Boko Haram

Boko Haram, referred to by themselves as Wilāyat Gharb Ifrīqīyyah (Arabic: الولاية الإسلامية غرب أفريقيا‎, (Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP), and Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād (Arabic: جماعة أهل السنة للدعوة والجهاد‎, "Group of the People of Sunnah for Preaching and Jihad"), is an Islamic extremist group based in northeastern Nigeria, also active in Chad, Niger and northern Cameroon. The group's leader is Abubakar Shekau. The group had alleged links to al-Qaeda, but in March 2015, it announced its allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Since the current insurgency started in 2009, it has killed 20,000 and displaced 2.3 million from their homes.

After its founding in 2002, Boko Haram's increasing radicalization led to a violent uprising in July 2009 in which its leader was summarily executed. Its unexpected resurgence, following a mass prison break in September 2010, was accompanied by increasingly sophisticated attacks, initially against soft targets, and progressing in 2011 to include suicide bombings of police buildings and the United Nations office in Abuja. The government's establishment of a state of emergency at the beginning of 2012, extended in the following year to cover the entire northeast of Nigeria, led to an increase in both security force abuses and militant attacks.

Haram

Haram (/ˈhɛərəm, ˈhær-/; Arabic: حَرَام‎ ḥarām) or Haraam is an Arabic term meaning "forbidden." Thus it may refer to: either something sacred to which access is forbidden to the people who are not in a state of purity or who are not initiated into the sacred knowledge; or to an evil thus "sinful action that is forbidden to be done." The term also denotes something "set aside," thus being the Arabic equivalent of the Hebrew concept קָדוֹש qadoš, and the concept of Sacer (cf. sacred) in Roman Law and religion. In Islamic jurisprudence, haram is used to refer to any act that is forbidden by Allah, and is one of five Islamic commandments (الأحكام الخمسة‎ (al-ahkam al-khamsah)) that define the morality of human action. Acts that are haram are typically prohibited in the religious texts of the Quran and the Sunnah. The category of haram is the highest status of prohibition. Islam teaches that a haram (sinful) act is recorded by an angel on the person's left shoulder. If something is considered haram, it remains prohibited no matter how good the intention is or how honorable the purpose is. A haram is converted into a gravitational force on the day of judgment and placed on mizan (weighing scales). Views of different madhabs can vary significantly regarding what is or is not haram.

Cinema of Nigeria

The cinema of Nigeria, often referred to as Nollywood, consists of films produced in Nigeria; its history dates back to as early as the late 19th century and into the colonial era in early 1900s. The history and development of the Nigerian motion picture industry is sometimes generally classified in four main eras: the Colonial era, Golden Age, Video film era and the emerging New Nigerian cinema.

Film as a medium first arrived Nigeria in the late 19th century, in the form of peephole viewing of motion picture devices. These were soon replaced in early 20th century with improved motion picture exhibition devices, with the first set of films screened at the Glover Memorial Hall in Lagos from 12 to 22 August 1903. The earliest feature film made in Nigeria is the 1926's Palaver produced by Geoffrey Barkas; the film was also the first film ever to feature Nigerian actors in a speaking role As at 1954, mobile cinema vans played to atleast 3.5 million people in Nigeria, and films being produced by the Nigerian Film Unit were screened for free at the 44 available cinemas. The first film entirely copyrighted to the Nigerian Film unit is Fincho (1957) by Sam Zebba; which is also the first Nigerian film to be shot in colour.

Benji Boko

Benjamin Gordon (born 5 October 1986), known professionally as Benji Boko, is an English DJ and producer known for his unique live remixes and highly energetic shows.

Early life and career

Benji Boko grew up in Brighton, East Sussex. He first started to get interested in remixing from a young age when he used to store TV theme tunes on his computer and tried to mix them into each other. It was when he heard DJ Yoda for the first time that he realised that someone else was doing the same thing which convinced him to continue to explore and improve his style of mixing. When he was 18, Benji bought his first turntables and began to enhance his live mixing skills at friend's house parties in Brighton and eventually hassling clubs and promoters to allow him to play.

In 2008 Benji Boko moved to Leeds to attend Leeds College of Music graduating with a BA(Hons) in Music Production. He managed to get a regular DJ slot at HIFI in Leeds. He played there for three years where he continued to experiment and improve his live mixing ability. In 2011 he graduated from Leeds College of Music and returned to Brighton where he used what he learnt in his three years in Leeds and continued to perform as a DJ.
