When we think about swimming in freshwater lakes and ponds, we rarely give a thought about the animals that may lurk within it. But one thing’s for sure, we don’t want to be caught in a situation with a shoal of hungry piranhas. I'm Sam presenting for BillsChannel and today we unravel some of the craziest facts about piranhas.
#10 Replaceable Teeth
You’ve no idea how similar piranhas are when compared to sharks. With teeth that are often compared to the sharpness of blades, Piranhas too are capable of replacing their teeth regularly throughout their lifespan.
#9 Insanely Strong Bite
Certain species of piranhas possess some of the strongest bite strength amongst any animal in history. The black piranha is capable of exerting a bite force of up to 320 Newtons or around 30 times its body weight on its unsuspecting victims. That's a more powerful bite relative to weight than any animal in history... even the T-Rex! Looks like these creatures are truly capable of “biting more than they can chew”.
#8 Humans Don’t Form a Part of Their Diet
Contrary to movies and folklore, piranhas don’t go around eating humans, much less a live one. Unless starved, piranhas would rarely take a bite out of a human without being provoked.
#7 Cannibalism Exists in These Savages
The main diet of piranhas usually consists of other fishes, worms and insects. However, if starved and left with no other choice, certain species of piranhas may resort to eating their fellow shoal mates regardless of whether they are living or not.
#6 Vegetarian Piranhas
Thankfully, not all piranhas are blood thirsty savages, with a small number of species like the Tometes Camunani that survives on riverweeds only. Another freshwater fish, the Pacu, which are related to the Piranha also eat nuts that fall from trees with their humanoid teeth.
#5 Piranhas Are Capable of Barking
Well at least that was what they sounded like they were trying to do when researches stuck a probe in their living spaces. The red-bellied piranha, one of the deadliest species of piranhas, is even capable of producing three distinct barks through its swim bladder that are associated with aggressive behaviours.
#4 Piranhas Soup
In an odd twist of fate, some piranhas are caught by humans and made into soups and other delicacies by grilling and frying them. In fact, the piranha soup is extremely popular in the Pantanal region of Brazil where it is served on a banana leaf, with a nice tomato and lime garnish.
#3 Only 3 out of 60 Species of Piranhas Are Dangerous to Humans
More specifically, the black shoulder, red-bellied and San Francisco Piranhas are considered dangerous to us because of their voracious appetite and craving for fresh meat. Therefore most of them are pretty much harmless, unless you're fisherman trying to catch some catfish, in which case they're merely a pain as they always seal bait. Thats why they fish for cats at night in the amazon.
#2 They Travel in Shoals for Safety
Who would think that a group of meat eating fishes would travel in groups just for their safety? Truth is, these creatures are more prey than predators, with animals such as river dolphins and crocodiles feeding on them regularly. As such, travelling in a group would allow the piranhas to protect the older fishes who tend to stay towards the centre of the shoal.
#1 A Shoal of Piranhas Could Devour a Cow in Minutes
Stemming first from former American President Theodore Roosevelt’s tale of how a group of piranhas devoured the carcass of a cow, it has since been proven that a group of 500 piranhas could easily strip the flesh off a cow within five minutes. In fact, if the piranhas were starved beforehand, they could enter a feeding frenzy and easily bite anything within range – including each other.

By now I think just about everybody in the world knows about Piranhas and how dangerous they are.
From Movies, to documentaries, and gazillions of youtube videos, there is no lack of evidence supporting the deadly reality of this fish. They can attack in a pack of 100 and are also known to eat children.
That’s why it was kind of scary to hear Steve Townson, from Amazon-Angler, tell me climate change and warmer river water may be causing them to grow bigger.
This was just something I had to see for myself.
It wasn’t easy, but after overcoming a few obstacles, we managed to get to the area where Steve said he was noticing bigger Piranhas… and no sooner did we get there than Steve had a Piranha on his line.
Steve: Hey look at that… You think you have seen big Piranha, well take a look at this puppy… That is absolutely huge…. Is that a black Piranha… yes that is a black piranha and he weighs 7.5 pounds.
Now as a general rule, Black Piranhas are always larger than the more popular red belly Piranhas. The world record for a black piranha is just over 8 lbs or almost 4 kilos, but normally, anglers catch them in the 3 to 4 pound range which is about 1 and half to two kilos.
To give you an idea how big this piranha is , I am going to compare it to a regular size Red Belly
With a biting power 3 times that of a crocodile, this not something you want getting any bigger… but over the next hour Steve caught 4 more piranha’s all over 7 lbs!

