Several historical bridges named London Bridge have spanned the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark, in central London. The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1974, is a box girder bridge built from concrete and steel. This replaced a 19th-century stone-arched bridge, which in turn superseded a 600-year-old medieval structure. This was preceded by a succession of timber bridges, the first built by the Roman founders of London.
The current bridge stands at the western end of the Pool of London but is positioned 30 metres (98 ft) upstream from previous alignments. The traditional ends of the medieval bridge were marked by St Magnus-the-Martyr on the northern bank and Southwark Cathedral on the southern shore. Until Putney Bridge opened in 1729, London Bridge was the only road-crossing of the Thames downstream of Kingston-upon-Thames. Its importance has been the subject of popular culture throughout the ages such as in the nursery rhyme "London Bridge Is Falling Down" and its inclusion within art and literature.
London i/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties: the small district of the City of London and the county of Greater London. The latter constitutes the vast majority of London, though historically it was split between Middlesex (a now abolished county), Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.
A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles without closing the way underneath such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. There are many different designs that each serve a particular purpose and apply to different situations. Designs of bridges vary depending on the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed and anchored, the material used to make it, and the funds available to build it.
The Oxford English Dictionary traces the origin of the word bridge to an Old English word brycg, of the same meaning. The word can be traced directly back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰrēw-. The word for the card game of the same name has a different origin.
The first bridges made by humans were probably spans of cut wooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simple support and crossbeam arrangement. Some early Americans used trees or bamboo poles to cross small caverns or wells to get from one place to another. A common form of lashing sticks, logs, and deciduous branches together involved the use of long reeds or other harvested fibers woven together to form a connective rope capable of binding and holding together the materials used in early bridges.
My Fair Lady is a musical based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a lady. The original Broadway, London and film versions all starred Rex Harrison.
The musical's 1956 Broadway production was a momentous hit, setting a record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. It was followed by a hit London production, a popular film version, and numerous revivals. It has been called "the perfect musical".
On a rainy night in Edwardian London, opera patrons are waiting under the arches of Covent Garden for cabs. Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, runs into a young man called Freddy. She admonishes him for spilling her bunches of violets in the mud, but she cheers up after selling one to an older gentleman. She then flies into an angry outburst when a man copying down her speech is pointed out to her. The man explains that he studies phonetics and can identify anyone's origin by their accent. He laments Eliza's dreadful speech, asking why so many English people don't speak properly and explaining his theory that this is what truly separates social classes, rather than looks or money ("Why Can't the English?"). He declares that in six months he could turn Eliza into a lady by teaching her to speak properly. The older gentleman introduces himself as Colonel Pickering, a linguist who has studied Indian dialects. The phoneticist introduces himself as Henry Higgins, and, as they both have always wanted to meet each other, Higgins invites Pickering to stay at his home in London. He distractedly throws his change into Eliza's basket, and she and her friends wonder what it would be like to live a comfortable, proper life ("Wouldn't It Be Loverly?").
Falling Down is a 1993 psychological thriller film directed by Joel Schumacher and written by Ebbe Roe Smith. The film stars Michael Douglas in the lead role of William Foster, a divorcé and unemployed former defense engineer. The film centers on Foster as he goes on a violent rampage across the city of Los Angeles, trying to reach the house of his estranged ex-wife in time for his daughter's birthday party. Along the way, a series of encounters, both trivial and provocative, cause him to react with violence and make sardonic observations on life, poverty, the economy, and commercialism. Robert Duvall co-stars as Martin Prendergast, an aging LAPD Sergeant on the day of his retirement, who faces his own frustrations, even as he tracks down Foster.
The title of the film, referring to Foster's mental collapse, is taken from the nursery rhyme "London Bridge Is Falling Down", which is a recurring motif throughout the film.
William Foster is an engineer, recently laid off in the early 90s recession, and under a restraining order keeping him away from his recently divorced wife Beth and their child, Adele. Stuck in a traffic jam Foster abandons his car, planning to walk across Los Angeles to "go home" and attend Adele's birthday party. He repeatedly calls his ex-wife from a phone booth and runs out of change. Police Sergeant Martin Prendergast happens on the abandoned car, helping moving it off the road while musing about it being his last day before retirement.

An experimental Time Lapse film exploring rush hour in London. Inspired by Koyaanisqatsi, the film uses time lapse photography techniques to create the visuals. A DSLR was set up to take a frame every 2 secs with a shutter speed of around 0.3 - 2 secs with an ND8 filter was used to create a motion blur which helps to increase the sense of rush and movement within the film.
London in a miniature look. This video was shot during a period of 2 months from public vantage points, private offices I was allowed access to and places where I shouldn't been. The locations shown include The Tower of London, Liverpool Street Station, Big Ben, Heron Tower, Barbican, London Wall, Earl's Court Station, Bishopsgate, Millennium Bridge, Embankment, Kings Cross, Paternoster Square, Changing the Guard, Royal Exchange, Piccadilly Circus and Tate Modern. All sequences were captured as RAW images and manipulated in After Effects to achieve the miniature / tilt shift look. In total I shot 25,850 images and 4,980 made it into the final edit. A short time-lapse film of London at night. This film was shot from November 2011 to February 2012 . As the nights drew longer and winter settled in, it provided me with the ideal opportunity to get out and shoot London at night. I'll be honest, I'm not really a city person! but there is something quite beautiful about the city at night. As I commute to London for work, I took the time to shoot this film on my walk back to the train station and over a period of 4 months I slowly collected footage. I wanted to try and get away from the cliches of London like Big Ben and Tower Bridge and focus more on the modern architecture. The city is ever changing as new buildings are constantly appearing. In a few years time I could go back and shoot a completely new film based on the new bui...
'Certain places of transition or interchange, such as airports and other places of mass transit and sites of new technologies are the passing places of angels... it is in such spaces that messages from angels increase in number and intensity'. (Michel Serres) Using the Millennium Bridge as a symbol, this project explores the psychology of transitory spaces. As the only pedestrian bridge in London, The Millennium Bridge holds its own kind of magic. The video was produced in conjunction with a book of photographs. The whole project aim to evoke the Bridge dual identity – a realistic and physical personality during the day(photos), a spiritual and ethereal space at night (video). Light and sounds emanating from the bridge combine to create a journey from the ordinary to the spiritual. The b...

