Korea boasts 40 royal tombs found across the nation... tombs of kings and queens of many generations of the Joseon Dynasty, which lasted over 500 years from 1392. They all remain intact and are uniquely historic sites amongst royal tombs. Their value is further enhanced by the fact that all the tombs of kings and queens who led the dynasty of an era have been preserved.
Our Hwang Hojun examines The Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's UNESCO World Heritage.
The tombs of the kings and queens of the 500-year-long Joseon Dynasty are not only landmarks of the final resting places of Korea's royalty, but also a source of inspiration and awe for the entire world.
A special exhibition on the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty has been going on since June in the National Palace Museum, displaying excavated artifacts, and even a genuine royal coffin constructed during the Joseon regime.
The exhibition, which will end on the 27th of this month, also serves to educate the viewers how the tombs were formed through the dynasty's renowned historical records of the royal rites.
The construction of a royal tomb progressed along with the state funeral of the royal family member.
It usually took about five to seven months from the death of the king or queen consort to the actual burial.
During that time, the most propitious tomb site would be meticulously selected according to the pungsu-jiri, an ancient geographic divination.
Then would come the grand funeral, with over 2000 palace personnel involved.
The coffin would be placed 3 meters below the surface level, then covered by multiple layers of earth, lime, and a mixture of sticky soil.
Thanks to this intricate and careful process, the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty have remained virtually untouched.
There are 10 criteria that UNESCO uses to assess whether a heritage candidate has outstanding universal value.
To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must meet at least one out of ten selection criteria.
The royal tombs meet three of the criteria... because of their distinctive tradition, their outstanding architecture, and their 600 year-long annual ancestral worship.
"It's unprecedented to have the tombs of an entire dynasty practically untouched and preserved. And it's also important to note that the ancestral rites have been continuing for about six hundred years."
In other words, it's the hardware and the software that makes all forty sites worthy enough to be recognized as a world heritage by the UNESCO.
The special exhibition also gives visitors a bird's-eye-view of the tomb and lets everyone learn about the structure of the tombs without physically being there through Virtual Reality.
Among the 40 royal tombs scattered over the 18 locations in South Korea is Seonjeongneung, the tombs of King Seongjong and his wife Queen Jeonghyeon, and King Jungjong, located in Gangnam.
The visitors are first greeted by Hongsalmun, a red gate with spikes, serving as the entrance to the sacred ground.
It's from here, where the realms of the dead and the living meet.
"The stone-covered path that leads up to the shrine is known as the worship road.
The lower path is called Eodo, or the King's Road, while the higher path is called Sindo, or Spirit Road.
Incense represented the spirit of the dead, so only the incense bearer could walk on the Spirit Road.
That's why even today, visitors are only allowed to walk on the King's Road."
On top of the hill is the burial mound, surrounded by stone-carved tigers, sheep, and military and civil officials guarding the tomb and protecting the deceased from evil spirits.
All of these,... mostly how it was,.. half a millennium ago.

Joseon
The Kingdom of Joseon (Chosŏn'gŭl: 대조선국; hancha: 大朝鮮國, literally "Great Joseon State"; also Chosŏn, Choson, Chosun) was a Korean kingdom founded by Yi Seonggye that lasted for approximately five centuries, from July 1392 to October 1897. It was officially renamed the Korean Empire in October 1897. It was founded following the aftermath of the overthrow of Goryeo in what is today the city of Kaesong. Early on, Korea was retitled and the capital was relocated to modern-day Seoul. The kingdom's northernmost borders were expanded to the natural boundaries at the Yalu and Tumen Rivers through the subjugation of the Jurchens. Joseon was the last dynasty of Korea and its longest-ruling Confucian dynasty.
During its reign, Joseon encouraged the entrenchment of Chinese Confucian ideals and doctrines in Korean society. Neo-Confucianism was installed as the new dynasty's state ideology. Buddhism was accordingly discouraged and occasionally faced persecutions by the dynasty. Joseon consolidated its effective rule over the territory of current Korea and saw the height of classical Korean culture, trade, science, literature, and technology. However, the dynasty was severely weakened during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, when the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–98) and the first and second Manchu invasions of 1636 nearly overran the Korean Peninsula, leading to an increasingly harsh isolationist policy for which the country became known as the "hermit kingdom". After the end of invasions from Manchuria, Joseon experienced a nearly 200-year period of peace.

