John Safran: going rogue with Australian extremists
In 2015, documentary-maker John Safran went along to a far-right rally in his hometown of Melbourne.
He found neo-Nazis sharing a platform with Asian-born Christian fundamentalists, who all spoke out in support of ‘Aussie values’.
Seeing contradictions everywhere, John decided to meet up with some Australian extremists of different stripes.
He drank shots with white supremacists, who offered to make a podcast with him, and ate felafel with Monty Python-quoting ISIS supporters born into Christian families.
The thing all these extremists had in common was an unshakable sense of a certainty, and a belief their time has come.