The Shard is Europe's tallest building. The Shard's architect, Renzo Piano is quoted as saying: 'Being an architect is a very dangerous job, because if you are wrong then of course everybody knows,'. Like any great artist, he is a risk taker, he bears all to more than 375,000 people daily who pass by close to The Shard, via London Bridge Station. I have been fascinated by The Shard, ever since I worked on the London summer Olympics and had it wink at me, temptingly, each morning as I opened my hotel curtains. One day, I knew I would be back ready to time-lapse from the inside of this marvellous structure, from The View From The Shard observation deck, and from street level. I've tried to keep things short and sweet with some additional views of London from vertigo-inducing locations. ...

Travel video about destination Tower of London & tower Bridge in England. The Tower Of London is the home of the Crown Jewels and one of the many historical sights of the United Kingdom’s capital city. Just as with the British Empire, the Tower has a colourful and dramatic past and it was originally designed as a fortress by William The Conqueror. Not far from the Tower’s original main entrance prisoners were taken through Traitors’ Gate into the notorious dungeons. In1843 the moat dried up but the old fortress and its towers have survived to the present day. It must have been a terrifying experience to be imprisoned there and few prisoners lived to tell the tale of the rigours of the Tower. Many members of the English royal family were executed in the Tower but there were times when offici...

Tower Bridge (built 1886--1894) is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London which crosses the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name, and has become an iconic symbol of London. The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for Queen Elizabet...

Pathé archive voice over: To few people in a lifetime comes the chance of seeing such a gigantic blaze as the funeral pyre of the Crystal Palace, one of the few remaining links with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Narrator: In 1936 a fire destroyed the spectacular building known as the Crystal Palace - the same building that 85 years earlier had housed the famous ' Great Exhibition' , one of the most important events of the Victorian era. On 1 May 1851 the Great Exhibition was opened by Queen Victoria. Her husband - Prince Albert - led the development of the Exhibition, which was the first of its kind.
Opened on the 30th June 1894, Tower Bridge in London is a combination of a Bascule and Suspension Bridge. It's recently undergone a makeover with the addition of glass floor sections in the East and West walkways which gave me an idea...
The b...
www.anatoleya.co.uk https://twitter.com/Anatoleya I usually make stopmotion videos, but thought I would take a break and make a one-off timelapse video. Here it is. All the footage was taken over a three week period in November 2011, except for the first two daytime scenes of St Paul's Cathedral and the Millennium bridge at the beginning which were taken near the end of October 2011, and the rotation scene at Oxford Circus halfway through the video which was taken as part of another project earlier in the year for Minimood Records. N.B. I used a lot of the same footage for a commercial project for Ki Records: http://youtu.be/016uZ1V5jIs I uploaded that at 2896x1936 resolution. ___________ EQUIPMENT: a Canon 5D Mark II [with a Canon f/1.4 50mm and a f/1.4 24mm lens], and an Olympus E...
I've tried to keep things short and sweet with some additional views of London from vertigo-inducing locations. ...
A short film shot during a week-long business trip to the City of London. Didn't have much free time but tried to make the most of it. Scenes from Tower of London, City of London, Thames, London Bridge, and Covent Garden. #THISISBRITAIN
10% off Film Convert at gopb.co/filmconvert All shot handheld on the way to and on London's South Bank and Waterloo Bridge. The top and tail were shot for an early test (using a Sigma ART 24mm and Sony 90mm FE Macro) but the main section was all shot new using the Zeiss Batis 25mm and 85mm. I used the clear zoom function a lot to get longer than 85mm. It's fabulous! Shot in 4K 25p and HD 100fps for 2 shots upscaled to 4K Picture profile was S-Log 3 and S-Gamut Cine. Graded within Premiere using the FilmConvert plug in. A7sII profiles downloaded for this picture profile and a custom look was created using the Velvia stock as a preset. The first shot on the South Bank is soft but I liked so I kept it in. We aim for perfection but rarely get it! I also shot lots of stills during this, ...

London bridge is falling and the tower of piza is
leaning
The statue of liberty is green with envy
Penny for your thoughts penny for your lows
The clothes and dress codes tradition of false things
London bridge is falling
Indias got salt on its coast
Theres a tea party in boston
London bridge is falling
Made us wood and clay that wouldn't stay
No matter how hard the people pray
The materials just washed away
They could have used rocks rocks don't bend or bow
But quite frankly they had too many enemies to stone
The empire the empire (state) the empire state is
building
The taj is on fire these horus cats make a killing
Heathens bow down to the sirens
An emergency for bread and cheese
(they yell shut up and freeze?)
The earth shall inherit the meek
When canada put up a fence cuz their medicines so cheap
America's asleep (Yeah I'm snoring) and london bridge
And london bridge is falling
I got the best seat in the house they hired me as a
watchman
London bridge is falling indias got salt on its coast
Theres a tea party in boston, london bridge is falling
They made us stainless steel and wrought iron
That wall in china aint so great I built a bridge over
a hymen
It goes up to the sky and mother mary is cryin
My fair lady don't cry its gonna be alright!
Cus I'm alive - I'm alive and kickin'
