On Broadway may refer to:
George Benson (born March 22, 1943) is an American musician, guitarist and singer-songwriter. He began his professional career at 21 as a jazz guitarist. Benson uses a rest-stroke picking technique similar to that of gypsy jazz players such as Django Reinhardt.
A former child prodigy, Benson first came to prominence in the 1960s, playing soul jazz with Jack McDuff and others. He then launched a successful solo career, alternating between jazz, pop, R&B singing, and scat singing. His album Breezin' was certified triple-platinum, hitting no. 1 on the Billboard album chart in 1976. His concerts were well attended through the 1980s, and he still has a large following. He has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Benson was born and raised in the Hill District in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the age of seven, he first played the ukulele in a corner drug store, for which he was paid a few dollars. At the age of eight, he played guitar in an unlicensed nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights, but the police soon closed the club down. At the age of 10, he recorded his first single record, "She Makes Me Mad", with RCA-Victor in New York, under the name "Little Georgie".

This is the opening sequence of the 1979 film "All That Jazz" starring Roy Schreider as Broadway dancer, director and film director Bob Fosse. It is directed by Fosse and is somewhat of a fantasy depiction of himself during the period when he was editing his film on comic Lenny Bruce " Lenny" while at the same time putting the Broadway show "Chicago" together in rehearsals. What's great about this video is the song sung and played by George Benson who was a jazz guitar master long before he hit it big as a singer...and the dancers themselves. They're still called "gypsies" --never made huge money, had relatively short careers and yet without the quality of Broadway dancers and singers I doubt American theater would ever have had the impact it has had around the globe. Here's a CBS piece ...
It gives me great pleasure to create a clip and post the wondrously talented George Benson's version of the Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil and Leiber & Stoller classic 'On Broadway'. Recorded for his live 1978 LP 'Weekend In LA', the track was to become a Top 10 hit in America, and a Top 25 in Oz. It was my entree to the beautiful spirit and immense talent of Mr Benson. There is nothing the man cannot sing and sing exquisitely. His jazz/pop/r&b;/soul melanges over the years, have contributed to his reputation as being a true superstar and legend. I was only 13 when i first heard this singer, but 'On Broadway' has remained a life long treasure, along with many of his later recordings, which showcase his guitar work, his distinctive sound and style and joyous approach to organic music. Long live Ge...

They say the neon lights are bright
On Broadway
They say there's always magic in the air
But when you're walkin' down that street
And you ain't got enough to eat
The glitter rubs right off and you're nowhere
They say the chicks are somethin' else
On Broadway
But lookin' at them just gives me the blues
'Cause how ya gonna make some time
When all you got is one thin dime
And one thin dime won't even shine your shoes
They say that I won't last too long
On Broadway
I'll catch a Greyhound bus for home they all say
But they're dead wrong, I know they are
'Cause I can play this here guitar
And I won't quit till I'm a star
On Broadway
But they're dead wrong, I know they are
'Cause I can play this here guitar
And I won't quit till I'm a star
On Broadway
On Broadway
I'm gonna make it, yeah
On Broadway
I'll be a big, big man
On Broadway
I'll have my name in lights
On Broadway
Everybody gonna know me
On Broadway
All up and down Broadway
On Broadway
