夏の山中の高山寺です。とても素敵な雰囲気でした。
Kozan-ji is an ancient temple said to have been established in the 8th century. It is recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage. The temple was restored in the 12th century by the high priest Myoe. At that time, the residence of a member of the Imperial family was moved here as Sekisui-in, which is designated as a National Treasure. In the spacious precinct of Kozan-ji is the Butto (a pagoda built for the purpose of Buddhist worship), designated as an Important Cultural Property. The precinct also contains the oldest tea field in Japan, which is believed to have been first planted by Myoe. Among the treasures housed here is the Choju-Jinbutsu-giga, a set of four picture scrolls (a form of ancient Japanese scroll painting) dating from around the 10th and 11th centuries. This set of picture scrolls is designated as a National Treasure. The original is currently stored in Tokyo National Museum. On exhibit at Sekisui-in are precise replicas of the original.

A few days ago, I ventured out to the maple valley around Mount Takao (高雄山), to visit three famous temples. The first one I visited was Kōzan-ji (高山寺), a World Heritage site.
You can approach the main Temple buildings of Kōzan-ji from two directions. I choose to enter from the furthest site of the parking lot and bus stop. You have to hike up a steep path and then some even more steeper steps before you reach the Kon-dō (金堂) or “Golden Pavilion”.
From there you can walk towards the Sekisui-in (石水院) and see some of the other noteworthy halls to comprise Kōzan-ji. The first hall in sight is the Gobyo (御廟) or grave side of the founding Abbot Myōe (明恵; 1173–1232). A little further down the mountain path is the Busso Kuseki (仏足石), a stone carved with footprints of Buddha. Next you’ll see the Kaisan-dō (開山堂) or , a life-sized carved wooden statue of Abbot Myōe is enshrined in the hall. Before you reach Sekisui-in you’ll see the Ikōan (茶室-遺香庵), a small picturesque tea house.
Going through a small entrance gate, covered with autumn leaves, brings you to the entrance of the Sekisui-in pavilion. Inside, are several cultural treasures, although some of them are replica’s. Amongst them the famous Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga (鳥獣人物戯画), Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga is credited as being the oldest work of manga in Japan, and is a national treasure. Many Japanese animators believe it is also the origin of Japanese animated movies. It is believed to have been drawn by Toba Sōjō (鳥羽 僧正; 1053–1140), also known as Kakuyū (覚猷). Toba Sōjō was a Japanese astronomer, artist-monk, and the son of Minamoto-no-Takakuni.
The view from the balcony of the Sekisui-in (石水院) is very beautiful and most splendid in the autumn season, when the leaves are vermillion coloured. It is a very peaceful and tranquil setting on this mountain slope far away from the busy city of Kyoto.
As you decent back to the main road and, are a bit hungry from all this climbing and fresh mountain air, you can delight yourself at the nearby restaurants on some local delicacies while listening to the sound of the Kiyotaki River.

This is another Zen Buddhist temple, similar to Kōmyōzen-ji. The 'Temple' in both the aforementioned video's title as well as this one is redundant (that's what the 'ji' means), however for the sake of consistency I've kept them as they are.

鳥獣人物戯画（ちょうじゅうじんぶつぎが）は、京都市右京区の高山寺に伝わる紙本墨画の絵巻物。国宝。鳥獣戯画とも呼ばれる。現在の構成は、甲・乙・丙・丁と呼ばれる全4巻からなる。内容は当時の世相を反映して動物や人物を戯画的に描いたもので、鳴呼絵（おこえ）に始まる戯画の集大成といえる。特にウサギ・カエル・サルなどが擬人化して描かれた甲巻が非常に有名である。一部の場面には現在の漫画に用いられている効果に類似した手法が見られることもあって、「日本最古の漫画」とも称される。

Nanzen-ji Temple at 5:20a.m.~8:15a.m.
The huge gate at the entrance of Nanzenji is called San mon，and it was built in 1628 by Todo Takatora in memory of those who died in the civil War Oska Natsu-no-jin.
Nanzen-Ji also called Zuiryusan is one of the most well－known Rinzai Zen temples in Japan. Emperor Kameyama loved this beautiful place so much that in 1264 he built his detached palace here. Later he became a student of the Zen Master Busshin Daimin Kokushi, and he dedicated the palace as a Zen temple in 1291. A characteristic of the history of this temple is that its abbot was always chosen as the best Rinzai Zen Master in each period. As Nanzenji was above the Go-San SyStem, its influence on Japanese culture Was indeed great.

