Nico

Nico (born Christa Päffgen; 16 October 1938 – 18 July 1988) was a German singer-songwriter, lyricist, composer, musician, fashion model, and actress who became famous as a Warhol superstar in the 1960s. She is known for her vocals on The Velvet Underground's debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), and her work as a solo artist. She also had roles in several films, including Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls (1966).

Early life

Nico was born Christa Päffgen in Cologne. When she was two years old, she moved with her mother and grandfather to the Spreewald forest outside of Berlin to escape the bombardments of Cologne. Her father Hermann, born into a dynasty of Colognian master brewers, was enlisted as a soldier during World War II and sustained head injuries that caused severe brain damage and ended his life in a psychiatric institution; according to an unproven rumor, he was variously said to have died in a concentration camp, or to have faded away as a result of shell shock.

This is the Nico-Icon documentary as it appears on the DVD which I bought in the Netherlands, where I live. The DVD has English, Dutch, German, Spanish, and Portuguese subtitles. Apart from these, I have also made my own. These subs are basically a transcription of everything that is said (and sung), combined with the English subs of the French and German parts. You can turn them on by selecting "English (United Kingdom)". The other subtitles are mostly the same as they appear on the DVD, although I've made some corrections/additions here and there. Among them are: - The first lines of all languages, except the English one, were missing. - The last lines of all languages had some strange gibberish in them. - The "Striptease" part (12:25) was not translated. I have this film and copied the lines from it. - The "La Dolce Vita" part (18:12) is not translated. - The Terry liquor commercial (18:36) is not translated. - Error on 26:57. Present in all subs, except the Portuguese one. Edith Boulogne supposedly said: "She knew that her daughter was a big baby herself, unable to raise a child". What she actually said: "She knew that her daughter was a big girl, but unable to raise a child." Special thanks to ParadoxapocalypSatan for spotting this. - Error on 35:50. Present in German and Dutch subs. Line was missing and a Dutch word was wrong. Again thanks to ParadoxapocalypSatan. This not-for-profit video was filmed and edited free-of-charge by maggie davis (entirely on an iphone 4) on behalf of Nico, an at-risk animal needing adoption from her foster home in Brooklin, Maine. (Nico had been surrendered to The Ark in Cherryfield, ME.) Many thanks to Carol Ann Cutler (Owner/Director Creature Camp/Brooklin ME and Creature Camp's Tina Pert for their "dog-loving" insights.) (See Notice to Copyright Holders below)*: says The Ark: "Nico is a Spaniel/Beagle mix. We are guessing her to be around 3 years old, so we gave her a birth date of January 2009. She came to us after her owners tried to say that they found her running, and they didn't know who she belonged to. But after MUCH questioning they admitted that she wasn't a stray but their dog, and they just "didn't want her anymore." Nico is a lovely girl who prior to coming to our shelter had only been used to have puppies and had never seen a veterinarian. Now spayed, and up to date on her vaccines, Nico just wants a home where she will be loved unconditionally, if possible a home where she's the only pet though sharing her home with not-a-small-MALE dog might be just fine. She loves to play. No cats please. Nico enjoys going for walks and car rides. She also likes to snuggle up next to you. Since her owners were less than honest with their information we don't know how Nico would be with smaller children. So to err on the safe side, she will need a home without small children." (Call to learn more about this beautiful, deserving dog. 207.266.7673.) *Says maggie davis: Because the nature of my not-for-profit videos on behalf of at-risk animals is not only educational but inspirational, I often use selected love songs/spiritful songs (such as the one on this video--"One" from A Chorus Line) to stir the heart.
