The Madison is a novelty dance that was popular in the late 1950s to mid-1960s.
It was created and first danced in Columbus, Ohio, in 1957. The local popularity of the dance and record in Baltimore, Maryland, came to the attention of the producers of The Buddy Deane Show in 1960. Picked up by dance shows across the country, it became widely popular.
The Madison is a line dance that features a regular back-and-forth pattern interspersed with called steps. Its popularity inspired dance teams and competitions, as well as various recordings, and today it is still sometimes performed as a nostalgic dance. The Madison is featured in the John Waters movie Hairspray, and it continues to be performed in the Broadway musical Hairspray. Both the film and the musical feature one of many songs released during the Madison "craze" in the US.
Ray Bryant recorded "Madison Time" for Columbia Records in 1959. Billboard stated that "The footwork for the Madison dance is carefully and clearly diagrammed for the terpers." The Ray Bryant version was the version featured in the film Hairspray. The other popular version was by Al Brown & The Tunetoppers. Another version was recorded by radio presenter Alan Freeman for Decca Records in 1962.

The single also featured in the soundtrack to the 1988 film Hairspray.
Allmusic awarded the album 3 stars calling it "Ray Bryant's most popular album".

This particular version contains all the original steps that were choreographed back in 1958 to match the calls of DeeJay Eddie Morrison featured on The Madison Time recording by Ray Bryant. This demo was made possible after several years of research, encouragement by Lance Benishek who had an inclination that steps being showcased were not all original patterns, some trips to Baltimore, interviews with former Madison dancers such as Linda Snyder (one of the original "committee" dancers on the Buddy Dean Show.) Most importantly, it was the footage provided by Arlene Kozak (producer of The Buddy Dean Show broadcast out o...

The Madison scene: Odile and Arthur decide to dance. Franz joins them as they perform a dance routine. The music is R&B; or soul music composed for the film by Michel Legrand, but Anna Karina said the actors called it "the Madison dance."This scene influenced the dance scene with Uma Thurman and John Travolta in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. (A further Tarantino connection is in the name of his film production company, A Band Apart.) It also influenced scenes in Hal Hartley's Simple Men and Martin Hynes' The Go-Getter In Roger Michell's Le Week-End the principal characters see the dance scene on a television in their Paris hotel room, and briefly dance along with it. The final scene of the movie is a longer reenactment in a café after one of the characters plays the music on a jukebox.

Speaking the worlds worth of insignificance
Guess I should have left left-alone unsaid
Cause it's been cold
Cold as forever
On this forever afternoon
When a pink drop is already too loud
Charcoal has erased the ceiling
I guess the burn has settled somewhere past the city
Lights they burn in fever yellows
Guess I should have left the questions left unsaid
The medicines a simple answer to rely on
So I fucked up but I'm getting on with my life
It feels like there's a point to everything
The summer holds the nails to kill the questions
