Apia is the capital and the largest city of Samoa. From 1900 to 1919, it was the capital of the German Samoa. The city is located on the central north coast of Upolu, Samoa's second largest island. Apia is the only "city" in Samoa and falls within the political district (itūmālō) of Tuamasaga.
The Apia Urban Area has a population of 36,735 (2011 Census) and is generally referred to as the City of Apia. The geographic boundaries of Apia Urban Area is mainly from Letogo village to the new industrialized region of Apia known as Vaitele.
Apia was originally a small village (the 1800 population was 304), from which the country's capital took its name. Apia village still exists within the larger modern capital of Apia which has grown into a sprawling urban area with many villages. Like every other settlement in the country, Apia village has its own matai chiefly leaders and fa'alupega (geneaology & customary greetings) according to fa'a Samoa.
The modern capital Apia was founded in the 1850s and has been the official capital of Samoa since 1959.

The rooms are comfortable and overlook the stunning lagoon area. They also provide free bottled water in the room. We had an overnight flight so we freshened up before heading out for a dive with Aqua Samoa ( http://www.aquasamoa.com ) in the warm waters of the surrounding coral reefs and lagoons. The colourful plate corals were stunning and the warm water made for a comfortable and enjoyable dive. Back at the resort it was time to relax and enjoy a few cocktails in the pool bar and on their secluded lagoon beach. There are a few different restaurants there to enjoy a meal at too. The flea markets are right in the centre of town in close proximity to the fresh produce and fish markets and are open from 7:00am to 5:00pm every day apart from Sunday. Most pricesare fixed but you can certainly ask for a discount of 10% or so if you're buying multiple items without offending anyone, but do be prepared to accept 'no' for an answer.

For more great information, photos and video about Samoa, see PleaseTakeMeTo's Samoa Travel Guide - http://www.pleasetakemeto.com/samoa These markets have a huge variety of fruit and other fresh produce and are busy with locals for most of the time they're open - that's 7:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Saturday. It's not only a good place to shop but also to meet people as a lot of locals do. There are some great options for lunch for the equivalent of about $5 Australian. Here you're pretty much in the centre of town, a minute or so walk from the flea markets and a few minutes from the fresh fish market where you can pick up the best Samoan sea food right off the boats. There is a major bus station adjacent to the markets.
