San Francisco (/sæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California and the only consolidated city-county in California. San Francisco encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, which makes it the smallest county in the state. It has a density of about 18,187 people per square mile (7,022 people per km2), making it the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth-most populous city in California, after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, and the 13th-most populous city in the United States—with a Census-estimated 2014 population of 852,469. The city and its surrounding areas are known as the San Francisco Bay Area, and are a part of the larger OMB designated San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland combined statistical area, the fifth most populous in the nation with an estimated population of 8.6 million.
Lake Street Dive is an indie pop band that was founded in 2004 in Boston, Massachusetts. The band consists of Rachael Price (lead vocals), Mike "McDuck" Olson (trumpet, guitar), Bridget Kearney (upright bass), and Mike Calabrese (drums). They met while attending the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. The band was named after a street with many dive bars in Olson's hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band tours in both North America and Europe from their base in Brooklyn.
The initial idea (2004) was for the band to create a 'free country band' — as in country music, played free. This concept was abandoned in favor of something that 'actually sounded good'.
The band recorded a song written by Bridget Kearney which was submitted to the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. As a result, Kearney won the Jazz category in 2005. With the cash and 1000 CDs award, Lake Street Dive recorded their debut CD in 2006, in this episode.... They did another self release called Promises, Promises and a video filmed live at the Lizard Lounge in 2010.
Francisco is the Spanish and Portuguese form of the masculine given name Franciscus (corresponding to English Francis).
In Spanish, people with the name Francisco sometimes are nicknamed "Paco": San Francisco de Asís was known as Pater Comunitatis (The Community father) when he founded the Franciscan order, "Paco" is a short form of "Pater Comunitatis". Also, in Spanish Latin America and in the Philippines, people with the name Francisco are called "Pancho". "Kiko" is also used as a nickname in the Philippines.
In Portuguese, people named Francisco are commonly nicknamed "Chico" (shíco) or "Kiko". This is also a less-common nickname for Francisco in Spanish too.
The Mormon pioneers were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), also known as Latter-day Saints, who migrated across the United States from the Midwest to the Salt Lake Valley in what is today the U.S. state of Utah. At the time of the cease fire and planning of the exodus in 1846, the territory was owned by the Republic of Mexico, which soon after went to war with the United States over the annexation of Texas. Salt Lake Valley became American territory as a result of this war.
The journey was taken by about 70,000 people beginning with advanced parties sent out by church fathers in March 1846 after the assassination of Mormon prophet Joseph Smith made it clear the faith could not remain in Nauvoo, Illinois—which the church had recently purchased, improved, renamed and developed because of the Missouri Mormon War setting off the Illinois Mormon War. The well organized wagon train migration began in earnest in April 1847, and the period (including the flight from Missouri in 1838 to Nauvoo) known as the Mormon Exodus is, by convention among social scientists, traditionally assumed to have ended with the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Not everyone could afford to transport a family by railroad, and the transcontinental railroad network only serviced limited main routes, so Wagon train migrations to the far west continued sporadically until the 20th century,

It is difficult to believe that this lively, cosmopolitan city is under constant threat from earthquake, the only rumble being that of the famous cable cars as they vie up and down the city's hilly roads. A boat trip is a great way to see Fisherman's Wharf, various maritime museums, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, former home of Robert 'The Birdman' Stroud, Machine Gun Kelly and Al Capone. Built in 1776, San Francisco's first stone building, Mission Dolores, still stands today. Led by the Franciscan Padres, the Christianized Indians built a church, in the cemetery of which many of the city's original settlers were laid to rest. ...

NO FREE WALLS is an in-depth look at Brooklyn's changing landscape, through the eyes of Joseph Ficalora, the founder and inadvertent art curator of The Bushwick Collective. Joe, son of Italian immigrants, grew up in Bushwick, a neighborhood in Brooklyn once ravaged by drugs, neglect and violence. He lost his mother to cancer as an adult and rather than going into deep depression, he decided to honor his parents and the neighborhood that raised him. He started contacting muralists from all over the world and 5 years later, Bushwick is one of the fastest growing gentrified neighborhoods in New York. As advertisers and new residents flood Bushwick, longtime residents struggle to keep up with rising rents and changing landscape. Complex News Documentaries asks: Can a community thriving off...

Shot by an electric railway enthusiast named Ben Young in the early 1950s, this silent 16mm home movie shows trolley cars of Brooklyn, New York including PCC or President's Conference Committee cars which ran from 1936 to 1956. Filmmaker Ben Young later became the President of the Sunrise Chapter (Long Island) of the National Railroad Historical Foundation. After his passing a portion of his collection was sold, including 4 reels of 16mm film. This particular film shows the Brooklyn PCCs heading to Coney Island, and throughout the system where the Brooklyn trolleys operated, along with the subway and elevated lines. Trolleys were once such a part of the Brooklyn scene that the local baseball club was named the ‘Trolley Dodgers’, later shortened to Dodgers when the club moved to Los Angel...
We took the train heading back but the subway was still messed up and it was still going crazy after the power outage and subway lines were slowly going back to normal but it was still good
(Don Reid)
From Tampa Florida's pride and joy to California shame
She left home and came out west and changed her Christian name
She thumbed her way for seven days and way too many nights
And hit the streets of San Francisco running for her life.
A week in cosmetology two weeks in airline school
Seven days of shorthand in a secretarial pool
But now deskclerks and bellhops now know her by her face
And the folks of Tampa know her by her mama's disgrace.
All through the day she sits alone and dreams of Tampa High
Wonders what the other kids are doing then she cries
Then with the California sun she goes down every night
And hits the streets of San Francisco walking for her life.
In her mind she plays a make believe game of her own
She pretends she's window shopping furnishing a home
For a husband who will come along and take her from this life
But for now a John will come along and take her for the night.
All through the day she sits alone and dreams of Tampa High
Wonders what the other kids are doing then she cries
Then with the California sun she goes down every night
And hits the streets of San Francisco walking for her life.
She'll walk the Streets of San Francisco the rest of her life...
