Namibia (/nəˈmɪbiə/, /næˈ-/), officially the Republic of Namibia (German: Republik Namibia ; Afrikaans: Republiek van Namibië), and formerly German South-West Africa and then South West Africa, is a country in southern Africa whose western border is the Atlantic Ocean. It shares land borders with Zambia and Angola to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south and east. Although it does not border Zimbabwe, less than 200 metres of the Zambezi River (essentially a small bulge in Botswana to achieve a Botswana/Zambia micro-border) separates them at their closest points. It gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990, following the Namibian War of Independence. Its capital and largest city is Windhoek. Namibia is a member state of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the Commonwealth of Nations.
The dry lands of Namibia were inhabited since early times by San, Damara, and Namaqua, and since about the 14th century AD by immigrating Bantu who came with the Bantu expansion. Most of the territory became a German Imperial protectorate in 1884 and remained a German colony until the end of World War I. In 1920, the League of Nations mandated the country to South Africa, which imposed its laws and, from 1948, its apartheid policy. The port of Walvis Bay and the offshore Penguin Islands had been annexed by the Cape Colony under the British crown by 1878 and had become an integral part of the new Union of South Africa at its creation in 1910.

January 2004 The introduction of sweeping land reforms in Namibia is threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of white farmers. Emmanuel Ismael's home is a small farm in the heart of Duerreland, Namibia. Yet he fears that all might soon be lost in the face of President Sam Nujoma's land reclamation programme. With black farmers desperate for land, the Namibian government has adopted a strategy designed to win them votes -- evicting white farmers. 192 foreigners have already lost their farms. But European farmers are worried that only the politicians will profit from the changes. "They are not battling against poverty but are simply changing the colour of the skin of the owners." In fact, the first victims of the land expropriation will be the black workers. Farmers believe that foreign inv...

Happy New Year! This is the final trip report from my Africa trip this past summer, so I hope you enjoy! After Safari in South Africa, Zambia, and Botswana, it was time to head to Namibia for four nights. Air Namibia (or Air Nam) had the only nonstop, and it was the flight my tour company booked me on. (FYI, the route was discontinued in October 2016.) I must say I was quite impressed with Air Namibia. I was offered a meal box that actually tasted decent, as well as bread and water on this hour ling flight. A really fantastic service! The ERJ is also a really comfortable plane with the 1-2 configuration. Air Nam doesn't do seat assignments on short flights, but at least there are no middle seats on the ERJ. The music is Spring in My Step by Silent Partner. BTW I don't have any travel p...
The Namibian Economy, Past, Present and Future’ Conference was hosted by the Economic Association of Namibia on 10 November 2016, at the Safari Hotel. It attracted economists, politicians and foreign investors far and wide... The Conference was meant to to review our current, tumultuous economic environment. Since the mid-term budget announcement, everyone has felt the pinch. Government tightened its coffers, tenders were frozen, food prices rose and workers were retrenched. With little change predicted on our medium term forecast for economic growth, investment will be the key driver to save our economy... from a plummeting currency and hyper- inflation. Since then, President Geingob has been travelling the world to meet with potential investors in places like Cuba, France and London. It ...

The San people (or Saan), also known as Bushmen or Basarwa, are members of various indigenous hunter-gatherer people of Southern Africa, whose territories span Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho[1] and South Africa. There is a significant linguistic difference between the northern people living between the Okavango River in Botswana and Etosha National Park in northwestern Namibia, extending up into southern Angola; the central people of most of Namibia and Botswana, extending into Zambia and Zimbabwe; and the southern people in the central Kalahari towards the Molopo River, who are the last remnant of the previously extensive indigenous San of South Africa. In celebration of Namibian Independence Day (March 21, 1990), here is "Namibia" from Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers 'JAHMEKYA' album (1991)!
With more than 300 days a year, the sun dominates this country so much that it’s even shining from their flag. It’s a barren land, sometimes like from another planet but still familiar. A land of contrasts and colours with wide landscapes and fascinating deserts. Influenced by various cultures during colonization and now reborn from the shadows of Apartheid in 1990, Namibia gives a beautiful collage of culture, language, art, music and food.

Seven countries in Southern Africa are modelling how to deliver integrated SRHR-HIV services in order to improve uptake. This is Namibia's story. The SRH-HIV Linkages programme aims to link HIV prevention, treatment and care with Sexual Reproductive Health Services. While this may appear logical, it is not the way public health clinics are currently organized in these countries. The programme is about making small subtle changes in health care delivery that have a big impact on the lives of ordinary people. It uses the opportunity to provide comprehensive services to any client who seeks health services at the clinics. If they seek HIV testing, they are also offered family planning, antenatal services, cervical cancer and TB screening, and more. The results suggest that the project has ...

