Reform was delighted to host the Rt Hon Ben Gummer MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General, to speak at the Reform Annual Conference on the theme of 'Government at your service' on the 9 February 2017.
The Minister spoke on how the government is working to be more responsive and accountable to the public it serves, and announced the launch of the Government Transformation Strategy.
Reform's Annual Conference touched on the themes of integrating technology in the delivery of public services, stories of success within Whitehall, and public financing of the welfare state. We were joined by over 200 members of Reform’s network across the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Ben Gummer
Benedict Michael Gummer (born 19 February 1978) is a British Conservative Party politician and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ipswich.
Early life and education
Gummer is the eldest child of former Conservative Cabinet Minister John Gummer, Baron Deben, and Penelope Jane Gardner. John Gummer was MP for Suffolk Coastal until the 2010 general election, when he moved to the House of Lords. Gummer attended St Saviour's Church of England Primary School in Ealing, west London. Between 1987 and 1991 he was a chorister at St John's College School, Cambridge, where he sang under George Guest and Christopher Robinson. Gummer was a music scholar at Tonbridge School in Kent. Having won the Vellacott Historical Essay Prize he took a starred double first in History at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he was an exhibitioner and scholar.
Business career
After graduating, Gummer became director of ICWL, a small engineering firm handling water-cooled refrigerators, and between 2005 and 2010 was Managing Director of family-owned Sancroft International, an environmental consultancy company set up and led by his father John Gummer; in his five-year tenure the company's size more than doubled.
As of 2012 Sancroft shares are owned by all family members but it is described by the Telegraph as a vehicle for the earnings of Gummer senior. Its managing director is David Cameron’s former adviser on energy and climate change policy and it owns a stake in Corlan Hafren a company linked to the Severn Barrier project. Writing in the Telegraph Christopher Booker expressed concern at the "involvement of some of our most senior politicians in the vast, lucrative and expanding industry of renewable energy" and the "extraordinary picture" it presents "of the state of our public life."

Sir Ben Kingsley explores intimacy and connection amidst cultural differences in his latest film, Isabel Coixet's Learning to Drive.
The Sarah Kernochan-scripted comedy, which had its world premiere at last week's Toronto International Film Festival, is based on Katha Pollitt's 2002 essay in The New Yorker about the friendship she develops with a Filipino driving instructor in the aftermath of a breakup. Along with his Elegy director (Coixet), the film also reunites the Oscar-winning English actor with his co-star in the aforementioned film, Patricia Clarkson.
Learning to Drive follows New York-based literary critic Wendy (Clarkson), a woman who must learn to be independent following the end of a 21-year-marriage with her husband, Ted (Jake Weber), who was caught being unfaithful. With her daughter, Tasha (Grace Gummer), away at college in Vermont, Wendy is left on her own for the first time, forcing her to take up the valuable lesson of learning to drive. Kingsley plays her driving instructor, Darwan, a former university professor from India whose own solitary life is challenged after he weds a stranger (Sarita Choudhury) in an arranged marriage.
In spite of the fact that the two have the most unfortunate first meeting during the opening scene in which Wendy and her husband get into a public dispute, they quickly form a connection that transcends their cultural and social differences. Whilst growing close to Wendy as her guide in taking a new route in her life, Darwan subsequently and surprisingly has his own troubles in communicating with a woman from his own native country, something that Wendy tries to help him with.

The Minister spoke on how the government is working to be more responsive and accountable to the public it serves, and announced the launch of the Government Transformation Strategy. Reform's Annual Conference touched on the themes of integrating technology in the delivery of public services, stories of success within Whitehall, and public financing of the welfare state. The Minister spoke on how the government is working to be more responsive and accountable to the public it serves, and announced the launch of the Government Transformation Strategy.
Reform's Annual Conference touched on the themes of integrating technology in the delivery of public services, stories of success within Whitehall, and public financing of the welfare state. We were joined by over 200 members of Reform’s network across the public, private and voluntary sectors.
