Architecture (Latin architectura, from the Greek ἀρχιτέκτων arkhitekton "architect", from ἀρχι- "chief" and τέκτων "builder") is both the process and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings and other physical structures. Architectural works, in the material form of buildings, are often perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements.
"Architecture" can mean:
All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. T...

For architect Ole Scheeren, the people who live and work inside a building are as much a part of that building as concrete, steel and glass. He asks: Can architecture be about collaboration and storytelling instead of the isolation and hierarchy of a typical skyscraper? Visit five of Scheeren's buildings — from a twisted tower in China to a floating cinema in the ocean in Thailand — and learn the stories behind them. Architectural historian Dr Jonathan Foyle explores some of the best Georgian and Victorian neo-classical civic buildings in the north of England. He visits town halls, concert halls, libraries, schools and galleries in Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester and Todmorden in an unlikely story of rivalry, ambition and power in the service of social responsibility. Neo-classicism harked back to Rome, democratic Athens and the Greek city-state. The regular proportion, geometry and symmetry of classical temple-style architecture suggested order in chaotically-expanding urban environments and served to associate towns regarded as squalid and unruly with the cultured ancient civilisations of antiquity. These were buildings constructed with the aim of elevating the towns in which they stood.

The night begins the same way it always does, with you trying to decide
between the blue shirt or something a bit more casual. A million different
factors all contribute to the one...like which did I wear last time? Which
makes me look less scrawny? Which is gonna make her buckle at the hips
and beg me to take her body? But after the first few drinks, you know
that your gonna look grand in anything...
I hope she takes me home tonight...
I hope she takes me home tonight...
In the New York City subway to drown out the click and clack as the train
hits the track, you practice your lines.
But you know your no Al Pacino, and you worry shes going to see right
through you. So, just take it easy my old son. Lets just breathe and count
to 21. Just be yourself and talk of films and rockin',
cause in a couple of hours, its just gonna be the whiskey thats talkin'...
I hope she takes me home tonight...
I hope she takes me home tonight...
And all that might be why your feeling pretty confident as all your mates
tell you you look like some sauve movie star from the 1940's. And just as
you're about to say 'frankly my dears, I just don't give a damn' she enters
the room and the spotlight falls firmly upon her. The time is right for a
lucid day dream where you win the award for the best in show. But in this
dark, dingy dive as the lights begin to dim, you begin to question just
what it is that she really knows...
I hope she takes me home tonight
I hope she takes me home tonight
You've been talking for a while now and you start to believe that her eyes
are lingering on you for a micro-second more than they did last time. Her
shoulders are bare and you can't resist keepin your eyes off the way that
her hair tumbles down her back as she grabs another pint from the bar.
Upon her return, her left hand comes to rest against your right
and you think that maybe,
maybe,
just maybe,
things are gonna go
a little different
tonight...
I am feeling optimistic...
I am feeling optimistic...
I am feeling optimistic...
I hope she takes me home tonight...