In June 1978 it was learnt that SWAPO was preparing to attack the military bases at Katima Mulilo, Wenela and M''pacha. To meet this attack two combat teams viz Alpha and Bravo were formed. The attack started on 23 August with a stand-off bombardment using 122 mm rockets on Katima Mulilo. One of these penetrated the roof of a barrack killing ten soldiers. After an artillery and mortar battle the two combat units crossed the border. Combat team Bravo's target was a SWAPO base camp approximately 30 km from the Zambian border but they found it deserted and returned to M''pacha without having accomplished this objective. Combat Unit Alpha managed to catch up with the rear guard of a number of fleeing terrorists but were enticed into an ambush. In the fighting which ensued five terrorists w...

UN representatives for Somalia, have reported great progress in the war against terror. Foreign Affairs Minister,Abdusalam Hadliye Omer, told the UN general assembly that Al Qaeda linked militant group Al- Shabaab could be militarily defeated.Omer says the terror group now controlled less than ten percent of the country. Although the insurgents continue to make sporadic attacks in the capital, much of its leadership has been eliminated in recent months. In efforts to restore peace, Somalia's government is trying to enhance its security and prevent new attacks
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has told a security conference in Germany that terrorist groups have trained in his country and that the African states need to be organized. President Mohamud admitted his country has been plagued by al-Shabab militants as well as corruption and political infighting and has only made limited progress in setting up a working political system. The presence of Boko Haram—the Takfiri terror group that has pledged allegiance to Daesh—adds a deadly dimension to an already alarming situation in Somalia. President Mohamud added, ‘The terrorists are so linked together, they are associated and so organized, (that) we the world we need to be so organized.’ But is this call for cooperation simply window dressing? In Islam, the Devil is known as ʾIblīs (Arabic: إبليس, plural: ابالسة ʾAbālisa) or Shayṭān (Arabic: شيطان, plural: شياطين Shayāṭīn). According to the Quran, God created Iblis out of "smokeless fire or from the pure flame of fire" (along with all of the other jinn) and created man out of clay. The primary characteristic of the Devil, is that he has the power to cast evil suggestions into the heart of men, women, and jinn, Iblis was proud and arrogant and considered himself superior to Adam, since Adam was made from clay and Iblis from smokeless fire. For this act of disobedience, God cursed him to Hell for eternity, but gave him respite until the Day of Judgment (Qiyāmah), after Iblis requested it. Iblis obtained permission from God and vowed that he would use this time to lead all human...

When people think of diamonds poverty is not usually the first think that comes to mind. The reality is diamonds are mined in some of the poorest countries on earth. One might think the answer would be simply stop buying diamonds from continents like Africa based on the injustices of the past (and unfortunately ongoing in Zimbabwe) but this would only make things worse for those struggling to survive. At Precious Earth we believe the answer is to responsibly harness the economical potential of traceable diamonds and empower the local people through jobs and education in the territories, like Namibia, where diamonds are mined. Namibia Diamonds are the only diamonds that feature the Team Namibia* logo and come with a validation certificate. This assures you that your diamond is a natural, et...

A 500-year-old Portuguese ship filled with gold estimated to be worth $13,000,000 and other treasures was unearthed in the Namibian desert along Africa’s “Skeletal Coast.” Miners from De Beers discovered the wreckage of Bom Jesus, a ship traveling from Lisbon to India in 1533, in the pit of a drained lagoon in 2008. Once excavation of the site was complete minors discovered hundreds of gold coins. It is believed the ship went down due to a combination of excess cargo and bad weather. The ship will remain in the custody of Namibia as the Portuguese government generously waived their right to the wreckage.

Travel video about destination Namibia. Windhoek is the flourishing capital of Namibia and it is from here that we begin a journey through this country and experience some of the magic of the Dark Continent on a luxurious train - the Desert Express!Dating back to colonial times, the Christ Church is a reminder of the end of hostilities between the Germans and the indigenous population during the period when it was known as ‘German West Africa’, and indeed German influence in this part of the world is still very much in evidence today. I fly into Windhoek, the surprisingly modern capital city on Namibia. I wander along Independence Avenue to see the old colonial buildings and a meteorite memorial. Then head up Robert Mugabe Avenue to see the church, the parliament and the independence monument. I finish my tour by wandering the botanical gardens in search of a rock hyrax.

Namibia! A land of enchanting desert beauty. The country of Namibia has a population of 3 million people total and is primarily made up by desert, yet there is no end to the adventures to be had on this laid back, wondrous land. Here are my top 5 tips for traveling in Namibia! I was personally made a target and was fortunate enough to be in a large enough group of people that thankfully I was not taken. Long story short a group of 5 girls and 1 guy and I were making our way to the ship (walking at night) when a ...