Kōzan-ji
Kōzan-ji (高山寺), officially Toganōsan Kōsan-ji (栂尾山高山寺), is a Buddhist temple of the Omuro sect of Shingon Buddhism in Umegahata Toganōchō, Ukyō Ward, Kyoto, Japan. Kōzan-ji is also known as Kōsan-ji and Toganō-dera. The temple was founded by the Shingon scholar and monk Myōe (1173 – 1232) and is renowned for its numerous national treasures and important cultural properties. The Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga, a group of ink paintings from the 12th and 13th centuries, are among the most important treasures of Kōzan-ji. The temple celebrates Biyakkōshin, Zenmyōshin and Kasuga Myōjin, as well as the temple's tutelary Shintō deity. In 1994, it was registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto".
History
Togano, located deep in the mountains behind Jingo-ji temple, which are famous for their autumn foliage, is considered an ideal location for mountain asceticism, and there have long been many small temples in this location. In addition to Kosan-ji, there have been other temples in the area, such as Toganoo-ji (度賀尾寺) and Toganoo-bō (都賀尾坊). According to legend, these were said to have been established by the imperial orders of Emperor Kōnin in 774, however, the accuracy of these claims is not clear.

Nanzen-ji Temple at 5:20a.m.~8:15a.m. The huge gate at the entrance of Nanzenji is called San mon，and it was built in 1628 by Todo Takatora in memory of those who died in the civil War Oska Natsu-no-jin. Nanzen-Ji also called Zuiryusan is one of the most well－known Rinzai Zen temples in Japan. Emperor Kameyama loved this beautiful place so much that in 1264 he built his detached palace here. Later he became a student of the Zen Master Busshin Daimin Kokushi, and he dedicated the palace as a Zen temple in 1291. A characteristic of the history of this temple is that its abbot was always chosen as the best Rinzai Zen Master in each period. Kozan-ji is an ancient temple said to have been established in the 8th century. It is recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage. The temple was restored in the 12th century by the high priest Myoe. At that time, the residence of a member of the Imperial family was moved here as Sekisui-in, which is designated as a National Treasure. In the spacious precinct of Kozan-ji is the Butto (a pagoda built for the purpose of Buddhist worship), designated as an Important Cultural Property. The precinct also contains the oldest tea field in Japan, which is believed to have been first planted by Myoe. Among the treasures housed here is the Choju-Jinbutsu-giga, a set of four picture scrolls (a form of ancient Japanese scroll painting) dating from around the 10th and 11th centuries. This set of picture scrolls is designated as a National Treasure. The original is currently stored in Tokyo National Museum. On exhibit at Sekisui-in are precise replicas of the original.

A few days ago, I ventured out to the maple valley around Mount Takao (高雄山), to visit three famous temples. The first one I visited was Kōzan-ji (高山寺), a World Heritage site.
You can approach the main Temple buildings of Kōzan-ji from two directions. I choose to enter from the furthest site of the parking lot and bus stop. You have to hike up a steep path and then some even more steeper steps before you reach the Kon-dō (金堂) or “Golden Pavilion”.
From there you can walk towards the Sekisui-in (石水院) and see some of the other noteworthy halls to comprise Kōzan-ji. The first hall in sight is the Gobyo (御廟) or grave side of the founding Abbot Myōe (明恵; 1173–1232). A little further down the mountain path is the Busso Kuseki (仏足石), a stone carved with footprints of Buddha. Next you’ll see the Kaisan-dō (開山堂) or , a life-sized carved wooden statue of Abbot Myōe is enshrined in the hall. Before you reach Sekisui-in you’ll see the Ikōan (茶室-遺香庵), a small picturesque tea house.
Going through a small entrance gate, covered with autumn leaves, brings you to the entrance of the Sekisui-in pavilion. Inside, are several cultural treasures, although some of them are replica’s. Amongst them the famous Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga (鳥獣人物戯画), Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga is credited as being the oldest work of manga in Japan, and is a national treasure. Many Japanese animators believe it is also the origin of Japanese animated movies. It is believed to have been drawn by Toba Sōjō (鳥羽 僧正; 1053–1140), also known as Kakuyū (覚猷). Toba Sōjō was a Japanese astronomer, artist-monk, and the son of Minamoto-no-Takakuni.
The view from the balcony of the Sekisui-in (石水院) is very beautiful and most splendid in the autumn season, when the leaves are vermillion coloured. It is a very peaceful and tranquil setting on this mountain slope far away from the busy city of Kyoto.
As you decent back to the main road and, are a bit hungry from all this climbing and fresh mountain air, you can delight yourself at the nearby restaurants on some local delicacies while listening to the sound of the Kiyotaki River.

Kinzan Kōzan-ji Temple
This is another Zen Buddhist temple, similar to Kōmyōzen-ji. The 'Temple' in both the aforementioned video's title as well as this one is redundant (that's what the 'ji' means), however for the sake of consistency I've kept them as they are.

