Earl Rudolph "Bud" Powell (September 27, 1924 – July 31, 1966) was a jazz pianist, born and raised in Harlem, New York City. While Thelonious Monk became his close friend, his greatest influence on piano was Art Tatum.
Along with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Powell was a leading figure in the development of modern jazz, or bebop. His virtuosity led many to call him the Charlie Parker of the piano. Powell was also a composer, and he "greatly extended the range of jazz harmony."
Powell's father was a stride pianist. Powell took to his father's instrument at a very young age, starting on classical-piano lessons at age five. His teacher, hired by his father, was a West Indian man named Rawlins.
But by age ten, Powell also showed interest in the swing-era jazz that could be heard all over the neighborhood. He first appeared in public at a rent party, where he mimicked Fats Waller's playing style. The first jazz composition that he mastered was James P. Johnson's "Carolina Shout".
Powell may refer to:
Roy Owen Haynes (born March 13, 1925) is an American jazz drummer and group leader. Haynes is among the most recorded drummers in jazz, and in a career lasting more than 60 years has played in a wide range of styles ranging from swing and bebop to jazz fusion and avant-garde jazz. He has a highly expressive, personal style ("Snap Crackle" was a nickname given him in the 1950s) and is known to foster a deep engagement in his bandmates.
He has also led his own groups, some performing under the name Hip Ensemble. His most recent recordings as a leader are Fountain of Youth and Whereas, both of which have been nominated for a Grammy Award. He continues to perform worldwide and was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1999. His son Graham Haynes is a cornetist; his son Craig Haynes and grandson Marcus Gilmore are both drummers.
Born in the Roxbury section of Boston, Massachusetts, Haynes made his professional debut in 1944 at the age of seventeen in his native Boston.
The Amazing is a Swedish band whose members include Reine Fiske, who plays with Dungen, and Christoffer Gunrup, who played in Granada and with Anna Järvinen. Fredrik Swahn, Alexis Benson, and drummer Moussa Fadera are also in The Amazing.
The Amazing released their self-titled debut on April 29, 2009 on Subliminal Sounds. The disc was reviewed by the Daily News, and others including Sydsvenskan, and the Swedish newspaper, Svenska Dagbladet. In connection with the first disc, the group played on the program P3 Pop on Swedish Radio P3.
Gentle Stream was released in 2011. The Amazing did a Daytrotter session on December 5, 2012. They played, "Gone" from the album on Late Night with David Letterman on January 18, 2013. The Amazing appeared on World Cafe on February 6, 2013.
Their fourth album, Picture You, was released on February 17, 2015. Allmusic noted that it "is the culmination of all their work, with a combination of wonderfully rich arrangements, inspired playing and singing, and a batch of lengthy songs that both warm the heart and expand the mind".
The Amazing Bud Powell, also called The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1, is an album by jazz pianist Bud Powell, first released on Blue Note in April 1952, as a 10" vinyl. It is part of a loosely connected series with the 1954 companion The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 2 and the 1957 Bud! The Amazing Bud Powell (Vol. 3), all released on Blue Note. The album details two recording sessions. In the first, recorded on August 9, 1949, Powell performed in quintet with Fats Navarro, Sonny Rollins, Tommy Potter and Roy Haynes, and in trio with Potter and Haynes. In the second, on May 1, 1951, Powell performed in trio with Curley Russell and Max Roach, and solo.
The album is critically prized among Powell's releases. Among the more discussed of the album's tracks is the pianist's composition "Un Poco Loco" ("A Little Crazy"), which has been singled out by critics and cultural historians for its musical and cultural significance.
The album was remastered and re-issued on CD in 1989 in chronological order with additional, alternate takes. This version is also available along with Powell's 1947 Roost session on the first disc of The Complete Blue Note and Roost Recordings, a 4 disc box set. The album was remastered again in 2001 by Rudy Van Gelder and re-issued as part of Blue Note's The RVG Edition series, with further expansion and reorganization.

The session that produced this album was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark on April 26, 1962. Personnel were two Danish musicians, the well known and highly regarded bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (a.k.a., 'The Great Dane with the Never-Ending Name') and a drummer about whom I know nothing: William Schiopffe. I will say that Schiopffe's skills are impressive. Sound samples on this page convey the power of the studio performances. Not only are the musicians in excellent form, but the recording itself is clear and captures not only the sound, but somehow manages to record the spirit and energy of the session. What is interesting - to me - is the tracks that were selected. Monk's compositions are well represented with 52nd Street Theme, Straight No Chaser and - obliquely with Rifftide....

In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org - Barry Harris in conjunction with NYU and Artists House Foundation presented a Master Class on November 14th, 2004. Barry charmed us with his talent, humor and the beautiful choral choir scattered through the audience, a surprise and delight to those of us attending. Dr. Harris, a renowned jazz pianist, composer and teacher is a Detroit-bred jazz musician and keeper of the bebop flame. Dizzie Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker and Coleman Hawkins influenced Harris' jazz style and you will hear Harris mention some of these masters in the video above. In this master class, you get a taste of Harris' extensive knowledge and love of teaching and how he has and continues to serve as a mentor to developing pianists.

Some people call me a bad apple
Well I may be bruised but I still taste sweet
Some people call me a bad apple
But I may be the sweetest apple on the tree
I've got the notion to tell you about my history, people
I've got the notion to tell you about how I came up in the world yeah
Now look...I used to go to school and act a clown and fool
And I used to chase the ladies all around
Gimme some
I used to spend my money and tried acting funny
Until I hit my nose on the ground
Some people call me a bad apple
Well I may be bruised but I still taste sweet
Some people call me a bad apple
But I may be the sweetest apple on the tree
Now my teacher tried to tell me
That I could never succeed in the world of business, yeah.
I said, "That's o.k. teacher.
Cause I never did want to give anybody the business. No."
But teacher listen
Teacher, teacher we got a message for you now
Goes like this teacher
Oh teacher
You egghead
You think you've got the world sewed up
You never did learn how to treat a man
You need to eat a slice of humble pie
And the longer you wait the worse it's gonna taste
Some people call me a bad apple
Well I may be bruised but I still taste sweet
Some people call me a bad apple
But I may be the sweetest apple on the tree
It's my time
Hey!
I want everybody to listen to me now
It's my time
Hey!
And I want everybody to listen to me now
Look listen to the record
I'll admit I have been lazy
And I've been called crazy
In my time I've played and played
But I can get down
And quit foolin' around
When the weather gets rough
Situation gets tough
Some people call me a bad apple
Well I may be bruised but I still taste sweet
Some people call me a bad apple
But I may be the sweetest apple on the tree
Some people call me a bad apple
Well I may be the sweetest apple on the tree
I may be the sweetest sweet apple on the tree