Jung Il-woo
Jung Il-woo (Hangul: 정일우; born 9 September 1987) is a South Korean actor. He is best known for his roles in the sitcom Unstoppable High Kick (2006), and the television dramas The Return of Iljimae (2009), 49 Days (2011), Flower Boy Ramyun Shop (2011), and The Night Watchman's Journal (2014).
Early life
The son of a former television news anchorman, Jung Il-woo studied Broadcasting at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, then later dropped out and transferred to the Theater and Film department of Hanyang University.
In August 2006, Jung sustained injuries in a serious car accident while riding with childhood friend and fellow actor Lee Min-ho, who was badly injured in the accident.
Career
Jung made his acting debut in 2006 with a minor role in the thriller The World of Silence, but he first rose to fame playing a rebellious teen and motorcycle fanatic with a crush on his teacher in daytime family sitcom Unstoppable High Kick. He then joined the ensemble cast of 2007 romantic comedy film My Love.

Korea boasts 40 royal tombs found across the nation... tombs of kings and queens of many generations of the Joseon Dynasty, which lasted over 500 years from 1392. They all remain intact and are uniquely historic sites amongst royal tombs. Their value is further enhanced by the fact that all the tombs of kings and queens who led the dynasty of an era have been preserved.
Our Hwang Hojun examines The Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's UNESCO World Heritage.
The tombs of the kings and queens of the 500-year-long Joseon Dynasty are not only landmarks of the final resting places of Korea's royalty, but also a source of inspiration and awe for the entire world.
A special exhibition on the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty has been going on since June in the National Palace Museum, displaying excavated artifacts, and even a genuine royal coffin constructed during the Joseon regime.
The exhibition, which will end on the 27th of this month, also serves to educate the viewers how the tombs were formed through the dynasty's renowned historical records of the royal rites.
The construction of a royal tomb progressed along with the state funeral of the royal family member.
It usually took about five to seven months from the death of the king or queen consort to the actual burial.
During that time, the most propitious tomb site would be meticulously selected according to the pungsu-jiri, an ancient geographic divination.
Then would come the grand funeral, with over 2000 palace personnel involved.
The coffin would be placed 3 meters below the surface level, then covered by multiple layers of earth, lime, and a mixture of sticky soil.
Thanks to this intricate and careful process, the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty have remained virtually untouched.
There are 10 criteria that UNESCO uses to assess whether a heritage candidate has outstanding universal value.
To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must meet at least one out of ten selection criteria.
The royal tombs meet three of the criteria... because of their distinctive tradition, their outstanding architecture, and their 600 year-long annual ancestral worship.
"It's unprecedented to have the tombs of an entire dynasty practically untouched and preserved. And it's also important to note that the ancestral rites have been continuing for about six hundred years."
In other words, it's the hardware and the software that makes all forty sites worthy enough to be recognized as a world heritage by the UNESCO.
The special exhibition also gives visitors a bird's-eye-view of the tomb and lets everyone learn about the structure of the tombs without physically being there through Virtual Reality.
Among the 40 royal tombs scattered over the 18 locations in South Korea is Seonjeongneung, the tombs of King Seongjong and his wife Queen Jeonghyeon, and King Jungjong, located in Gangnam.
The visitors are first greeted by Hongsalmun, a red gate with spikes, serving as the entrance to the sacred ground.
It's from here, where the realms of the dead and the living meet.
"The stone-covered path that leads up to the shrine is known as the worship road.
The lower path is called Eodo, or the King's Road, while the higher path is called Sindo, or Spirit Road.
Incense represented the spirit of the dead, so only the incense bearer could walk on the Spirit Road.
That's why even today, visitors are only allowed to walk on the King's Road."
