A record chart is a ranking of recorded music according to popularity during a given period of time. Examples of music charts are the Hit parade, the Billboard Hot 100 or Top 40.
Many different criteria are used in different charts, including sales of records, cassettes and compact discs, the amount of radio airplay, and since the introduction of digital technology, the number of downloads and the amount of streaming activity.
Some charts are specific to a particular musical genre and most to a particular geographical location (although download charts are not easily pinned down in this way). The most common period of time covered by a chart is one week with the chart being printed or broadcast at the end of this time. Summary charts for years and decades are then calculated from their component weekly charts. Component charts have become an increasingly important way to measure the commercial success of individual songs.
The National Syndicate of Phonographic Publishing (French: Syndicat national de l'édition phonographique; SNEP) is the inter-professional organization which protects the interests of the French record industry. SNEP was established in 1922, and has 48 member companies.
SNEP's responsibilities include collecting and distributing royalty payments for broadcast and performance, preventing copyright infringement of its members' works (including music piracy), and sales certification of silver, gold, platinum and diamond records and videos. SNEP also compiles weekly official charts of France's top-selling music, including singles and albums.
Since September 2002, official charts are as follows:

Veuillez rendre l'âme (à qui elle appartient) is the second album by French rock band Noir Désir, released in 1989. The album, produced by Ian Broudie, brought the group widespread attention thanks to the single "Aux sombres héros de l'amer." The album did well both critically and commercially, selling 330,000 copies. The French edition of Rolling Stone magazine named this album the 10th greatest French rock album (out of 100). "Aux sombres héros de l'amer" entered the Top 50 French Singles chart, which worried the group because they claimed the song was not indicative of the rest of the album. They used the fame the song brought them to win over a larger fan base. À l'arrière des taxis – 3:10 Aux sombres héros de l'amer – 2:58 Le fleuve – 3:48 What I Need – 3:23 Apprends à dormir – 3:01...
