Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object or a system (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawings, business processes, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns). Design has different connotations in different fields (see design disciplines below). In some cases the direct construction of an object (as in pottery, engineering, management, cowboy coding and graphic design) is also considered to be design.
Designing often necessitates considering the aesthetic, functional, economic and sociopolitical dimensions of both the design object and design process. It may involve considerable research, thought, modeling, interactive adjustment, and re-design. Meanwhile, diverse kinds of objects may be designed, including clothing, graphical user interfaces, skyscrapers, corporate identities, business processes and even methods of designing.
Thus "design" may be a substantive referring to a categorical abstraction of a created thing or things (the design of something), or a verb for the process of creation, as is made clear by grammatical context.
Lidar (also written LIDAR, LiDAR or LADAR) is a surveying technology that measures distance by illuminating a target with a laser light. Although thought by some to be an acronym of Light Detection And Ranging, the term lidar was actually created as a portmanteau of "light" and "radar". Lidar is popularly used as a technology to make high-resolution maps, with applications in geodesy, geomatics, archaeology, geography, geology, geomorphology, seismology, forestry, atmospheric physics, airborne laser swath mapping (ALSM) and laser altimetry. What is known as Lidar is sometimes simply referred to as laser scanning or 3D scanning, with terrestrial, airborne and mobile applications.
Lidar originated in the early 1960s, shortly after the invention of the laser, and combined laser-focused imaging with radar's ability to calculate distances by measuring the time for a signal to return. Its first applications came in meteorology, where the National Center for Atmospheric Research used it to measure clouds. The general public became aware of the accuracy and usefulness of lidar systems in 1971 during the Apollo 15 mission, when astronauts used a laser altimeter to map the surface of the moon.
A creative director is a position often found within the graphic design, film, music, fashion, advertising, media or entertainment industries, but may be useful in other creative organizations such as web development and software development firms as well.
A creative director is a vital role in all of the arts and entertainment industries. In another sense, they can be seen as another element in any product development process. The creative director may also assume the roles of an art director, copywriter, or lead designer. The responsibilities of a creative director include leading the communication design, interactive design, and concept forward in any work assigned. For example, this responsibility is often seen in industries related to advertisement. The creative director is known to guide a team of employees with skills and experience related to graphic design, fine arts, motion graphics, and other creative industry fields. Some example works can include visual layout, brainstorming, and copy writing. Before one assumes the role of a creative director, one must have a preset of experience beforehand. Like anyone else, these types of artists start up from the very beginning in fields that can relate to motion graphics, advertisement in television, and/or book (or magazine) publishing.
An executive producer (EP) enables the making of a commercial entertainment product. The EP may be concerned with management accounting and/or with associated legal issues (like copyrights or royalties). An EP generally contributes to the film's budget and may or may not work on set.
In motion pictures, an executive producer oversees the filmmaking with regard to film finance. Executive producers liaise with the line producer and report to production companies and distributors.
In television, an executive producer often supervises the creative content as well as the financial aspects of a production. Some writers (for example Stephen J. Cannell and Tina Fey) have been the creator and also the producer of the same TV show. Other dual roles may include the executive director(s) starring in the show they produce, such as Full Throttle Saloon reality TV star, Jesse James Dupree. Still other shows may have more than one executive producer working on a TV show where there can be one among them who outranks the others. This position is known as the "showrunner," or operational executive producer.

3D city models are no longer just nice-to-have side projects for rich and exotic cities. In this webinar, we will show how the use of 3D has moved beyond its earlier time-consuming and costly manual modeling routine into a practical, semi-automated modeling process. • Learn the entire smart 3D city creation process, and see Esri's new enterprise 3D city information model. • See how to rapidly model smart 3D city models from data attributes. • See the data requirements for creating a smart 3D city model. • Learn how to extract features from existing lidar and imagery if data does not exist. This is the first test of the VirtuRange DIY LIDAR 3D Scanner. A Laser Rangefinder is mounted on two stepper motors. The motors are controlled by an Arduino. Zebedee is a handheld 3D mobile mapping system developed at CSIRO. The primary sensor is a 2D Hokuyo lidar scanner which measures the distances to surfaces in the environment (43200 samples per second). A simple spring mechanism is used to convert the natural motion of the operator into scanning sweeps that result in a 3D field of view. CSIRO's specialized software interprets the raw data to estimate the motion of the scanner and generate a 3D point cloud model of the environment. As seen in the video, the system is capable of large-scale mapping of a wide variety of environments ranging from built to natural scenes. Typically, the time it takes to map an environment is the time it takes to walk through it. For visualization purposes, the point clouds shown in this video contain only 9 p...
The shelter 55/02 by Sixteen*Makers is set in the forest on the north shore of Keilder Water, Northumberland. A product of a collaboration, between architects Sixteen*(Makers) and steel fabricators Stahlbogen. It was completed in 2009, and in 2010 we documented the finished structure with a series of full colour 3D scans. These scans created a 3D model which we used to create this animation. The scan data was also used to test the actual built product against the idealised digital models which were used to create the building. As a result of the intimate relationship between the designers and makers, 55/02 was designed through making, and developed as a series of tactile tests and digital representations rather than a predetermined set of design drawings. In this instance therefore, the ...

Chair for Information Architecture, ETH, and Associate Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University. Computational Cities: Geometrical Modeling for Urban Design and Simulation. This lecture addresses the growing desire to create geometrical models that design better, smarter, and more efficient cities. Cities are inherently very complex to model because they are simultaneously dense and large, spanning from a few to hundreds of square kilometers, and because their underlying structure is influenced by a very large number of hard-to quantify variables including land policies, economic behavior, transportation infrastructure, governmental plans, and population changes. In this talk, I will provide a brief overview of a new approach that blurs the boundary between behavioral modeling ...

Created for the Pittsburgh Penguins 2014-15 season, the piece centers around the concept of transformation, revealing players in a “digital mist” out of the darkness. The graphical visual style references aerospace Heads Up Displays, futuristic interface design, and LiDAR scans, all of this to push the Penguins Brand Identity consisting of energy, drive, and cutting edge. We sought to get away from simply stringing together game highlights by making extensive use of rotoscoping, motion tracking, particles, 3D animation, and complex layer masks. For the rotational player shots we used a 360° dolly track, and a variety of steadycam flybys. Additional stylized game action was simulated using player stand-ins and a custom built lazy-susan. In addition to rotoscoping nearly all of the highli...
