Downtown Brooklyn is the third largest central business district in New York City, United States (following Midtown Manhattan and Lower Manhattan), and is located in the northwestern section of the borough of Brooklyn. The neighborhood is known for its office and residential buildings, such as the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower and the MetroTech Center office complex. Since the rezoning of Downtown Brooklyn in 2004, the area has been undergoing a transformation, with $9 billion of private investment and $300 million in public improvements underway.

History

Early development

This area was originally inhabited by Lenape Native Americans, until the 17th century. Area close to the Wallabout Bay was called Rinnegokonk. At that time the Dutch arrived, gained control of the land, and called it Breuckelen. The waterfront area being sold by Indians to Joris Jansen Rapelje, who used the land for farm purposes. Until 1814, Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights remained sparsely populated. Robert Fulton’s new steam ferry then began to offer an easy commuting option to and from downtown Manhattan. It made Brooklyn Heights Manhattan’s first suburb, and put Downtown Brooklyn on its way to becoming a commercial center, and the heart of the City of Brooklyn.

Ridgewood, Queens

Ridgewood is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It borders the neighborhoods of Maspeth, Middle Village and Glendale, as well as the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bushwick and East Williamsburg. Historically, the neighborhood straddled the Queens-Brooklyn boundary. The neighborhood is part of Queens Community Board 5.

History

Originally, Ridgewood was part of the Dutch settlement Boswijk (Bushwick) and was later incorporated into the village of Breuckelen (now Brooklyn). A legacy of this past stands today; Onderdonk House, which was erected in 1709. The house is the oldest Dutch Colonial stone house in New York City. Also located at the Onderdonk House site is Arbitration Rock, which was a marker for the disputed boundary between Bushwick and Newtown and essentially Brooklyn and Queens.

Although the area was originally farmed and settled by the Dutch during the 18th and 19th centuries, it was the secondary wave of English settlers who named it Ridgewood after the area's green and hilly terrain. The development of public transportation, from horse-drawn cars in the mid-19th century and later trolleys and elevated trains, helped to spur residential and retail development. Most of the housing stock was built between 1905 to 1915 to house German immigrants who worked in the breweries and knitting factories that straddled the Queens-Brooklyn border.

Israel Houghton

Israel Houghton (pronounced, hoh’-tin) (born May 19, 1971) is an American Christian music artist, worship leader and singer-songwriter. He is known for his cross-cultural style of Christian music that fuses elements from gospel, jazz, rock and reggae. Houghton is usually credited as Israel & New Breed. Houghton is a worship leader at Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. "All Around" is on the Digital Praise PC game Guitar Praise.

Production

Houghton produced an album by Michael Gungor called "Bigger Than My Imagination". This album was described as "one of the year's best worship albums" in a 2003 Christianity Today review.

Other performances

Houghton has served as worship leader for the Promise Keepers and Champions for Christ events, as well as the Hillsong Conference 2006–10, and Hillsong Conference Europe 2008–10. Israel currently serves as a worship leader (alongside Cindy Cruse-Ratcliff, Steve Crawford and Da'dra Crawford-Greathouse) at Lakewood Church in Houston, pastored by Joel Osteen.

Orion International

Orion International, previously Orion Bus Industries and Ontario Bus Industries in Canada and Bus Industries of America in the United States, was a bus manufacturer based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and established by the Government of Ontario in 1975. The company had assembly plants in Mississauga for initial assembly, and in Oriskany, New York, for final assembly and testing of vehicles destined for US markets.

Corporate history

Ontario Bus and Truck was established in 1975 by the Government of Ontario under premier Bill Davis to produce buses for the province's transit agencies in the late 1970s. The company became known as Ontario Bus Industries in 1977. Meanwhile, Bus Industries of America was established by Donald Sheardown in 1981 to manufacture buses for the United States market. A plant in Oriskany, New York was built in 1982. When Mike Harris took power as premier in 1995, Ontario Bus Industries (along with Bus Industries of America) were purchased and privatized by Western Star Trucks, and Orion Bus Industries was formed in 1995. Orion was acquired by Daimler Chrysler (now Daimler AG) through their subsidiary Freightliner in July 2000, and became part of the group Daimler Buses North America.
