This discovery by Nobel prize winner Dr. Osama Shimomura known as Green Fluorescent has revolutionized molecular biology. Movement of living molecules generally can be seen but the advent of GFP made the invisible visible. The protein, found in jellyfish helps researchers track substances of all kinds, in real time, and show how they mark cells, maintain them and function in concert with other cells. All 50 Secrets of the Sequence videos have an accompanying classroom-tested lesson that encourages students to further explore the video topics. Each lesson includes background information, state and national science standards, discussion questions and answers, teacher notes and an activity that will ensure a hands-on, "minds-on" experience. http://www.ibiology.org/ibiomagazine/issue-4/martin-chalfie-developing-gfp-as-a-biological-marker.html Chalfie describes the events, both serendipitous and insightful, that led to the discovery of GFP and its development as a marker of gene expression. He also presents a strong argument for the importance of basic research in moving science forward.

Just a couple of Caltech frosh rapping about green fluorescent protein. We have manually added subtitles which you can see by clicking the close caption button.
Live cell imaging has been revolutionized by the discovery of the green fluorescent protein (GFP). This lecture covers the history of GFP, how it folds and becomes fluorescent, how it has been mutated to produce additional colors (blue, cyan, yellow), and the discovery of red fluorescent proteins from corals. It also covers novel photoswitchable and photoactivatible fluorescent proteins, whose color can be changed by light, and new infrared fluorescent proteins.
We met up with punk rock super-group, GFP, consisting of skate legend Tony Alva, Greg Hetson of the Circle Jerks and Bad Religion, Tom Davis of DFL and Amery Smith of Suicidal Tendencies.
perfect little dream the kind that hurts the most
forgot how it feels well almost
no one to blame always the same
open my eyes wake up in flames
it took you to make me realize
it took you to make me realize
it took you to make me realize
it took you to make me see the light
smashed up my sanity
smashed up my integrity
smashed up what i believed in
smashed up what's left of me
smashed up my everything
smashed up all that was true
gonna smash myself to pieces
i don't know what else to do
covered in hope and vaseline
still cannot fix this broken machine
watching the hole it used to be mine
just watching it burn in my steady systematic decline
of the trust i will betray
give it to me i throw it away
after everything i've done i hate myself for what i've become
i tried
i gave up