Kyoto offers an incredible number of attractions for tourists, and visitors will probably need to plan an itinerary in advance in order to visit as many as possible.
Japan National Tourist Organization's self-guided "Kyoto Walks" pamphlet is available in a ready to print PDF format here[12]. The guide enables first time visitors to tour the city with ease and with minimum fuss by providing bus numbers, names of bus stops and clearly marked walking routes. There are a variety of self-guided walks in different districts to sample Kyoto's various sites. If you see the browser's dialog box popping up, just click on it till the entire PDF document opens.
World Heritage Sites
In 1994, 17 historic sites were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List under the group designation Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. Fourteen of the listed sites are in Kyoto itself, two are in the neighbouring city of Uji and one is in Ōtsu.
Listed by location, the fourteen World Heritage Sites in the city of Kyoto are:
Northern Kyoto: Kinkaku-ji, Ryōan-ji, Ninna-ji, Kōzan-ji, Shimogamo Shrine, Kamigamo Shrine
Central Kyoto: Nijō Castle, Nishi Hongan-ji, Tō-ji
Eastern Kyoto: Kiyomizu-dera, Ginkaku-ji

Imperial Palaces and Villas
Stroll through the regal retreats of the Imperial Palace or one of the two Imperial villas with gardens and teahouses managed by the Imperial Household Agency. These are the Imperial Palace (京都御所 Kyōto-gosho) and Sentō Imperial Palace (仙洞御所 Sentō-gosho) in Central Kyoto, Katsura Imperial Villa (桂離宮 Katsura-rikyū) in Western Kyoto, and Shugakuin Imperial Villa (修学院離宮 Shugaku-in-rikyū) in Northern Kyoto. All four of these sites are open to the public by reservation through the Imperial Household Agency. The gardens located within the precints of each palace and villa are at their most scenic during spring cherry blossom season and autumn where a riot of colors enchant visitors. Each property is still used from time to time for official state functions or for private visits by the current royal family members.
The Imperial Household Agency maintains a quota on the number of visitors to each site per tour. Admission is free. English guides are available at the Imperial Palace; however, tours of the Sento Imperial Palace, Katsura Villa, and Shugakuin Villa are conducted in Japanese only (English pamphlets are given at each destination upon entry and books are available for purchase if you'd like to know more). Overseas visitors can apply online to the Imperial Household Agency in English here [13]. On its website are write ups and videos in English for interested visitors to gauge which ones they would like to visit before making an online application. Please note that advanced applications first become available on the first day of the month, three months in advance of the applicant's preferred touring month. For example, if your preferred date of visit falls in the month of April, you can begin applying on January 1. As these visits are over subscribed by the Japanese and overseas visitors, the Imperial Household Agency has to draw lots to pick the successful applicants. All applicants are notified on the status of their applications whether they are successful or otherwise within a week after closing date. Most applicants to the Imperial Palace are accepted, and early reservation is not usually necessary; however, those planning to visit the Sentō Imperial Palace, or either of the Imperial Villas should apply on the first available day of application as they are highly competitive and entire months of tours often become full within the first few days. Winter tours are typically much less competitive, but be aware that the gardens will not be as beautiful as other times of the year.

Kyoto is a city in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. CultureAlthough ravaged by wars, fires, and earthquakes during its eleven centuries as the imperial capital, Kyoto was spared from much of the destruction of World War II. It was removed from the atomic bomb target list (which it had headed) by the personal intervention of Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, as Stimson wanted to save this cultural center which he knew from his honeymoon and later diplomatic visits.With its 2000 religious places- 1600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, as well as palaces, gardens and architecture intact, it is one of the best preserved cities in Japan. Among the most famous temples in Japan are Kiyomizu-dera, a magnificent wooden temple supported by pillars off the slope of a mountain; Kinkaku-ji, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion; Ginkaku-ji, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion; and Ryōan-ji, famous for its rock garden. The Heian Jingū is a Shinto shrine, built in 1895, celebrating the Imperial family and commemorating the first and last emperors to reside in Kyoto. Three special sites have connections to the imperial family: the Kyoto Gyoen area including the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Sento Imperial Palace, homes of the Emperors of Japan for many centuries; Katsura Imperial Villa, one of the nation's finest architectural treasures; and Shugaku-in Imperial Villa, one of its best Japanese gardens. In addition, the temple of Sennyu-ji houses the tombs of the emperors from Shijō to Kōmei.Other sites in Kyoto include Arashiyama, the Gion and Pontochō geisha quarters, the Philosopher's Walk, and the canals which line some of the older streets.The "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" are listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. These include the Kamo Shrines (Kami and Shimo), Kyō-ō-Gokokuji (Tō-ji), Kiyomizu-dera, Daigo-ji, Ninna-ji, Saihō-ji (Kokedera), Tenryū-ji, Rokuon-ji (Kinkaku-ji), Jishō-ji (Ginkaku-ji), Ryōan-ji, Hongan-ji, Kōzan-ji and the Nijō Castle, primarily built by the Tokugawa shoguns.