On top of the hill is the burial mound, surrounded by stone-carved tigers, sheep, and military and civil officials guarding the tomb and protecting the deceased from evil spirits.
All of these,... mostly how it was,.. half a millennium ago.

Thirty kilometres south of Seoul is the fortress town of Suwon where at the end of the eighteenth century the Hwaseong Fortress was built, now a World Heritage Sight. South Korea’s most famous monastery is located in the Gaya-San National Park. Today the complex and its ninety buildings have become one of the main Buddhist centres in the East.. Tumuli Park is situated in the centre of Kyong Ju, former capital of the Silla Kingdom and contains twenty three royal tombs that look from the outside like large green hills. A huge number of valuable finds were made here thus the National Museum was created in which more than a hundred and fifty thousand exhibits from prehistoric times right up to the Joseon Dynasty are on display. Jeju island is a unique holiday paradise, a volcanic island with temples, waterfalls, tea plantations and several leisure facilities. But sitting in the heart of the concrete jungle is Changdeokgung Palace, the most well-preserved of the five remaining royal of palaces of Korea's Joseon Dynasty.
Arguably the most beautiful of Seoul's main palaces... our Lee Unshin shows us to Changdeokgung Palace - Korea's UNESCO World Heritage.
In storybooks, ancient palaces would usually be located by a seashore or in an endless green field.
But that's not the case with Changdeokgung Palace, a remarkable structure built centuries ago located in the middle of the now congested heart of Seoul and which was once the home of Korea's royal family.
Amid skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle of urban Seoul, these historic grounds preserve the beauty of traditional Korean architecture, attracting a wide range of visitors both from home and abroad.
"I experienced some tranquility in the very busy part of Seoul actually and I thought 'Wow that's interesting, let's stop by'...and I saw the UNESCO sign so it must be beautiful, that was the reason.
What I think is very beautiful is the very detailed paintings on the roof parts and the layout of the buildings in the nature itself. "
Originally built as a secondary palace after the main Gyeongbokgung Palace, also located in Seoul,... Changdeokgung Palace gently blends into its natural surroundings, thanks to a minimal presence of artificial architectural features, thus preserving the landscape at the foot of Bugaksan Mountain.
That particular virtue is one of the main reasons UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site.
"I live in Busan and this is actually my very first time at Changdeokgung Palace.
I have visited Gyeongbokgung Palace before, and I saw a lot of visitors walking around the castle wearing the Korean traditional clothing, Hanbok .
It looked so graceful and fitting, so I thought I'd do the same and take some pictures while I'm here."
And she's not alone in choosing Hanbok. To wander around the courtyard of Injeongjeon hall, where centuries ago major state affairs such as the coronation of a new king were conducted,... you might think you've traveled back in time to the Joseon era.
The outfit really helps bring visitors closer to this remarkable place. And if nothing else, it makes a great photo opportunity.
Compared to other palaces from the era, Changdeokgung's design and layout are quite unique. Whereas most palaces were rigid and structured, Changdeokgung emphasized harmony with nature. But its most valuable treasure is hidden in the back.
"This is the part that truly differentiates Changdeokgung palace from any other historic site in Korea; the secret garden. Used as a place of leisure by the royal family long ago and nowadays, this secluded peaceful space offers visitors a rendezvous with nature."
At the center of this expansive garden to the north of the palace....is a large pond, called Buyongji. And to the side is a pavilion once used as a library where the king and the government officials studied and discussed politics.
The pavilion has a gate named Eosumun , meaning “The ruler should always put his people first."
As the place where the King contemplated how to rule a nation, it couldn't have a better name.
Changdeokgung Palace is steeped in Korean history. It may be ancient, but the natural beauty conserved in each corner keeps it feeling new and brimming with live.
Representing the modesty of the Joseon-era royals, who respected their people and their surroundings,... Changdeokgung Palace may still have something timeless to teach us today.

Seoul is one of the world's most modern metropolis with its state-of-the-art infrastructure and skyscrapers.
But sitting in the heart of the concrete jungle is Changdeokgung Palace, the most well-preserved of the five remaining royal of palaces of Korea's Joseon Dynasty.
