Austin (i/ˈɒstɪn, ˈɔː-/) is the capital of the US state of Texas and the seat of Travis County. Located in Central Texas, Austin is the 11th-most populous city in the United States and the fourth-most populous city in Texas. It is the fastest growing of the largest 50 US cities. Austin is also the second largest state capital in the United States, after Phoenix, Arizona. As of July 1, 2014, Austin had a population of 912,791 (U.S. Census Bureau estimate). The city is the cultural and economic center of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area, which had an estimated population of 1,943,299 as of July 1, 2014.
In the 1830s, pioneers began to settle the area in central Austin along the Colorado River. After Republic of Texas Vice President Mirabeau B. Lamar visited the area during a buffalo-hunting expedition between 1837 and 1838, he proposed that the republic's capital, then located in Houston, be relocated to the area situated on the north bank of the Colorado River near the present-day Congress Avenue Bridge. In 1839, the site was officially chosen as the republic's new capital (the republic's seventh and final location) and was incorporated under the name Waterloo. Shortly thereafter, the name was changed to Austin in honor of Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas" and the republic's first secretary of state.

Chiara Rustici, independent GDPR analyst, presents at Identity Live 2017 in Austin, Texas. In this engaging, zero-PowerPoint keynote, Chiara pulls no punches in explaining how the law works: how Europeans got where they are now in their privacy convictions; how legislative compromise often results in legal vagueness; how a litigation mindset may lead enterprises into poor commercial choices; and how organisations in scope of the GDPR will have to make a business call between implementing the spirit of the law or merely the letter. She gives a memorable breakdown of the key data protection principles and explains their impact on the wider context of the market for "white-label consented data" (data brokers), and audience segmentation and other predictive analytics (profiling) services. AUSTIN, TX— The Texas Constitution demands that the State shall provide for an efficient public education system, yet the definition of an efficient school system has never been litigated before the courts. TAB believes that it is time the courts consider and determine what it actually costs to educate a student in Texas, and more importantly whether that money is being spent efficiently. This is why TAB is joining a school finance lawsuit that seeks to answer that question. “We have decided that the public school system in Texas, at present, is inefficient,” said Bill Hammond, TAB President and CEO. “We want to bring to the court the issue of efficiency. Texas businesses pay for two-thirds of the cost of education and are the ultimate consumer of the product of our Texas public educat...

In this episode of Streets by Vice, we explore Austin’s rich and rather strange cultural history through the lens of one of its most iconic thoroughfares: 6th street. Sixth is significant in many ways; it was the breeding ground for its now renowned music scene, which when talking to experts across the city is at the core of virtually every other industry in Austin and inextricable from the city's identity. 6th street also spans east to west across the city, the urban planning for which has major implications on the city’s diverse demography. Finally, where sixth street runs through downtown, it sits adjacent to its tech epicenter which is currently booming on a national scale. If Austin has always had one foot firmly planted in music, the other has most certainly been in tech—since the 1...

AUSTIN, TEXAS — This Monday marks 50 years since sniper Charles Whitman opened fire from the University of Texas bell tower, killing 14 people and wounding 31 others. As the tower clock ticked towards noon on August 1, 1966, the 25-year-old student and former U.S, Marine Corps sharpshooter began a devastating onslaught that would bring more than 90 minutes of terror to the campus and catch the Austin Police Department completely off-guard. The massacre ended when police officers shot Whitman dead. Police found an arsenal of weapons in a storage chest next to Whitman, including three rifles, three pistols and a sawn-off shotgun. An autopsy revealed the shooter had a brain tumor, which may have impacted his ability to control his emotions. At the time, the massacre was the worst mass shoo...

Keith Norris presenting at the 2nd annual Ancestral Health Symposium 2012 (AHS12). Abstract: The lay public—and, unfortunately, many professionals within the “fitness” and “strength and conditioning” community—consider “health” and “performance” to be synonymous and/or interchangeable terms. This is a disservice both to the lay community, who then assumes, that only an inordinate amount of exercise (both in time and intensity) can elicit superior health, and to the sporting community, who wrongly assumes that superior sporting performance is indicative of superior, underlying health. This knowledge gap is a tremendous impediment to those most at danger of manifesting some variant of the prevalent “diseases of modernity” as this notion discourages them from seeking and undertaking intel...

$7 billion dollar endowment. Board of Regents who are also CEOs and lawyers for top Fortune 500 companies. Downsizing, cutbacks, and the "bottom-line." Welcome to the University of Texas-Austin, University Inc., where big business is muscling in on education, student power, and worker's rights. The film also acts as an unofficial yearbook for 1997-98, detailing: the U.S. 5th Circuit Court's Hopwood decision, which effectively ended affirmative action in Texas; architectural changes in public spaces that micro-manag...

How did the catastrophic sedimentary and tectonic processes associated with the global flood form the world we see? Catastrophic plate tectonics was the theory devised by creationists 150 years ago to explain the geology of continents and ocean basins. Lately, creationists have modeled the ocean-floor upheaval that initiated the flood, subducted the pre-flood ocean floor, and propelled the oceans over the continents. Subduction of the pre-flood ocean floor moved continents into their present positions, and enlarged and deepened ocean basins. Major mountain ranges are the product of plate collisions. Left over heat and global cooling following the flood created the rapid post-flood ice age and Earth's modern climate. This video file is a 60 minute seminar by Steven Austin (http://creationw...

