Solan is the district headquarters of Solan district (created on 1 September 1972) in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The largest Municipal Council of Himachal Pradesh, it is located 46 kilometres (29 mi) south of the state capital, Shimla. At an average elevation of 1,600 metres (5,200 ft).[1] The place is named after the Hindu goddess Shoolini devi. Every year in the month of June, a fair celebrating the goddess is held, featuring a 3-day mela at the central Thodo grounds. Solan was the capital of the erstwhile princely state, Bhagat.
It is known as the "Mushroom city of India" because of the vast mushroom farming in the area as well as the Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR) situated at Chambaghat. Solan is crowned as the "City of Red Gold", in reference to the bulk production of tomatoes in the area.[1] The town is situated between Chandigarh (joint capital of Punjab and Harayana) and Shimla (state capital), on the Kalka-Shimla National Highway-22. The Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge heritage railway line, built by the British passes through Solan and is a recognised World Heritage site.
Solan is easily accessible by road as well as train. It is 68 kilometers from Chandigarh (2 hours journey by bus) and 48 kilometers from Shimla (1 hours journey by bus). There are a total of 44 railway tunnels up to Solan.
Solan bypass linking Saproon and Chambaghat.
Barog bypass linking Saproon and Kumarhatti via Anji & Raboun. The Centre Government is also likely to undertake the 4-laning of this road. Surveys and studies have been completed in this regard.
Besides N.H.-22, we have many other important roads connecting Solan to its nearby areas, towns or settlements. These are: -
Solan - Rajgarh road.
Solan - Subathu - Arki Road.
Solan - Kandaghat road via Basal and Salumana.
Solan - Jaunaji road.
Solan - Damrog - Jatoli road.
Solan - Ashwani Khad road. It will ultimately connect Solan to Herth as well as Chail.
As on today Solan itself is not an important tourist spot.nearby. included in that category Chail, Kasauli, Dagshai, Subathu, Kandaghat, Churdhar peak etc. Many visitors destined for Shimla, Kinnour & other areas of the state use this town as a halting station. The tourist infrastructure as on today includes following hotels:-

Besides the Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry at Nauni, other places of interest in Solan include the Shoolini Mata temple, the Jatoli Shiv temple and the Yungdrung Tibetan Monastery, near Nauni, it is in Dolanji approximately 3 km from oachghat oldest in India and second oldest in the world. The Central state liberary is also there, on the mall road which is the only central liberary in Himachal.
A tourist information office(Cafe,Restaurant) is opened at Solan. It may soon have a few tourist mini buses so that travels could be arranged to Dagshai, Kasauli, Subathu, Chail, Giripul etc.
The solan Hills stand on a water - parting between the Sutlej and the Giri, a tributary of the Yamuna. South of solan is the Panchmunda ridge which is crossed by a railway through a tunnel (the longest in the Kalka - Shimla run) at Barog, where a series of fissure to springs occur at its flank. the first ridge above Kalka rises abruptly to pineclad Kasauli at a height of 1927 meters and is joined by a 12 km bridle path.

Himachal Pradesh ([ɦɪmaːtʃəl prəd̪eːʃ]; literally "Snow-laden Region") is a state in North India, forming part of the larger Punjab region. Hima means snow in Sanskrit, and the literal meaning of the state's name is "In the lap of Himalayas". It was named by Acharya Diwakar Datt Sharma, one of the great Sanskrit scholars of Himachal Pradesh.