Arguably the most beautiful of Seoul's main palaces... our Lee Unshin shows us to Changdeokgung Palace - Korea's UNESCO World Heritage.
In storybooks, ancient palaces would usually be located by a seashore or in an endless green field.
But that's not the case with Changdeokgung Palace, a remarkable structure built centuries ago located in the middle of the now congested heart of Seoul and which was once the home of Korea's royal family.
Amid skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle of urban Seoul, these historic grounds preserve the beauty of traditional Korean architecture, attracting a wide range of visitors both from home and abroad.
"I experienced some tranquility in the very busy part of Seoul actually and I thought 'Wow that's interesting, let's stop by'...and I saw the UNESCO sign so it must be beautiful, that was the reason.
What I think is very beautiful is the very detailed paintings on the roof parts and the layout of the buildings in the nature itself. "
Originally built as a secondary palace after the main Gyeongbokgung Palace, also located in Seoul,... Changdeokgung Palace gently blends into its natural surroundings, thanks to a minimal presence of artificial architectural features, thus preserving the landscape at the foot of Bugaksan Mountain.
That particular virtue is one of the main reasons UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site.
"I live in Busan and this is actually my very first time at Changdeokgung Palace.
I have visited Gyeongbokgung Palace before, and I saw a lot of visitors walking around the castle wearing the Korean traditional clothing, Hanbok .
It looked so graceful and fitting, so I thought I'd do the same and take some pictures while I'm here."
And she's not alone in choosing Hanbok. To wander around the courtyard of Injeongjeon hall, where centuries ago major state affairs such as the coronation of a new king were conducted,... you might think you've traveled back in time to the Joseon era.
The outfit really helps bring visitors closer to this remarkable place. And if nothing else, it makes a great photo opportunity.
Compared to other palaces from the era, Changdeokgung's design and layout are quite unique. Whereas most palaces were rigid and structured, Changdeokgung emphasized harmony with nature. But its most valuable treasure is hidden in the back.
"This is the part that truly differentiates Changdeokgung palace from any other historic site in Korea; the secret garden. Used as a place of leisure by the royal family long ago and nowadays, this secluded peaceful space offers visitors a rendezvous with nature."
At the center of this expansive garden to the north of the palace....is a large pond, called Buyongji. And to the side is a pavilion once used as a library where the king and the government officials studied and discussed politics.
The pavilion has a gate named Eosumun , meaning “The ruler should always put his people first."
As the place where the King contemplated how to rule a nation, it couldn't have a better name.
Changdeokgung Palace is steeped in Korean history. It may be ancient, but the natural beauty conserved in each corner keeps it feeling new and brimming with live.
Representing the modesty of the Joseon-era royals, who respected their people and their surroundings,... Changdeokgung Palace may still have something timeless to teach us today.

Next time you visit downtown Seoul, Korea, make sure you pay a visit to Cheonggyecheon Stream.
You won’t have to look hard to find it, as this lovely waterway runs through just over 6 miles of Seoul. The stream has quite a history; it existed centuries ago during the Joseon Dynasty, but was concealed by infrastructure in the 1950s. In 2003, as part of Seoul’s ongoing beautification and upgrade efforts, the freeway that concealed the Cheonggyecheon Stream was removed.
Today, no matter what part of Seoul you tour, Cheonggyecheon Stream and the unique, burbling sound the rushing water makes is sure to play a part. The city has created several parks where you can sit and enjoy a picnic next to the stream; additionally, it passes under more than 20 bridges as it moves through the many skyscrapers of modern Seoul. There are also numerous sculptures and other art installations scattered around Cheonggsecheon Stream, making the perfect backdrop for your photographs.
Don’t forget to cross over Gwantonggyo Bridge, a prominent fixture of Cheonggyecheon Stream sightseeing tours. This legendary bridge was constructed during the Joseon Dynasty, but was buried underground for decades as Korea sought to modernize itself. Thanks to a recent restoration, residents and visitors can once again cross this ancient structure.
