Harry Haag James (March 15, 1916 – July 5, 1983) was an American musician who is best known as a trumpet playing band leader who led a big band from 1939 to 1946. He broke up his band for a short period in 1947 but shortly after he re-organized and was active again with his band from then until his death in 1983. He was especially known among musicians for his astonishing technical proficiency as well as his superior tone, and was extremely influential on up and coming trumpet players from the late 1930s into the 1940s. He was also an actor in a number of motion pictures that usually featured his bands in some way.
Harry James was born in Albany, Georgia, the son of Myrtle Maybelle (Stewart), an acrobat and horseback rider, and Everett Robert James, a bandleader in a traveling circus, the Haag Circus. According to the Bill Sterns Sports Newsreel broadcast on September 12, 1942, on which James appeared, he was saved from being trampled, at the age of 6, by his mother's horse after performing with the horse. By the age of 10 he was taking trumpet lessons from his father, who placed him on a strict daily practice schedule. Each day, James was given one page to learn from the Arban's book and was not allowed to pursue any other pastime until he had learned that particular page.
The Late Show may refer to:
The Late Late Show, with its title often shortened to The Late Late, is an Irish chat show. It is the world's second longest-running chat show, after the American The Tonight Show. Perceived as the official flagship television programme of Ireland's public service broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), it is regarded as an Irish television institution (even abroad) and is broadcast live across two hours plus in front of a studio audience on Friday nights between September and May at 21.30.
Having maintained the same name and format continuously, The Late Late Show was first broadcast on Friday, 6 July 1962 at 23.20 and in colour from 1976. Originating as temporary summer filler for a niche Saturday night audience (airing at 23.30), it later moved to its current home on Friday night schedules. The format has remained largely the same throughout—dialogue, comic sketches, musical performances, discourse on topical issues. It has influenced attitudes of the populace towards approval or disapproval of its chosen topics, directed social change and helped shape Irish societal norms. It averages 650,000 viewers per episode and has consistently achieved RTÉ's highest ratings.

In each case the "little child" is hardly innocent: in the first, a local auto mechanic's "baby" turns out to be fully developed as a woman and a musician; in the second, a spoiled child star learns kindness; in the third, the family of a lost brat doesn't want him returned. The film's thin plot has James drafted, and joining him is the band's lead vocalist Lon Prentice (Dick Foran), who doesn't believe that Army training and regulations are necessary for anyone of his skill and fame. Shemp Howard steals the film whenever James and the Andrews aren't performing. As Sgt. Snavely, he's effectively teamed with Mary Wickes as his shrewish fiancée, trying desperately to keep her away from the attentions of nightclub comic and USO performer Lancelot Pringle McBiff (Joe E. Lewis). Shemp also has the opportunity to clown onstage with the Andrews Sisters during a musical finale, as they perform Don't Sit Under the Appletree. Arguably, Shemp's best solo feature film credit.

In my opinion, this album from 1957, is the greatest recorded album that Buddy Rich ever did, with someone's band other than his own! And Harry James recorded perhaps his finest playing, at the height of his powers! Wild About Harry! is a studio album by American trumpeter Harry James with The Harry James Orchestra. The album was recorded in May, 1957 and released by Capitol Records (ST 874).[1] After coasting through the mid-1950s, James made a complete reevaluation of where he was heading in his musical career. Count Basie provided the impetus by making a significant comeback with his newly formed "16 Men Swinging" band, and James wanted a band with a decided Basie flavor. I finally got the music and picture in sync. Nobody kicked a big band like Sonny Payne! Sonny drives this Bob Florence chart on "Opus One" like mad. Harry, Corky Corcoran on tenor, John Madrid on trumpet, and Dick Spencer on lead alto all benefit from Sonny's amazing energy. This is from the 1971 English tour.
This is a rare performance from Harry's 1964 tour of Japan. It is the only time I am aware of where Harry did not play his high riding final solo. Harry was enduring tremendous dental discomfort at the time, and was trying to play with his new dental implants. It is obvious from watching this that Harry was struggling. Ray Sims plays the trombone solo.
After several requests, I have posted the opening and closing themes from Harry's London television performance in 1971. The opening video quality is not great, and the closing theme is cut short. Still it IS Harry James...so it is worth watching!
The great Harry James and his orchestra were reunited with Helen Forrest for this 1958 edition of the Patti Page "Big Record" show, which was broadcast live every Wednesday night from what is now the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway. Here are all three of Harry's great numbers, including "Blues For Sale," Helen's vocal on their million-selling wartime hit, "I Don't Want to Walk Without You," and a dance production of "Brazilian Sleighbells".
This version of Ciribiribin from a 1939 air shot, is faster, higher, and superior to the classic original recording. Only Harry James could have played this at this speed!

02 Trumpet Blues 03 Sleepy Lagoon 04 Two O'Clock Jump 05 Jelouse 06 Music workers 07 Cherry 08 sleepy time gal 09 September song 10 Crazy rhythm

Oh, But I Do!
Harry James
Music and Lyrics by Arthur Schwartz and Leo Robin
You think I don't love you,
Oh, but I do!
How can I show that I do?
You think I don't get blue,
Oh, but I do!
Though I get light hearted too.
First Im singing then Im sighing
Then Im flying high above.
You think I don't know why,
Oh, but I do!
I know that it's you I love.
