How To Make White Phosphorus (Trial 1)
How to make white phosphorus - Trial 1 for record. Using a mix of NaPO3, Al + Si02 (cat litter). I successfully synthesize a small amount during & after the reaction but it's clear that my distiller needs a new all steel design.

Making White Phosphorus- done it this time!
The failure recently i had while trying to make P4 got me to further research the method and i was basically overthinking it. it did not need super strong welded retort afterall nor did the brute force attempt at heating seem needed. slow and steady won the race.
Some changes were: the retort obviously, thin walled can with a vertical outlet. using dark Aluminium powder, very finely grinding and well combining of the reagents, flushing the retort with Argon, monitoring the temperature and attempting to control it, using warm water in the receiver.
It worked well. the only thing annoying was the amount of P4 vapour burning up- i could see the flames had the greenish colour of lost product! the camera barely picks it up but just in some frames.
Never the less it did work and is repeatable...

Making White Phosphorus -01 Testing the concept
basically a test run of a procedure i found which is a micro scale run to make White phosphorus. the original publisher cited this equation :
6NaPO3 + 10AI + 3Si02 = 3Na2Si03 + 5Al203 + 3P2
which was first published over a century ago by j.franck.
The publisher cited a 50% yield of 250mg out of the 500mg available P which was reportedly re sublimed to separate the white from the red P.
these two runs were basically a test run to prove the concept for myself and to see how the reaction proceeds before i scale it up with a steel retort . it seems to have worked very well and at a much lower temperature than i thought.

Cleaning the white Phosphorus.
All the white Phosphorus i have made so far was cleaned using similar methods to what is used in industrial process- using dilute dichromate in acidic solutions.
i made a small solution of potassium dichromate with sulfuric acid and added some of this to the molten P4 while stirring the solution. The amount of dichromate solution and time it was immersed was quite arbitrary and i added as much as i thought i would need- a few mls and kept the cleaning going until i though it looked clean enough.
eventually it turned out much cleaner than i started, being a nice pale yellow colour rather than the red i started with.
Next i may do a video on converting some of this to red phosphorus.
maybe. it is becoming wintery here.

There is not much great info on the topic of making white phosphorus. I looked far and found a few things but nothing that appeased my value of education and everything that comes along with making my favorite element.
As an element white phosphorus has many awesome properties! It is the only element in the world that "naturally glows." That is in normal conditions in it's normal state.
Something about that, non-spiritual, without all the god, without all the religion.... it is an element that glows when you turn the lights out. It does this because it wants to burn into something different. And humans are exactly the same. We spend our whole lives trying to be someone different. Different. Phosphorus is very different.... ,
Like sulfurs homicidally evil light bearing twin. It can kill you. If that makes sense. It also causes algae blooms, life, it's lipid soluble and will melt into your skin or fat or anything else oily and burn and dissolve it's way through as you shriek in agony.
From a safety standpoint, you'd be MUCH HEALTHIER squeezing a raw ball of sodium with wet hands. Not that I suggest you do. What I'm saying is P4 is very toxic which is why it's "magical" reaction isn't demonstrated much in science classrooms. We will burn iron in oxygen blow things out of cannons but chemists and this not so safe. Only you can answer that question.
However, I believe low levels (sub 10gm levels) with proper ventilation and a copper sulfate sprayed appropriate gas respirator scrubber on your chrome dome fool is definitely safe. I know my scrubber looks dirty but that's a custom made 3 stage security filter. Charcoal wrapped polyester filters (the preinstalled filters that come with it). Then there's another open and wider area of activated charcoal (fishtank) and copper sulfate sprayed on the inner and outer polyester layer. I attach a 3" rubber gutter piece from Lowes for the big extension from regular masks. If you ever build a custom mask to make white phosphorus with do not fool yourself that you don't need ventilation. You do. Just don't try this at home unless you know what you're doing.
My goal is to test more ways of making white phosphorus. I want to try production and reducing with Al/Mg/C or Al/Mg or Al/C or zinc or anything safe to measure yield. My next trial will be filmed and edited much better. I can narrate much better with a microphone than my gas mask on a camera I returned 1 week ago.
So expect me making more videos of white phosphorus.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_p...
In summation....
Brass to steel does not work. I chose brass simply because I wanted a smaller distiller. I thought it would work better due to more surface area. But my observation is when white p is liberated the molten liquid is very hot, fresh and wants to react with everything. I believe the bit of zinc in brass acts as a "magnet" to attract the phosphorus. So it skins up with a layer of zinc and (or) copper sulfide. Then inside it just sticks almost like tar.
So a change to all steel and tar are the 2 main things I learned in this experiment.
When you create white phosphorus it behaves like tar. Using an inert gas would most likely prevent this "liquid sticky" oxygen exposed material. That's what makes it stick it's the O2.
I must create more and better videos on this element. Where I slowly scale up into a forge built for a retort that has the main pipe, elbow and half the distiller sticking out the door of the forge. With a vent hole above it. This will disperse very hot to almost 3/4 of the whole retort and vaporize distill the P4 straight to water. I will update with more videos so stay tuned! btw sry bout dat body hare.

these two runs were basically a test run to prove the concept for myself and to see how the reaction proceeds before i scale it up with a steel retort . it seems to have worked very well and at a much lower temperature than i thought.
Experimental:
3g of a stochiometric ratio of sodium hexametaphosphate,
silicon dioxide and dark aluminium powder in slight excess were
well dried in an oven and mixed thoroughly in a plastic tub.
Exactly 3g of this mixture was placed in an 18mm Test tube
and this was sealed with a stopper which i had bored with two holes, one for argon to be inlet and one for a bent glass leading into cold water. paper toweling was wrapped around the tube and wet with ice water. the tube was then heated with a butane torch firstly and a MAPP torch for the second attempt.
the second attempt worked better.
I was able to get a little product recovered -i did not weigh it and watched it burn. but this was pretty much a test run with bigger and better attempts to come.
