The xx are an English indie pop band formed in 2005 in Wandsworth, London. The group released its debut album, xx, in August 2009. The album was a commercial and critical success and was ranked highly on many best of 2009 lists, including number one on the list compiled by The Guardian and second for NME. In 2010, the band won the Mercury Music Prize for its debut album. Their second album, Coexist, was released on 10 September 2012.

History

2005–2009: formation

The band members met whilst studying at Elliott School, the same school that produced Hot Chip, Burial, Four Tet, and Pierce Brosnan. The group has however downplayed the influence of the school on its career: "A teacher from Elliott who had never even taught us said how great we were. It's a bit annoying. We were left alone, more than anything – although I'm sure that helped us in its own way." Oliver Sim and Romy Madley-Croft started the band as a duo when they were 15. Guitarist Baria Qureshi joined once it began performing in 2005, with Jamie Smith joining a year after.

Ella Edmondson

Eleanor Rose "Ella" Edmondson (born 1986 Hammersmith, London, England) is an English singer-songwriter. Her primary instrument is the guitar though she can also play piano.

Biography

Edmondson is the eldest of three daughters of comedians Adrian Edmondson and Jennifer Saunders. She has two younger sisters, Beatrice and Freya. The majority of Edmondson's childhood was spent in Richmond before her family relocated to Devon. She attended Exeter School where she wrote songs as part of her music GCSE. Edmondson became a fan of death metal because it was the only music that her father didn't like. She went through a goth phase as a teenager and became a satanist. She worked as snowboarding instructor in Canada, a barmaid and a painter and decorator before deciding to focus on music full-time after being encouraged by her father. She "got the bug" after supporting Jools Holland at the Plymouth Pavilions.

She received her first guitar as a Christmas present from her father and taught herself to play by copying him. Her first gig was at 16 supporting Thousand Natural Shocks in Exeter. She made an appearance in an episode of her mother's sitcom Jam and Jerusalem in 2006 performing "Breathe" (and says the character Tash in the series is loosely based on her). In 2007, she released her first EP, Blame Amy and appeared on the compilation Folk Rising. Her debut album, Hold Your Horses, was released on 16 February 2009 on her father's Monsoon record label.