Solan is the district headquarters of Solan district (created on 1 September 1972) in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The largest Municipal Council of Himachal Pradesh, it is located 46 kilometres (29 mi) south of the state capital, Shimla. At an average elevation of 1,600 metres (5,200 ft).[1] The place is named after the Hindu goddess Shoolini devi. Every year in the month of June, a fair celebrating the goddess is held, featuring a 3-day mela at the central Thodo grounds. Solan was the capital of the erstwhile princely state, Bhagat.
It is known as the "Mushroom city of India" because of the vast mushroom farming in the area as well as the Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR) situated at Chambaghat. Solan is crowned as the "City of Red Gold", in reference to the bulk production of tomatoes in the area.[1] The town is situated between Chandigarh (joint capital of Punjab and Harayana) and Shimla (state capital), on the Kalka-Shimla National Highway-22. The Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge heritage railway line, built by the British passes through Solan and is a recognised World Heritage site.
Solan is easily accessible by road as well as train. It is 68 kilometers from Chandigarh (2 hours journey by bus) and 48 kilometers from Shimla (1 hours journey by bus). There are a total of 44 railway tunnels up to Solan.
Solan bypass linking Saproon and Chambaghat.
Barog bypass linking Saproon and Kumarhatti via Anji & Raboun. The Centre Government is also likely to undertake the 4-laning of this road. Surveys and studies have been completed in this regard.
Besides N.H.-22, we have many other important roads connecting Solan to its nearby areas, towns or settlements. These are: -
Solan - Rajgarh road.
Solan - Subathu - Arki Road.
Solan - Kandaghat road via Basal and Salumana.
Solan - Jaunaji road.
Solan - Damrog - Jatoli road.
Solan - Ashwani Khad road. It will ultimately connect Solan to Herth as well as Chail.

The Central state liberary is also there, on the mall road which is the only central liberary in Himachal.
A tourist information office(Cafe,Restaurant) is opened at Solan. It may soon have a few tourist mini buses so that travels could be arranged to Dagshai, Kasauli, Subathu, Chail, Giripul etc.
The solan Hills stand on a water - parting between the Sutlej and the Giri, a tributary of the Yamuna. South of solan is the Panchmunda ridge which is crossed by a railway through a tunnel (the longest in the Kalka - Shimla run) at Barog, where a series of fissure to springs occur at its flank. the first ridge above Kalka rises abruptly to pineclad Kasauli at a height of 1927 meters and is joined by a 12 km bridle path.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mountain railways of India, Kalka - Shimla route and the train passes through this town.The work on the bypass started in March 2008 and was scheduled to be completed in August 2010. However, many hiccups, including land acquisition in some parts of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, led to the long delays in the project. The bypass, comprising eight bridges and four underpasses, is part of the Zirakpur-Parwanoo four-lane project on the National Highway-22. According to an estimate, nearly 26,000 vehicles, including big trucks, pass through this route. This used to lead to long traffic jams everyday, which not only increased the travel time on this route. The smoke emitted from these stranded vehicles also posed a big health risk to local residents. Even many passengers had died when ambulances ferrying them were stuck in log jams for hours. A doctor had to conduct a delivery in a car carrying a would-be mother in labour pains stranded in a traffic jam at Kalka a few years ago. The passengers, however, will have to shell out Rs 23 for smooth journey at the toll plaza set up at Chandimandir. The journey to Himachal Pradesh, especially to famous tourist place of Chail in Solan district, has become a little costly. A car owner has to pay Rs 23 at the Chandimandir toll plaza, Rs 30 for Himachal Pradesh entry fee at Parwanoo
Parwanoo is a city and a municipal council in Solan district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is an industrial town. It borders Panchkula district of Haryana, and is after the towns of Pinjore and Kalka on the Chandigarh Shimla Highway. In fact it is separated by a river bed from the town of Kalka. Pinjore to Parwanoo is almost a continuous urban belt. From Pinjore there is also a road to Baddi. Another nearby industrial town of Himachal.
The town is divided into 6 different sectors spread randomly across the Shivalik Range in a radius of about 4 km. While sectors 1A, 4 and 6 are totally residential the other sectors 1, 2, 3 & 5 are Industrial with only a few residential areas. Parwanoo is essentially an industrial town with almost 80% of the local population engaged with the industries in one way or other. It is home to the largest fruit processing unit of HPMC and the HP Agro Industries have a Cattle Feed Unit and a Pesticide Unit located here. It also has a Large ESI hospital. Prominent hotels are Shivalik View, Windsmoor and Shelly.

Tourists traveling to Shimla by road are now able to experience a smooth ride with the opening of a 10-km express bypass from Zirakpur to Parwanoo, which would help them avoid traffic snarls on Kalka and Pinjore Towns and get rid of the very long & most unpleasant traffic jam at old Parwanoo Barrier.

