Damascus (Arabic: دمشق Dimashq IPA: [ˈdiːmaːʃq]) is the capital and the second-largest city of Syria after Aleppo. It is commonly known in Syria as ash-Sham (Arabic: الشام ash-Shām) and nicknamed as the City of Jasmine (Arabic: مدينة الياسمين Madīnat al-Yāsmīn). In addition to being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Damascus is a major cultural and religious center of the Levant. The city has an estimated population of 1,711,000 as of 2009.
Located in southwestern Syria, Damascus is the center of a large metropolitan area of 2.6 million people (2004). Geographically embedded on the eastern foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range 80 kilometres (50 mi) inland from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean on a plateau 680 metres (2,230 ft) above sea-level, Damascus experiences a semi-arid climate because of the rain shadow effect. The Barada River flows through Damascus.
First settled in the second millennium BC, it was chosen as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate from 661 to 750. After the victory of the Abbasid dynasty, the seat of Islamic power was moved to Baghdad. Damascus saw a political decline throughout the Abbasid era, only to regain significant importance in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods. During Ottoman rule, the city decayed while maintaining a certain cultural prestige. Today, it is the seat of the central government and all of the government ministries.
A coffeehouse, coffee shop, or café is an establishment which primarily serves hot coffee, related coffee beverages (e.g., café latte, cappuccino, espresso), tea, and other hot beverages. Some coffeehouses also serve cold beverages such as iced coffee and iced tea. Many cafés also serve some type of food, such as light snacks, muffins, or pastries. Coffeehouses range from owner-operated small businesses to large multinational companies such as Starbucks.
In continental Europe, a café is a traditional type of coffeehouse, but elsewhere the term "café" may also refer to a tea room, "greasy spoon" (a small and inexpensive restaurant, colloquially called a "caff"), transport café, or other casual eating and drinking place. A coffeehouse may share some of the same characteristics of a bar or restaurant, but it is different from a cafeteria. Many coffee houses in the Middle East and in West Asian immigrant districts in the Western world offer shisha (nargile in Greek and Turkish), flavored tobacco smoked through a hookah. Espresso bars are a type of coffeehouse that specializes in serving espresso and espresso-based drinks.

The residents of Damascus are trying valiantly to maintain some sense of normality in their lives, amid the ongoing conflict in their country which has killed many thousands of people, and displaced millions more. When night falls, many Damascus residents lock themselves in their homes. But some venture outside to the city's cafes, bars and clubs, many of which have remained opened despite the war on their doorstep. "Every time we hear the sound of bombing it makes us feel so bad," said Titar Sahinian, a singer in the Roma cafe in the Old City of Damascus. "But as I said before, life is going on and we have to move on," she added. Roma Cafe is located in the heart of the historic Old Town of Damascus, renowned for its nightlife before the war, and in the evening the atmosphere here...
This man, Abu-Shaadi, is a "Hakawati", a Syrian storyteller. He performs here at the Al-Nofaraa Cafe, a well-known narghile (hubble-bubble) place in the Old City of Damascus. Although most tourists visiting Damascus would know this place from it's perfect location behind the Great Mosque, the clientele is, in the main, Damascene. It's a very user-friendly place, so, if you're passing, go in for a soft-drink, a coffee, or, indeed, a narghile. Oh, and say hello to Shaadi, the owner, from me.

My band in Killeen Texas - Damascus Steel - back in 92 - 93. This was our first show being together less than 3 months. We were in the Army back then so all the bad hair cuts. Thanks to Rich Clifton the bass player for sending me a copy of a DVD made from a video tape. That was a fun night, a little embarrassing to watch now but, a fun night none the less. We got better..... A lot better.
