"Fables of Faubus" is a song composed by jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus. One of Mingus's most explicitly political works, the song was written as a direct protest against Arkansas governor Orval E. Faubus, who in 1957 sent out the National Guard to prevent the integration of Little Rock Central High School by nine African American teenagers.
The song was first recorded for Mingus's 1959 album, Mingus Ah Um. Columbia refused to allow the lyrics to the song to be included, and so the song was recorded as an instrumental on the album. It was not until October 20, 1960 that the song was recorded with lyrics, for the album Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus, which was released on the more independent Candid label. Due to contractual issues with Columbia, the song could not be released as "Fables of Faubus", and so the Candid version was titled "Original Faubus Fables". The personnel for the Candid recording were Charles Mingus (bass, vocals), Dannie Richmond (drums, vocals), Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone), and Ted Curson (trumpet). The vocals featured a call-and-response between Mingus and Richmond. Critic Don Heckman commented of the unedited "Original Faubus Fables" in a 1962 review that it was "a classic Negro put-down in which satire becomes a deadly rapier-thrust. Faubus emerges in a glare of ridicule as a mock villain whom no-one really takes seriously. This kind of commentary, brimful of feeling, bitingly direct and harshly satiric, appears far too rarely in jazz."
Charles Mingus Jr. (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) was an American jazz double bassist, composer and bandleader. His compositions retained the hot and soulful feel of hard bop, drawing heavily from black gospel music and blues, while sometimes containing elements of Third Stream, free jazz, and classical music. He once cited Duke Ellington and church as his main influences.
Mingus espoused collective improvisation, similar to the old New Orleans jazz parades, paying particular attention to how each band member interacted with the group as a whole. In creating his bands, he looked not only at the skills of the available musicians, but also their personalities. Many musicians passed through his bands and later went on to impressive careers. He recruited talented and sometimes little-known artists, whom he utilized to assemble unconventional instrumental configurations. As a performer, Mingus was a pioneer in double bass technique, widely recognized as one of the instrument's most proficient players.
Orval Eugene Faubus (January 7, 1910 – December 14, 1994) was an American politician who served as 36th Governor of Arkansas from 1955 to 1967. A Democrat, he is best known for his 1957 stand against the desegregation of the Little Rock School District during the Little Rock Crisis, in which he defied a unanimous decision of the U.S. Supreme Court by ordering the Arkansas National Guard to stop black students from attending Little Rock Central High School.
Faubus was born to Sam Faubus (1887–1966) and the former Addie Joslen in the Combs community near Huntsville, the county seat of Madison County in northwestern Arkansas. He was born prematurely and weighed only 4 lb (1.8 kg) at birth. According to his father, "Little Orval was different from most boys. Kids liked to get into mischief, but all he ever did was read books. He never done anything if he couldn't do it perfectly. You'd never find a weed in his row of corn."
Faubus' first political race was in 1936 when he contested a seat in the Arkansas House of Representatives, a race in which he finished second. He was urged to challenge the result but declined, which earned him the gratitude of the Democratic Party. As a result, he was elected circuit clerk and recorder of Madison County, a post he held for two terms.
Fable is a literary genre: a succinct fictional story, in prose or verse, that features animals, mythical creatures, plants, inanimate objects, or forces of nature that are anthropomorphized (given human qualities, such as verbal communication) and that illustrates or leads to an interpretation of a moral lesson (a "moral"), which may at the end be added explicitly as a pithy maxim.
A fable differs from a parable in that the latter excludes animals, plants, inanimate objects, and forces of nature as actors that assume speech or other powers of humankind.
Usage has not always been so clearly distinguished. In the King James Version of the New Testament, "μῦθος" ("mythos") was rendered by the translators as "fable" in the First Epistle to Timothy, the Second Epistle to Timothy, the Epistle to Titus and the First Epistle of Peter.
A person who writes fables is a fabulist.
The fable is one of the most enduring forms of folk literature, spread abroad, modern researchers agree, less by literary anthologies than by oral transmission. Fables can be found in the literature of almost every country.

Mingus Ah Um was the first album Charles Mingus recorded for Columbia Records and released in 1959. Mingus Ah Um is "an extended tribute to ancestors", and Mingus's musical forebears figure largely throughout. "Better Git It In Your Soul" is inspired by gospel singing and preaching of the sort that Mingus would have heard as a child growing up in Watts, while "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" is a reference to saxophonist Lester Young (who had died shortly before the album was recorded). "Boogie Stop Shuffle" is a twelve-bar blues with four themes and a boogie bass backing that passes from stop time to shuffle and back. "Self-Portrait in Three Colors" was originally written for John Cassavetes' first film as director, Shadows, but was never used. "Open Letter to Duke" is a tribute to Duke Ellingt...

October 25th: Project performs Fables of Faubus by Charles Mingus.
Cover of a song originally written and performed by Charles Mingus, the instrumental was performed by a group called Project and is off their album 'Winter In June'. Charles Mingus's version was focused on Faubus an American 'hero' who was actually against black rights in the 1950's... This cover is focused at corruption within world governments and the possibility of a new world order, it's semi-serious, semi-parody... serious in the fact there will be a new world order, parody in the way some people react to it... enjoy.

Abstract: The notion that ideas, products, and innovations spread "virally" through information networks resonates in both popular and scientific accounts of how things become popular. These accounts often focus on the role of others' influence, using models that emphasize structural roles in networks (Gladwell's "mavens, connectors, and salesmen"; Keller and Berry's "influentials") or make analogies to the spread of diseases (threshold and cascade models rooted in epidemiology). In this talk I will argue that such models are deeply flawed because they don't account for the agency of those on the receiving end: ideas are not diseases that you catch but choices that you make. Based on work with Dr. Amit Sharma that looks at how people's choices are affected by social explanations of recomme...
