Rwanda and on the minds of people living outside of the nation. According to the Ambassador, her past as both a student of history and later a tenured Professor of History at Consumnes River College in Sacramento, California helped in understanding what happened during that time. This understanding was very important, the Ambassador stressed, in creating the unity the country has sought since that terrib...
Rwanda has made enormous progress rebuilding after years of devastating violence that culminated in the 1994 genocide, however many challenges remain for this small, landlocked and densely populated nation. On the democracy front, Rwanda has held multiple national and local elections since 1994, but many believe that there is more that can be done by the Government of Rwanda to promote a truly pluralist democracy. According to the World Bank Rwanda saw an increase of 75 per cent in tourist arrivals between 2010 and 2015. Cardinal to this binge is the MICE Strategy which the East African nation has embraced whole heatedly. Globally the MICE market, includes around 400,000 conferences and exhibitions, is estimated at a size of US$280-$300 billion and many nations’ tourism economy thrives on this sector. With World Travel Trends Reports showing the MICE contribution to the total travel market being around 54 per cent, it’s no surprise that Rwanda chose to position herself as the penultimate MICE Hub on the continent. But the sector has challenges like any other.
Let the Devil Sleep is the story of four individual's unlikely journey of confession, forgiveness and reconciliation in post-genocide Rwanda. The Rwanda genocide of 1994 saw people murdered at a scale and at a speed not seen since World War II. Approximately one million people were killed, primarily from the minority Tutsi ethnic group. The damage inflicted by the genocide went beyond the loss of life. It left the country violently divided and highly traumatised. Towns and villages were split between those who took part in the genocide and those who lost family members. Such was the brutality of those 100 days that long after the killing had ended, the question remained: how could the people of Rwanda ever be reconciled? The film tells the story of how Trócaire's partner the Commission...