All the rain in beautiful Austin, Texas gave way to a majestic scene at Barton Creek Greenbelt. This is why we love this amazing city!
Mixerr Reviews discusses the recent rainy weather Central Texas has been experiencing the past couple of months. Floods from the recent rain weather have made parks unsafe. The range of rainfall was anywhere from 8 in. to 16 in. at approximate measures. Rain weather continues to occur after the month of April as we speak.
The parts that sound like alvin and the chipmunks are at 600% speed, seemed to be what worked best with how fast the weather was moving... Vid of just the strikes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMpov1ClO9o

Memorial Day Madness. May 25, 2015 was a remarkable day of damaging tornadoes, historic floods and the most stunning mammatus clouds we've ever seen.
When I drove home from Austin to my parents ranch outside of Ft. Worth, Texas in my shorts and sandals I would never have guessed that two days later I would be filming a snow storm! Guess I should have packed a jacket.
SUMMARY AND OBSERVATIONS: In the last two weeks I have stumbled into a maize of logistical roadblocks in pulling our backpacking trip together and at first glace very little emphasis has been put on the specific focus of my action research. In short: One week before the trip the VP apologized to me that she had not submitted the correct form to the school board last April for our overnight trip and that we needed two weeks minimum notice to them in order to “re-apply” for permission; My meeting last Tuesday with the students was scattered with apologies and uncertainty yet we still proceeded with the personal gear check and I included a structure we’ll continue to use called “Moment of Silence” to begin our inner exploration. The group limit has expanded to 15 and there were 18 at the m...

Nestled deep in the heart of Texas, along the Colorado River, Austin is where the ranches of the Texas Hill Country meet the prairies of the coastal plain. The university city attracts the young and the talented and has a distinct bohemian feel. Austinites make a point of Keeping Austin Weird. Explore the quirky shops on South Congress Avenue to encounter uncommon objects and carnivalesque zebras while you shop for vintage clothes, designer shirts or a pair of iconic Texas boots. Visit the city zoo and see the longhorns, long a symbol for Texas. Or, for a modern take on Austin’s cattle history, browse the contemporary Blanton Museum Of Art. Enjoy one of the many outdoor activities in Zilker Park or head to McKinney Falls, and cool off by the streams. As the self-proclaime...
On September 11th 2015 I took the Texas Eagle Amtrak train from LA to Austin. The train passes through the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, taking nearly 33 hours to complete this leg of the journey, before continuing on up to Chicago. This short film comprises a number of clips I took from the train window, mostly in Arizona and Texas. I highly recommended seeing America this way. Though it's not the most comfortable way to travel you'll see things and meet people you rarely would travelling by car or plane. Music is 'Exit Does Not Exist' by Sun Kil Moon, taken from his album of Modest Mouse covers. A record I was listening to a lot at the time. Shot on my iPhone 6 using the Hyperlapse app (for stabilisation), edited in Premiere Pro. Full details of the train rou...
We visited this small tourist town in the hills above Lisbon in April, 2015. It really is a magical place. Almost as if Disney had designed it, but better. It was our first trip to Portugal and we discovered what a wonderful country it is — and a great value, especially compared to the rest of Europe. It has a climate similar to California and our main driver/guide called it the “west coast of Europe.” The California similarity even includes a vibrant surfer scene. We highly recommend Portugal! The music accompaniment in the video was provided by a group from Austin, Texas, called Balmorhea: “We Will Rebuild with Smooth Stones” from the album, “Balmorhea” (2007) “Baleen Morning” from the album, “Rivers Arms (Deluxe Edition)” (2008) For the video techies, I shot in Cinema 4K (4096x2016) u...

The best story, sitting on a shelf, does nothing. Simply "raising awareness" without a strategic plan will accomplish little more. One way Austin is unique is his ability to be creative. He can turn the most boring projects, activities, games, etc. into something fun. He sees every situation as a chance express his feelings or personality. When he is assigned a project in school, he puts way more effort into it than most people would. He uses symbols to represent words or objects, such as using crosses for “Ts” or baseballs for “Os”. He creates acronyms that nobody even thinks of. He uses really cool pictures, hand-drawn or copied from a computer or book. He makes lots of “graffiti-style” letters and pictures.
Austin is also creative on the computer, more than anyone I’ve ever seen. He puts together slideshows that look almost professional. He includes pictures from his favorite music groups, sports teams or players, food, and pretty much anything he thinks of, he makes it fit. He always adds music that fits the pictures. If he has lots of “crazy” pictures, he will have rock or rap music playing in the background. He adds captions to all of the pictures as if he’s going to present it to someone at a business meeting. Some of them are funny, some are informative, and some are just there to let you know who’s in the picture. The transitions and movements are perfect, he never makes a mistake. He can change the pictures to make them look however he wants them to. He makes them look 3-D, blurred, torn, he can even make them look neon. He can do anything he wants to when it comes to making “art” on the computer.
