Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, composer and actor. Starting his career with Donald Byrd, he shortly thereafter joined the Miles Davis Quintet where Hancock helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and funk music. Hancock's music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs "cross over" and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
Hancock's best-known compositions include "Cantaloupe Island", "Watermelon Man" (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), "Maiden Voyage", "Chameleon", and the singles "I Thought It Was You" and "Rockit". His 2007 tribute album River: The Joni Letters won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album ever to win the award, after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.

I'm tired of great songs being brutally severed into multiple videos. Enjoy funking out to this uncut, studio rendition of "Chameleon", from the 1973 album Head Hunters. No copyright intended. p.s.- My apologies if you see any ads on this video. I have no control over their placement, nor where any of that revenue goes. I doubt very much Mr. Hancock sees a dime of it, so I'd advise not clicking them. Thanks.

In summer 2013, at Stanford University's Bing Concert Hall, keyboardist and jazz pioneer Herbie Hancock rolled out a concept he has been fascinated with for over 20 years. Using a multichannel surround system from Meyer Sound, Hancock brought the surround sound of movie theatres to a one-of-a-kind live concert experience that cannot be heard elsewhere. To realize Hancock's vision, Meyer Sound set up a system with 45 loudspeakers and 28 channels. The heart of the system was the SpaceMap® multichannel surround panning technology, which allowed Hancock to pan sounds around the 800-seat concert hall in real time, controlling movement via a touch-screen tablet. Watch Hancock and Jason Rauhoff, senior digital audio products specialist for Meyer Sound, discuss the artist's vision of surround s...

Tonight on PBS, I'm joined by Herbie Hancock, who over a fifty-year-plus career has established himself as one of the towering figures in music. He's excelled at all genres -- from jazz to hip-hop, fusion to funk, collaborating with such diverse artists as Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell. He's the recipient of 14 Grammy Awards and just last month received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Foundation of America. He's now written a memoir titled, "Herbie Hancock: Possibilities" that deals frankly with his life, including wrestling with drugs and how his family and his faith in Buddhism helped him overcome his addiction. In this clip, I asked Herbie why he chose to be so honest about this part of his life -- a struggle that until now was not part of the public record. For more of...

Throughout his career he continues to bring the music and it’s roots to the light by playing the music of the deans and innovators of the music ranging from John Coltrane to Ornette Coleman. Joe’s 22nd disc “Bird Songs” is paying tribute to the late Charlie Parker, one of the innovators of be-bop. Parker, hailed as “Bird,” was one of the architects and founding fathers of the style of jazz music that segued into existence as the big-bands of the 1920’s to the 40’s became a thing of the past as musicians were playing smaller trio and quartet ensembles. Lovano goes for the jugular and incorporates some of his new music along with some of Parker’s standards with this grou...
