Greed is a 1924 American silent film, written and directed by Erich von Stroheim and based on the 1899 Frank Norris novel McTeague. It stars Gibson Gowland as Dr. John McTeague, ZaSu Pitts as his wife Trina Sieppe and Jean Hersholt as McTeague's friend and eventual enemy Marcus Schouler. The film tells the story of McTeague, a San Francisco dentist, who marries his best friend Schouler's girlfriend Trina. Shortly after their engagement, Trina wins a lottery prize of $5,000, at that time a substantial sum. Schouler jealously informs the authorities that McTeague had been practicing dentistry without a license, and McTeague and Trina become impoverished. While living in squalor, McTeague becomes a violent alcoholic and Trina becomes greedily obsessed with her winnings, refusing to spend any of them, despite how poor she and her husband have become. Eventually McTeague murders Trina for the money and flees to Death Valley. Schouler catches up with him there for a final confrontation.

Introduction for the Thames Television broadcast of Greed.
This epic movie originally lasted circa 9 hours. Apparently much of the film was destroyed after it had been cut several times,' leaving a 140 minute version that was disowned by the director. The 1999 restored has many scenes reconstructed from surviving still footage and has very beautiful colour tint effects. This probably surpasses whatever tinting the original version may have had, but is definitely worth watching. A very remarkable scene shows two bony arms grasping coins. The arms are unnaturally thin and it is hard to figure out how this effect was achieved.
The last three minutes of Erich von Stroheim's _Greed_, his film adaptation of Frank Norris's novel _McTeague_.
Erich von Stroheim's classic silent film "Greed" (1924) is screened with live musical accompaniment of an original score by the Rats & People Motion Picture Orchestra. Based on Frank Norris' novel "McTeague," "Greed" involves the manifold troubles that ensue after the wife (ZaSu Pitts) of McTeague (Gibson Gowland) wins a lottery prize of $5,000. The film is introduced and discussed by former Chicago Reader film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum, author of the BFI Film Classics volume on "Greed."

Running from the nightmare
In the middle of the road
Hell's no place for sleeping
In a world beyond control
Caught in the headlights
Coming after you
When I woke up this morning
I had to do what I gotta do
Blast me to Heaven for loving you
Blast me to Heaven for loving you
Speed
Give me what I need
Yeah
White lightning
Let's speed, on speed
On wheels, on wheels
Speed
Oh, let it bleed
Yeah
Greased lightning
Let's speed, on speed
On wheels, on wheels
I've seen a train full of pain
On the edge of overload
We're in Heaven, baby
You are gonna implode
I've got these crazy feelings
That I can't explain
I've gotta save you baby
Or I'll die in vain
Blast me to Heaven for loving you
I said blast me to Heaven just for loving you
I said speed
Give me what I need
Yeah
White lightning
Let's speed, on speed
On wheels, on wheels
Speed
Oh, let it bleed
Yeah
Greased lightning
Let's speed, on speed
On wheels, on wheels
Blast me to Heaven for loving you
I said blast me to Heaven for loving you
Now I'm rushing on the run, yeah
I wanna have me some fun
I'll speed
Give me what I need
Oh, set me free
Let's speed
On wheels, on wheels, on wheels
Said speed
Oh, let it bleed
Yeah
White lightning
Let's speed, on speed
On wheels, on wheels
Com'on
I said speed, speed
Give me what I need
I said speed, speed
Give me what I need
