Venice is a residential, commercial and recreational beachfront neighborhood on the Westside of the city of Los Angeles.
Venice was founded in 1905 as a seaside resort town. It was an independent city until 1926, when it merged with Los Angeles. Today, Venice is known for its canals, beaches, and the circus-like Ocean Front Walk, a two-and-a-half-mile pedestrian-only promenade that features performers, mystics, artists and vendors.
In 1839, a region called La Ballona that included the southern parts of Venice, was granted by the Mexican government to Machados and Talamantes, giving them title to Rancho La Ballona Later this became part of the Port Ballona.
Venice, originally called "Venice of America," was founded by tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney in 1905 as a beach resort town, 14 miles (23Â km) west of Los Angeles. He and his partner Francis Ryan had bought two miles (3.24 km) of oceanfront property south of Santa Monica in 1891. They built a resort town on the north end of the property, called Ocean Park, which was soon annexed to Santa Monica. After Ryan died, Kinney and his new partners continued building south of Navy Street. After the partnership dissolved in 1904, Kinney, who had won the marshy land on the south end of the property in a coin flip with his former partners, began to build a seaside resort like the namesake Italian city took it.
Venice (English /ˈvɛnɪs/ VEN-iss; Italian: Venezia [veˈnɛttsja]) is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture, and its artwork. The city in its entirety is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. In 2009, there were 270,098 people residing in Venice's comune (the population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; of whom around 60,000 live in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the mainland), mostly in the large frazioni (roughly equivalent to "parishes" or "wards" in other countries) of Mestre and Marghera; and 31,000 on other islands in the lagoon). Together with Padua and Treviso, the city is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), with a total population of 2,600,000. PATREVE is only a statistical metropolitan area without any degree of autonomy.
Santa Monica is a beachfront city in western Los Angeles County, California, United States. The city is named after the Christian saint, Monica. Situated on Santa Monica Bay, it is bordered on three sides by the city of Los Angeles – Pacific Palisades to the north, Brentwood on the northeast, Sawtelle on the east, Mar Vista on the southeast, and Venice on the south. Santa Monica is well known for its affluent single-family neighborhoods but also has many neighborhoods consisting primarily of condominiums and apartments. Over two-thirds of Santa Monica's residents are renters. The Census Bureau population for Santa Monica in 2010 was 89,736.
Partly because of its agreeable climate, Santa Monica had become a famed resort town by the early 20th century. The city has experienced a boom since the late 1980s through the revitalization of its downtown core, significant job growth and increased tourism. The Santa Monica Pier remains a popular and iconic destination.
Venice Beach is a fun place with lots of recreational activities, souvenir shops and restaurants. Walked about 2.5 miles to reach Santa Monica Pier.

Fourth in the unintentional "series", after Sofia, Dublin and San Francisco. This time it's Venice Beach in LA that is the focus. Very different from the other 3 in that all the sound and music was recorded on location using just the simple Rode Video Mic plugged straight into the 7D. New version graded with Magic Bullet Looks. More on my blog at www.philipbloom.co.uk. Where I talk about what gear I used to including lenses, filters and support. For more info about me please visit http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2012/11/07/shooting-with-the-ts3-cine/ Michael Sutton (twitter.com/MNS1974) and Boston Rule Camera (www.rule.com) sent over the TS3 camera to Vincent Laforet's office. With Vincent away on business, Justin Hamilton (twitter.com/justinphamilton) and I met up with Mauricio Lizazaburu to shoot some skaters in Venice beach. The TS3 shoots 718fps at 720p. http://ts3cine.com/ We used all Zeiss glass and stuck to two CP2 lenses, the 18mm and 35mm. We used these lenses because we could switch them to PL mounts. The sensor of the TS3 is small so the 18 was as wide as we could go. I processed the raw files in After Effects and cut the video in Premiere CS6. Thanks to all involved including Michael Sutton, Boston Rule, Mauric...
A short edit I made of the wonderfully eclectic people I came across at Venice Beach CA. Much of this was inspired by Philip Bloom's brilliant "Turin Brakes: Chim Chim Che-ree" I just love how silent faces can tell stories. Shot on the Canon 60D with a 30mm f/1.4 Color graded in Apple Color Shot at 60p and conformed to 24p in Cinema tools. Music: That Home by The Cinematic Orchestra
"In our society, men and women are supposed to have equal rights. But women are commonly arrested, fined and humiliated for daring to go topless in public, a freedom men have had for decades. To protest this unconstitutional gender discrimination, GoTopless.org is holding National Go-Topless Day events in cities nationwide. Thousands of women will be baring their chests that day in the name of equal rights, and we hope you'll be there too!"

Documentary Germany/USA 2012 English & German with English subtitles. Directed by Boris Castro & Karla Lemus A group of bicycle aficionados from Hamburg, Sankt Pauli traveled to Los Angeles, to cross the city for 12 days into all cardinal directions. They cruised through the barrios of East L.A., to the beaches of Venice, climbed the Hollywood Hills and discovered a forgotten velodrome in Encino. They worked as volunteers at the Midnight Mission on Skid Row, where 15,000 people live homeless and as a contrast they face the madness of lethal weapons at the L.A. Gun range in downtown. The movie is not just showing Los Angeles from an unknown perspective, it also puts up the question how one can cross this ecological and cultural desert. But the group is not alone, because L.A. shaped a rem...
Venice beach is poppin' like live shrimp dropped on a hot walk
Hucksters, hustlers and hawkers set up their boardwalk shops
Home for all the homeless, hopeless well-heeled and deranged
Still nothin' here seems out of place or strange
There's an old smudge of a beatnik by the bay
Lookin' like a dog who's had his day like a dream he drifts away
He likes to go out on the pier to hear the reedy carousel
It's got a melody that sets you free and says
