Kenya (/ˈkɛnjə/; locally [ˈkɛɲa]), officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country in Africa and a founding member of the East African Community (EAC). Its capital and largest city is Nairobi. Kenya's territory lies on the equator and overlies the East African Rift covering a diverse and expansive terrain that extends roughly from Lake Victoria to Lake Turkana (formerly called Lake Rudolf) and further south-east to the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya covers 581,309 km2 (224,445 sq mi), and had a population of approximately 45 million people in July 2014.
Kenya has a warm and humid tropical climate on its Indian Ocean coastline. The climate is cooler in the savannah grasslands around the capital city, Nairobi, and especially closer to Mount Kenya, which has snow permanently on its peaks. Further inland, in the Nyanza region, there is a hot and dry climate which becomes humid around Lake Victoria, the largest tropical fresh-water lake in the world. This gives way to temperate and forested hilly areas in the neighboring western region. The north-eastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Kenya is known for its safaris, diverse climate and geography, and expansive wildlife reserves and national parks such as the East and West Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park. Kenya has several world heritage sites such as Lamu and numerous beaches, including in Diani, Bamburi and Kilifi, where international yachting competitions are held every year.

Plot: This film, The Jose Lucas Story, is said to be based on a fictionalized account of a particular string of criminal exploits, leading to the arrest, conviction, incarceration, and too sudden death of one, Jose Lucas, a local Brooklyn kid whose early life reads like a Dicken's novel, and ends like a classic Shakespearean tragedy. He's convicted and given a 23-year prison sentence for having been a perpetrator in a notorious day-time jewelry heist in toney, downtown Georgetown, Washington, DC.(2005) Lucas had managed to be caught on a security camera with his homeboy Lex (the one who actually used the gun, shot the shop's jeweler, and managed also, to be un-masked on camera) by design of the other two culprits, Robert and 'E," who when arrested later, in another robbery, make a deal with the DA to escape the heavy sentences given Jose and Lex (who got 24 years as the shooter) by giving them up. The film attempts to get at the story behind that conviction, which many believed resulted in a grossly unfair sentence. After having accepted that Jose has lost in court, they had hoped to fight the verdict; Jose's defense did file and lose several appeals. They had settled into the reality that most residents-of- color in Brooklyn find themselves: that of having a loved one incarcerated.

Politics olympic games 2017 are officially on. Among the medal events is street swimming and gymnastics by men , song and dance , soccer and a new game they now call foot in mouth. To take part, a dose of something intoxicating that could be drink, smoke or just undying love for your leader, sorry, politician, is recommended. These games surprisingly are infectious and as Emmanuel Juma reports on Bullseye siasa edition, the ordinary folk are learning fast. Watch more NTV Kenya videos at ntv.co.ke and nation.co.ke. The World Bank has highlighted that Kenya's economic growth has been robust in the face of a global economic slowdown and low commodity prices. This has been supported by the non-dependence on oil exports; and price stability in its top exports, effectively shielding it from plunging commodity prices.

Kenya’s economy made significant strides jumping up 21 places to be ranked 92 out of 190 countries surveyed in the 2016 World bank ease of doing business report. Based on the progress, Kenya was rated the third most improved economy, a sign that a raft of business reforms initiated by the government may be paying off. The World Bank has further projected Kenya's economy to grow by 5.9 percent in 2016 The International Monetary Fund – IMF has however revised its growth projection for Kenya's economy to 6.8 per cent, down from the initial figure of 7.2 per cent, owing to the prevailing harsh economic conditions. As Zawadi Mudibo reports, more questions than answers abound on whether or not the said economic growth has had a positive impact on the incomes of Kenyan households and the small an...
Through the introduction of community currencies like Lindi Pesa, the business community in Nairobi's poor neighborhoods are redesigning money to make it flow around the local economy more effectively. The brilliance of such currencies lies in the way they enable financial inclusion; how they bring very small businesses into the main economic system which they would otherwise not engage in.
South Africa became part of the BRICS group back in twenty ten and its clear to see why. From two thousand and two through to two thousand and eight, the country experienced annual growth averaging a tad under five percent per year and at times during that period it had teased the eight percent level giving a glimpse of the possibilities ahead. With vast natural resources such as gold, diamonds and platinum, excellent infrastructure and easy access to finance for business it had all the right ingredients in place for this trend to continue. The global recession hit hard however and, after a sharp contraction in the economy of six percent, it never really found its feet again. An increasingly corrupt government and high crime rates haven’t helped win foreign investment back into the region...

The newly produced series ‘Aid or Trade?’ shows that aid is no longer about transferring money or shipping goods. It’s rather about setting up sustainable companies, while taking local constraints and the environment into account. An article in the Economist recently stated 'Western governments should open up to trade rather than just dish out aid … Autocracy, corruption and strife will not disappear overnight. But at a dark time for the world economy, Africa’s progress is a reminder of the transformative promise of growth.' This 5 episode-series 'Aid or Trade?' A short film depicting a Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies stove project in Kisumu, Kenya. Though stove projects are quite common this one differs in combining a number of aspects, the stove is both energy efficient, has a chimney leading out harmful smoke and can be locally manufactured. It may thus hit three targets; 1), halving fuel consumption hampers deforestation which is a major problem in the area; 2), respiratory disease is a severe health issue in Kenya (and world wide), the chimney reduces in-door pollution to a minimum; and 3), by utilizing the local community, from entrepreneurs to craftsmen, in the entire process the production and spreading of the stove generates business boosting local economy.

