Thimphu (/tɪmˈpuː/;Tibetan alphabet: ཐིམ་ཕུ [tʰimpʰu]), formerly spelled Thimbu, is the capital and largest city of Bhutan. It is situated in the western central part of Bhutan and the surrounding valley is one of Bhutan's dzongkhags, the Thimphu District. The city became the capital of Bhutan in 1961. As of 2011, it had a population of 91,000.
The city is spread out laterally in a north-south direction on the west bank of the valley formed by the Raidāk River, which is known as the Wang Chuu or Thimphu Chuu in Bhutan. Thimphu is spread over an altitudinal range between 2,248 metres (7,375 ft) and 2,648 metres (8,688 ft). Unusually for a capital city, Thimphu is not served by an airport, but relies on the Paro Airport connected by road some 54 kilometres (34 mi) away.
Thimphu, as the political and economic center of Bhutan, has a dominant agricultural and livestock base, which contributes to 45% of the country's GNP. Tourism, though a contributor to the economy, is strictly regulated, maintaining a balance between the traditional, development and modernization. Thimphu contains most of the important political buildings in Bhutan, including the National Assembly of the newly formed parliamentary democracy and Dechencholing Palace, the official residence of the King, located to the north of the city. As a metropolis and capital city, Thimphu is coordinated by the "Thimphu Structure Plan", an Urban Development Plan which evolved in 1998 with the objective of protecting the fragile ecology of the valley. This development is ongoing with financial assistance from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.

Bhutan (/buːˈtɑːn/; Dzongkha འབྲུག་ཡུལ Dru Ü, IPA: [ʈʂɦu yː]), officially the Kingdom of Bhutan, is a landlocked country in South Asia at the eastern end of the Himalayas. It is bordered to the north by China and to the south, east and west by India. To the west, it is separated from Nepal by the Indian state of Sikkim, while farther south it is separated from Bangladesh by the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal. Bhutan's capital and largest city is Thimphu.
Bhutan existed as a patchwork of minor warring fiefs until the early 17th century. At that time the lama and military leader Ngawang Namgyal, the first Zhabdrung Rinpoche, who was fleeing religious persecution in Tibet, unified the area and cultivated a distinct Bhutanese identity. In the early 20th century, Bhutan came into contact with the British Empire and retained strong bilateral relations with India upon its independence. In 2006, based on a global survey, Business Week rated Bhutan the happiest country in Asia and the eighth-happiest in the world.
Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck (Dzongkha: འཇིགས་མེད་གེ་སར་རྣམ་རྒྱལ་དབང་ཕྱུག་, born 21 February 1980) is the fifth and current reigning Druk Gyalpo or "Dragon King" of the Kingdom of Bhutan. After his father Jigme Singye Wangchuck abdicated the throne in his favour, he became King on 9 December 2006. A public coronation ceremony was held on 1 November 2008, an auspicious year that marked 100 years of monarchy in Bhutan.
Khesar is the eldest son of the fourth Dragon King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and his third wife, Queen Tshering Yangdon. He has a younger sister, Princess Dechen Yangzom, and brother, Prince Jigme Dorji, as well as four half-sisters and three half-brothers.
After completing his higher secondary studies at Yangchenphug High School, Bhutan, Khesar studied abroad at Phillips Academy, Cushing Academy and Wheaton College, all in the United States, before graduating from Magdalen College, University of Oxford, where he completed the Foreign Service Programme and International Relations.

The hike takes about 3 - 4 hours or so, and since I wanted to beat the main crowds, my wife and I left from the hotel quite early to get a head start. It worked out quite well, because we were some of the only people on the trail that early in the morning. The fresh air was amazing. We wound our way along the trail, and soon we could get amazing views of Tiger’s Nest hidden in the clouds and on the side of the cliff. The...

Shrouded in cloud cover amongst the peaks of the eastern Himalayas, I have found that the Kingdom of Bhutan was one of the most exceptional countries I have been privileged enough to visit, known globally for its friendly people and immense landscape. It has up until recently been a country closed to tourists and even now, access to the country remains difficult, with only 100,000 tourist visas being granted each year. This decision to limit tourism within Bhutan is an idea that was created to maintain the culture and tradition of its people, as well as minimise the environmental footprint that travellers place within the country itself. Led by an enigmatic King, as well as a government that tries to ensure above all else an aspect of politics that is not seen anywhere else in the world - ...
Three weeks of traveling Bhutan and Nepal are behind us. We explored the fascinations of Buddhism and Hinduism, eavesdropped the prayers of the monks in various temples in Bhutan. We admired spiritual dances of indigenous people in those colourful fortresses, baffled the valley of Paro on the back of horses and cooled down while rafting in Chitwan. We lived with the indigenous tribes of Taro, allured rhinos and tigers on a safari through Chitwan National Park and took a bath with elephants in Barauli Rivers. We crossed mountain chains at about 3000 meters above sea level, fought with bumpy winding roads, watched the cloudless skies of the Himalaya and Mount Everest and were marvelled by Kathmandu’s crazy streets. And now, we are back! Read the full story on http://markoroth.com/bhutan-nep...

Bhutan in December 2010. Shot with a D90. Sorry about the shaky shots and shitty editing. :)
Exploring in Bhutan for 10 days. I saw a lot of people who believed something strongly. That reminded me that I also believed something strongly in the past. In a scared temple, I sit down and did meditation. The temple was dark and calm but felt as if the atmosphere breathed by itself with will. The temple taught me that darkness did not mean “there was nothing” but “there was something”, which may people believe. People pray to talk with something you cannot see but feel. Bhutan made me explore my mind. Website: http://www.yuichiishida.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/yuichiishidaphotoandfilm/ Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/yuichiishida

The Bhutan Travel Inc of Thimphu, Bhutan provided a little-voiced tour guide who not only completely abandoned me from day 2 onwards, and NEVER greeted nor introduce ANYTHING to me about the places we visited !
