Pinellas County is a county located in the state of Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 916,542. Its county seat is Clearwater, and its largest city is St. Petersburg.
Pinellas County is included in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Prior to European exploration and settlement the Pinellas peninsula, like all of Tampa Bay, was inhabited by the Tocobaga Indians, who built a town and large temple mound overlooking the bay in what is now Safety Harbor. The modern site is protected and can be visited as part of the County's Philippe Park.
During the early 16th century Spanish explorers discovered and slowly began exploring Florida, including Tampa Bay. In 1528 Panfilo de Narvaez landed in Pinellas, and 10 years later Hernando de Soto is thought to have explored the Tampa Bay Area. By the early 18th century the Tocobaga had been virtually annihilated, having fallen victim to European diseases from which they had no immunity, as well as European conflicts. Later Spanish explorers named the area Punta Piñal (Spanish for "Point of Pines" or "Piney Point"). After trading hands multiple times between the British and the Spanish, Spain finally ceded Florida to the United States in 1821, and in 1823 the U.S. Army established Fort Brooke (later Tampa).
Pinellas is the name of a peninsula located roughly halfway down the west coast of Florida. It forms the western boundary of Tampa Bay and comprises the bulk of Pinellas County. There is a city named Pinellas Park in south Pinellas. The peninsula is bounded on the north by Pasco County, Florida, on the northeast by Hillsborough County, and on the east and south by Tampa Bay. It is bounded on the west by the Intra-Coastal Waterway and Gulf of Mexico. The Pinellas peninsula connects to the south with Manatee County via the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and connects with Hillsborough County on the east via the Courtney Campbell Causeway, the Howard Frankland Bridge, and the Gandy Bridge.
The name derives from "La Punta de Pinal de Jimenez" (Jimenez's Point of Pines,) the name given the entrance to Tampa Bay by Spanish explorers in 1757. The first settlers in the area include Antonio Maximo Hernandez, the McMullen family and Odette Philippe. Maximo Point is the location of Maximo's fishing camp. McMullen's descendents still live in the area. Philippe Park, a Pinellas County Park, and the Philippe Parkway were named for Dr. Philippe. Now highly urbanized, the Peninsula was once renowned for its wildlife, including Black bear, the Florida panther, and many species of birds.

St. Petersburg was incorporated as a town on February 29, 1892 and re-incorporated as a city on June 6, 1903.

Evidently that is the case in Pinellas County, Florida where a recent video showing a self-proclaimed County official responding to a “nuisance call” regarding barbecue smoke is going viral. In the video, an unidentified official speaks with several unidentified men telling them that if he can smell their barbecue smoke on the street it is against local ordinances. The flabbergasted men ask how they are supposed to control wind, to which the unidentified official responds that they could purchase some sort of smoke reduction device or the like, negating the fact that humans have been barbecuing meat outdoors for millennia and unlike cigarette smoke, there is no legitimate reason to ban outdoor cooking....

A quick, short and sweet ride thru downtown. The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. In June 2008, a 6,000 year old spearhead was found at Marshall Street Park.[5] The inhabitants of the area at the time of Spanish exploration were the Tocobaga people, who lived in villages around Tampa Bay. The adaptation of this culture relied on wild resources. Safety Harbor sites have yielded pottery, and artifacts of copper, shell, and stone. The Tocobaga were known for constructing various ceremonial and communal mounds to bury the dead. Most of these mounds were destroyed in the early 1900s due to development. However, one of these burial mounds is still visible in Safety Harbor's Phillippe Park (see photo). Shells found in these mounds were used to pave city streets. In 1528 Spanish expl...
