Abdullah Sameer – My Journey From Islam

أَلَا يَعْلَمُ مَنْ خَلَقَ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted? (67:14)

Why I left Islam – Core Issues

These are the main issues I found with Islam.  If you want to understand the real problems I found, start here.

 Reflections

Dialogues and discussions I had after leaving Islam.  Some thoughts

Rulings/Fiqh

These are not why I left Islam.  They are reflections after leaving Islam.  Keep in mind that even if I was completely wrong about every single one of these, it would not make me come back to Islam.  As a Secular Humanist, I find these to be troubling issues we find and they seem to show that Allah is not the intelligent supreme being that sent us a beautiful wise religion but rather a 7th century invention with barbaric rules and orders that matched that early era but do not belong in today’s world.

Islam and the legacy of violence

Many people say terrorist attacks are NOT allowed in Islam. But can we really say they have nothing to do with Islam?
This article will discuss that idea.  I am proposing that the Islamic texts lead to a hostile world view.
I’m not saying Islam allows killing people without a trial. I’m not saying that. I am not saying vigilantism is allowed in Islam. Please understand that.

Before you read this and think everything I quoted is out of context. Realize that this is what happens with all religions (especially man-made ones). There will be contradictory statements and interpretations and understandings all over the board.

My argument is that a straightforward reading of the Quran and Sunnah leads to something quite awful for humanity.

The Quran is antagonistic to kuffar. And whoever made this religion was irresponsible by leaving violent texts full of violent statements which has led to so much bloodshed in Allah’s name. We do not see as much of an emphasis on violent warfare in any other religion as we do in Islam. We do not see so much theological inspired terrorism as we do with Islam.

Why did I build two big Islamic sites?

When I created Light Upon Light I wanted to improve the world by sharing Islamic videos for free with others. Over a million downloads later… I ran into a coworker who told me 10 years ago it was none other than my site he watched a video on which initiated him becoming more religious. He was amazed how our paths crossed now and how I left Islam.

When I created Verse By Verse Quran it was the same goal – to provide a resource for those making Quran sites to share the recitation. That project was open source and most of the major Quran sites use my work including Quran.com, Tanzil, and most of the Quran apps on iPhone and Android as well.

When I gave up the site 2 years ago it was getting anywhere from 700 to 2000 downloads per second. Must be more now.

I still am following the same motivation. To leave the world better than I got it.

To help people live better more fulfilling lives. To reduce pain and suffering. We need to help each other as fellow humans. We don’t have anyone else

How Ali Dawah challenged Abdullah Sameer to a debate then ran away

Ali Dawah (of Twerking Hijabi fame) is a person who loves to pick on easy targets, especially women.  He also has videos where he mocks and ridicules the personal stories of ExMuslims who had tough childhoods or difficult situations that led them to leave Islam.  He also challenges people into debates and if they agree he backs out like a coward as is shown here.  This is what happened between Ali Dawah and Abdullah Sameer..

Divorce in Islam

Divorce laws in Islam are the perfect example of a flawed system that leads to volatile and unstable family dynamics. They cause so much pain and suffering in the family. As a Muslim, divorce laws in Islam used to cause me a lot of confusion. I could not understand how a perfect divine being would come up with such strange laws that aren’t well designed. There is terrible and great suffering in Muslim families because of these terribly formulated laws.  Men often regret uttering the words of divorce, and women often feel responsible for “angering their husbands” and causing him to utter divorce.  It causes terrible sadness and mental grief for families who end up in this situation

Sex While Menstruating

In Islam it is forbidden to have sex with your wife while she is menstruating.  This idea existed before Islam and continued into Islam.  The idea that a woman is dirty or impure during menstruation comes from ancient myth and has no basis in reality. The author of the Quran seemed unaware of the purpose of the monthly period. There is no medical reason to avoid period sex and in fact many women are more sexually aroused during this period. If both partners are comfortable, intercourse during menstruation can be wonderful and satisfying.

The Watchmaker Argument For God

One of the arguments for the existence of God is nature itself.  The fact that we have eyes, lungs, brains, organs and a functioning body.  We look in awe and wonder at our bodies and the universe and say “There must be a God”

The Teleological argument (also known as the Watchmaker analogy or sometimes as Intelligent Design) claims that if you would see a watch, you would know there is a designer.  In the same way when you look at nature and most specifically, the complexity of us human beings, you can assume there is a designer because it’s like the watch.
