A rough model of a planned body of work, currently titled Risk, that uses two moments of crisis for Citigroup - the engineering crisis at Citicorp Center in 1979 and the financial crisis of 2007 - as a platform for exploring the public and private representations of a company’s business and practices, the pervasive fallacy of perpetually positive financial returns, and the scale of influence that banks’ behaviors and philosophies occupy in our individual and collective lives using the images of two of the banks iconic buildings as a vehicle. It will consist of several sculptures and videos that highlight different aspects of these themes. One sculpture transforms the facade of 1 Court Square into an ever-growing, unending building displayed across four concurrent video monitors and supported by a steel lattice structure that invokes the buildings structural skeleton and holds the monitors over the viewer at 5º; another transforms the support structure of Citicorp Center into a swaying kinetic form. A two channel video narrates the crises in parallel, compressing them into a single space, while each features a street-level image of 1 Court Square and Citicorp Center buildings which are manipulated by an outsized hand.

A rough model of a planned body of work, currently titled Risk, that uses two moments of crisis for Citigroup - the engineering crisis at Citicorp Center in 197...A rough model of a planned body of work, currently titled Risk, that uses two moments of crisis for Citigroup - the engineering crisis at Citicorp Center in 1979 and the financial crisis of 2007 - as a platform for exploring the public and private representations of a company’s business and practices, the pervasive fallacy of perpetually positive financial returns, and the scale of influence that banks’ behaviors and philosophies occupy in our individual and collective lives using the images of two of the banks iconic buildings as a vehicle. It will consist of several sculptures and videos that highlight different aspects of these themes. One sculpture transforms the facade of 1 Court Square into an ever-growing, unending building displayed across four concurrent video monitors and supported by a steel lattice structure that invokes the buildings structural skeleton and holds the monitors over the viewer at 5º; another transforms the support structure of Citicorp Center into a swaying kinetic form. A two channel video narrates the crises in parallel, compressing them into a single space, while each features a street-level image of 1 Court Square and Citicorp Center buildings which are manipulated by an outsized hand.https://wn.com/Risk_Installation_Model

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A piece of cake. O'BRIEN (voice over): I'm flying in formation over New York with air show pilot John Klatt, a man who cheats death for a living. Or so it may seem. JOHN KLATT, AEROBATIC PILOT: We build trust, we work, we practice. What looks like is reckless and unpracticed is practiced every day. O'BRIEN: In the past month, Klatt and the rest of the air show community got a couple of tragic reminders of how narrow their margin for error really is. A Blue Angels pilot dead after a crash in South Carolina. And a Canadian Snowbirds performer killed a few weeks later practicing in Montana. SEAN TUCKER, AEROBATIC PILOT: This is not basket weaving 101. We can't afford to have a bad day. This is serious business. O'BRIEN: Sean Tucker has been performing at air shows for 30 years. The closest call he had came in practice last year when his controls broke. TUCKER: I was able to get it up to a safe altitude, get it away from -- and put anybody in danger. And I had to leave my baby, which is an airplane I love very, very much. O'BRIEN: Sean lived to smile and tell the tale, thanks to the parachute every aerobatic pilot... (on camera): There we go. (voice over): ... and passenger must wear -- snuggly, as I discovered. But what about the safety of the millions of spectators? We've all seen the horrifying images. Five years ago in Ukraine, a Russian fighter cartwheeled into a crowd, killing more than 80. And in Germany in 1988, a midair collision by the Italian air force demonstration team killed more than 70 spectators. JOHN CUDAHY, INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF AIR SHOWS: The regulations and the safety program that we have here in the United States is by far the most aggressive in the whole world. O'BRIEN: John Cudahy heads the International Council of Air Shows. He says in the U.S., the planes and the crowd are kept much farther apart. CUDAHY: We also make sure that when the pilots are flying aerobatic maneuvers, they're not directed at the crowd. O'BRIEN (on camera): As a matter of fact, air shows in North America have an amazing safety record. The last time a spectator was killed as a result of an air show crash in the U.S. or Canada was 1952. (2010), they think of the systemic risk of a financial institution as its contribution to the total capital shortfall of the financial system that can be ex- pected in a future crisis. They propose a systemic risk measure (SRISK) that captures the expected capital shortage of a firm given its degree of leverage and Marginal Expected Shortfall (MES). MES is the expected loss an equity investor in a financial firm would experience if the overall market declined substantially. To construct MES predictions, they introduce a dynamic model for the market and firm returns. This bivariate process is characterized by time varying volatility and correlation, which in turn are estimated by the familiar TARCH and DCC. The innovation distribution of the system is left unspeci- fied and we rely on flexible methods for inference, allowing for potential tail dependence in the shocks. The model is extrapolated to estimate the equity losses of a firm in a future crisis and consequently the capital shortage that would be experienced depending on the initial leverage. The empirical application on a set of top US financial firms finds that the methodology provides useful rankings of systemically risky firms at various stages of the financial crisis. One year and a half before the Lehman bankruptcy, eight companies out of the SRISK top ten turned out to be troubled institutions. The officer requested support, and Deputy Timothy Scott joined the pursuit. Eventually, Scott requested and received permission to use a Precision Intervention Technique ("PIT") maneuver, which would cause Harris's vehicle to spin to a stop. Scott accelerated and tapped the rear bumper of Harris's car, causing him to lose control and crash. Harris filed a civil rights action in federal court, alleging that Scott had violated the Fourth Amendment by using excessive force. Scott responded by filing a motion for summary judgment, asserting qualified immunity. The district court denied the motion for summary judgment, and the circuit court affirmed. The Supreme Court granted certiorari and reversed 8-1, holding that Scott was entitled to qualified immunity because Harris was driving recklessly and posed an immediate risk of serious harm to the public. The key issue was the determination of the relevant facts. When deciding a summary judgment motion, courts are required to view the facts and draw reasonable inferences in the light most favorable to the party opposing the motion. In other words, in the defendant files a motion for summary judgment, the court is required to view the facts in the light most favorable to the plaintiff. In this case, Harris alleged that he was driving safely and did not endanger the public. However, Scott introduced into evidence two videotapes of the incident, made by cameras in the two police cars. The Supreme Court held that the facts on summary judgment must be viewed in the light most favorable to the nonmoving party only if there is a genuine dispute as to those facts, and that the videotape conclusively showed that Harris was driving recklessly. Justice Stevens dissented, arguing that the videotape did not conclusively show that Harris was driving recklessly.