The 412-crore project, Built by Jaypee group, a part of 27.5-km expressway project, cutting across Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana, also kickstarts government's mission to introduce radio frequency identification-based electronic toll collection across the toll plazas of the country to help in seamless travel for commuters.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mountain railways of India, Kalka - Shimla route and the train passes through this town.The work on the bypass started in March 2008 and was scheduled to be completed in August 2010. However, many hiccups, including land acquisition in some parts of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, led to the long delays in the project. The bypass, comprising eight bridges and four underpasses, is part of the Zirakpur-Parwanoo four-lane project on the National Highway-22. According to an estimate, nearly 26,000 vehicles, including big trucks, pass through this route. This used to lead to long traffic jams everyday, which not only increased the travel time on this route. The smoke emitted from these stranded vehicles also posed a big health risk to local residents. Even many passengers had died when ambulances ferrying them were stuck in log jams for hours. A doctor had to conduct a delivery in a car carrying a would-be mother in labour pains stranded in a traffic jam at Kalka a few years ago. The passengers, however, will have to shell out Rs 23 for smooth journey at the toll plaza set up at Chandimandir. The journey to Himachal Pradesh, especially to famous tourist place of Chail in Solan district, has become a little costly. A car owner has to pay Rs 23 at the Chandimandir toll plaza, Rs 30 for Himachal Pradesh entry fee at Parwanoo
Parwanoo is a city and a municipal council in Solan district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is an industrial town. It borders Panchkula district of Haryana, and is after the towns of Pinjore and Kalka on the Chandigarh Shimla Highway. In fact it is separated by a river bed from the town of Kalka. Pinjore to Parwanoo is almost a continuous urban belt. From Pinjore there is also a road to Baddi. Another nearby industrial town of Himachal.
The town is divided into 6 different sectors spread randomly across the Shivalik Range in a radius of about 4 km. While sectors 1A, 4 and 6 are totally residential the other sectors 1, 2, 3 & 5 are Industrial with only a few residential areas. Parwanoo is essentially an industrial town with almost 80% of the local population engaged with the industries in one way or other. It is home to the largest fruit processing unit of HPMC and the HP Agro Industries have a Cattle Feed Unit and a Pesticide Unit located here. It also has a Large ESI hospital. Prominent hotels are Shivalik View, Windsmoor and Shelly.

Kalka–Shimla Railway-
The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge railway in North-West India travelling along a mostly mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. It is known for dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages. The Kalka–Shimla Railway was built in 1898. to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the rest of the Indian rail system. At the time of construction 107 tunnels and 864 bridges, were built throughout the course of the track. The Chief Engineer of the project was H.S. Herlington.
The locomotives used during the earlier period were manufactured by Sharp, Stewart and Company, and larger locomotives were introduced which were manufactured by Hunslet Engine Company. The diesel and diesel-hydraulic locomotives were started operation in 1955 and 1970 respectively. The railway was declared a heritage by the Himachal Pradesh government in 2007, and in 2008 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongwith the other Mountain Railways of India.

The route winds from the Himalayan Shivalik Hills foothills at Kalka to several important points such as Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, Taradevi, Barog, Salogra, Totu (Jutogh), Summerhill and Shimla at an altitude of 2,076 meters (6,811 ft).
Originally 107 tunnels were built on Kalka Shimla Railway Track and 102 remain in use. The longest tunnel is at Barog. Engineer Colonel Barog dug the tunnel from both ends and could not align them and was symbolically fined one rupee. He couldn't live with the shame and committed suicide inside the incomplete tunnel.[8] Chief Engineer H.S. Herlington later completed the tunnel with help from Bhalku, a local sadhu.

Nalagarh was the capital of the kingdom of Hinddur founded by Raja Ajai Chand in 1100 A.D. It was ruled by the Chandela Rajputs. The Chandela kings were great patrons of art and architecture. Raja Ram Chander, another illustrious ruler of the same dynasty, was also a great builder who constructed the Ramgarh Fort (Now renamed as Ramshehar heritage fort resort in Himachal by the present occupants) and the town of Ramshere in 1540 AD.
Raja Surendra Singh was the last ruler of Nalagarh and his son, Raja Vijayendra is the present ceremonial ruler of Nalagarh. The Ramshehar Fort Resort has a series of structures that are mostly built in the Mughal style of architecture but elements of Hindu and even the British architecture cannot be ignored. The Fort is located on a hillock at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas affording a panoramic view of the Shivalik Hills beyond the Sirsa River.