Because of the equatorial climate, agriculture is the most important economic activity in Kenya. The most popular exports are tea, coffee and flowers. This movie is the fourth out of nine which were produced in 2014 in Kenya. A video I made of my trip to Kenya in 2003. I volunteered with the Earthwatch Institute at Sweetwaters Black Rhino Reserve. Music is by Hans Zimmer, from the soundtrack to The Lion King. Why did I use this music? Because the music recorded live from the event didn't come out well - I was too far away.
The documentary is a visual representation of the dynamic musical traditions of Kenya's coastal communities. Through a mosaic of historica; information and cultural practices, the docu provides a compelling backdrop to the musical diversity featured on the CD

Health care in Kenya is expensive. And so is corruption that diverts millions of dollars meant for buying medicine and paying doctors. When Cynthia loses a patient during one of the worst doctor's strike in Kenya in early 2017, she vows to relentlessly champion for the universalization of health care, especially for the most vulnerable rural populations with whom she spends more than 90% of her doctor time. Cynthia is a young government doctor working in remote parts of Kenya to serve the poor, who often do not have access to medical services and personnel. She has keen interests in global and public health, and women rights, and is a fervent activist having led a successful Twitter story campaign to support doctors’ bid to take universal healthcare to all Kenyans via the implementation ...

For the first time members of Kenya’s counter-terrorism police admit to “eliminating” suspected Muslim radicals. But just how did this multi-agency security force achieve this noble goal? Willis Raburu reports

Originally published on September 25, 2013 In the aftermath of the Kenya Westgate mall attack, the detailed planning of the terrorists conducting the siege has become clear. The group had poured over blueprints of the mall months in advance, identifying all available doors to lock, possible vantage points and even the air duct system of the popular mall. Before Saturday's four day siege began, the group of militants had visited the mall on at least one other occasion to stow away supplies of weapons and ammunition. Explosive devices were also planted by the terrorists around the mall in the days before the siege began. Kenyan military sources said the Somalia-based al-Shabaab terrorist network had recruited English-speaking jihadists from abroad for the Westgate attack. The officia...

In this film Wild Frontiers, Jonny Bealby, explains about tourism in Kenya. Here is the text... Jonny here, right now I am at Borana Ranch, high on the Laikipia Plateau, in the lee of Mount Kenya. And in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kenya. If I asked what's the first thing you think about when turning your mind to travel in this colourful East African country, you'd almost certainly say wildlife. And of course you'd be right as over 80 percent of holidays here will have a wildlife element. From the Marsabit National Park in the north, to the Masai Mara and Amboseli National Parks in the south, the planes of Kenya are teeming with wildlife or all shapes and sizes offering, along with its neighbour Tanzania, the best place in the world to view game. Kenya, with its numerous natural wonders gives a tourist the joy of a seaside holiday and the thrills of a safari. One can sit in the shade of a palm tree and swim in the emerald green water of the Indian Ocean, which runs out to the white, sandy beaches. We can take a look at Mombasa, most important port of Eastern Africa, the city of the Tusk Gate and the Jesus Fort. How about a typical African safari to Tsavo? Naturally, in the meantime we can meet elephants, lions, giraffes and dolphins. We can marvel at the 13th century city of Gedi. We can take a boat trip among the coral reefs of the sea national parks, or be amazed by the war dance of the Masai people, and can have a dinner at a coral cave.

I had one major goal before embarking on this journey: to capture the quintessential African, sun filling frame, Lion King-esque sunset. I will never forget that third evening in Masaai Mara, Mike Gaudaur speeding along the dirt trails in the luxurious yet rugged Prado chasing the sunset as we climbed to a hilltop. At 400mm, with a bean bag stabilizing the largest lens I've ever strapped to my camera, my heart raced and my hands shook in pure excitement. It was perfection. I was fortunate to be travelling with friend and classmate, Elise Watson, who had a healthy appetite for exploration and travel. I was also fo...

This is a journey into Kenya’s origins and its uncertain future. We travel along the colony’s iron foundations, the railway lines laid by the British imperialists as they raced to create a passage to Lake Victoria from Mombasa. 120 years later, the same railway is enjoyed by tourists seeking a taste of the vintage African safari, with luxury 1st-class carriages and pressed napkins. To either side of their trammelled way lie the gleaming metropolis of Nairobi, the rolling ranchers’ pastures and the sprawling slums of Kibera. Shot on SD and 8mm film, this film takes the viewer on an experiential journey through different periods of history and levels of society: we are welcomed by a demented Mau Mau veteran, carefully set on our way by a railway tourist guide, and bade farewell in true Momb...

He even studied in Ireland, where he earned a degree at St. Patrick College and advised missionaries preparing for Africa. What does Hoti particularly look forward to sharing with his travelers?