So it is 9 AM and we're back on the water and it is a beautiful morning to be out. We're going to try and spot some wildlife. Oh!
So Sam? Are you hoping to spot anything in particular today? Yes, I would like to see that bird we saw this morning for breakfast. We didn't film it but it was a beautiful brown bird with like huge wings and it looked a little bit like an eagle.
We found something.
So we went out for a little excursion this morning and we've been traveling upstream and now we've arrived at a prime location to fish piranhas. So Sam, how are you feeling about that? I'm feeling good because you're going to stick your fingers in and they're going to bite them, right? What? Just kidding we actually have fishing rods.
So first up we are emptying our boat because there is a little too much water in it. And we wouldn't want to sink when there is piranhas in the water now would we Sam? No, we would not.
So over there is the bait. We're just getting that ready to put on the hook.
Bait for the piranhas. And there is the bait. I don't want to use my fingers. Hahahaha.
This is the way how to hook the bait. You make it a double hook. A double hook. Just like that. Throw it in the water.
So we are going to use this small fish. Ah! To feed the piranha. Oh my gosh.
Almost, almost.
It was there.
I heard the bite.
You want to try and splash the water. That is the way how to attract the piranha. Splash the water to call the piraña. Come over!
Okay, so I'm going to try my hand at fishing for piranha. I've got the bait here. Right here. Let's do this. I'm scared. So lure it over. Lure it over Audrey. Jerk it up and down. Splash it around.
Up and down, splash it around. Do you feel anything? No. Not yet? We're still trying to get them to come over.
Is that a piraña? No it is a sardine. Freshwater sardine. It ate it.
False alarm. False alarm.
I feel a tug. No, they just ate half of the fish. They ate half of the fish. Yeah, oh no. Hahahaha.
Look at that. Our first piranha.
Jeez, they're ugly.
I would not want to be bitten by one of those. What do you think Audrey? That is scary. It looks like something out of a horror movie. Look at those things. Sharp as heck.
We got one. Andres got one. Let's see it? Look at it. That is a big one. A big one. That is way bigger than the other one. Wow. Oh, maybe I have one too. Oh no. Never mind.
I haven't had any luck so far so we're letting Sam try his hand once again.
Oh, another! Piraña number three.
This one can reach like this size. Like big. Holy crap. That is huge. How many years? How many years would it take to get that big? In five years.
Oh. Oh. It's a branch. Oh yeah. Expert branch fisher over here. Expert branch fisher. No piranhas so far just branches.
You got one! You got one! Show it to us. I finally caught one. It was a big one too. Film it. Oh there it is.
It was probably my 20th attempt and I was not going to give up until I got one. There it is. There it is. Congratulations. There is dinner. There is dinner.
You never gave up and finally got one. Now we are going to see its teeth.
So mission accomplished. Time to head back for lunch but we're going to be having these for dinner. So that is pretty exciting.
It is wet! It's wet!
Okay, so this morning we went fishing for piranha and now we are having it for dinner.
And that is the big one I caught. Yeah, Sam got the big one. The grande.
There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of meat there. No, there is not.
As a tip if you're going to try your hand at fishing for piraña in the Amazon be sure to be patient because it took us nearly 20 attempts to finally make our first catch. The piranha are really skilled at just biting the bait and not getting hooked.

Piranhas
Piranhas is a historic municipality near the western limit of the State of Alagoas, in the Northeast Region of Brazil.
Located on the banks of the São Francisco River, on the border with the State of Sergipe, Piranhas was founded in 1891 and originally named Floriano Peixoto (in honor of the Army General who was one of the founders of the Republic and was later elected President).
It was also known as Porto de Piranhas, because fishermen caught piranhas (a carnivorous predator fish) there.
History
The town was founded in 1891.
Its architecture is typical of late Empire, Northeast style of constructions.
In the 30s, Piranhas was attacked several times by the cangaceiros, bands of marauders and bandits, commanded by the infamous Lampião, who frequently hid from the police in the rocky outcrops near the city.
Transport
Railway
Historically Piranhas was the upstream limit of navigation on the lower São Francisco River. Immediately upstream of Piranhas there were impassable rapids, and 60 km further upstream was the major falls at Paulo Afonso. Above those falls the São Francisco became navigable again for over 1500 km.

River Monsters
River Monsters is a British and American wildlife documentary television programme produced for Animal Planet by Icon Films of Bristol, United Kingdom. Hosted by extreme angler and biologist Jeremy Wade who travels around the globe in search of the most fearsome freshwater killers. Looking for clues, eyewitnesses and stories about people who were dragged underwater by these vicious predators, he tries to catch the biggest specimens and then release them back to the wild. His aim is to save these rare creatures from extinction and to help people understand the truth behind the horrific attacks on humans.
River Monsters became one of the most watched, most successful programmes in Animal Planet's history, and one of the most viewed series on Discovery Channel too. We're going to try and spot some wildlife. Oh! So Sam? Are you hoping to spot anything in particular today? Yes, I would like to see that bird we saw this morning for breakfast. We didn't film it but it was a beautiful brown bird with like huge wings and it looked a little bit like an eagle. We found something. So we went out for a little excursion this morning and we've been traveling upstream and now we've arrived at a prime location to fish piranhas. So Sam, how are you feeling about that? I'm feeling good because you're going to stick your fingers in and they're going to bite them, right? What? Just kidding we actually have fishing rods. So first up we are emptying our boat because there is a little too much water in it. And we wouldn't want to sink when there is piranhas in the water now would we Sam? No, we would not. So over there is the bait. We're just getting that ready to put on the hook. Bait for the piranhas. And there is the bait. I don't want to use my fingers. Hahahaha. This is the way how to hook the bait. You make it a double hook. A double hook. Just like that. Throw it in the water. So we are going to use this small fish. Ah! To feed the piranha. Oh my gosh. Almost, almost. It was there. I heard the bite. You want to try and splash the water. That is the way how to attract the piranha. Splash the water to call the piraña. Come over! Okay, so I'm going to try my hand at fishing for piranha. I've got the bait here. Right here. Let's do this. I'm scared. So lure it over. Lure it over Audrey. Jerk it up and down. Splash it around. Up and down, splash it around. Do you feel anything? No. Not yet? We're still trying to get them to come over. Is that a piraña? No it is a sardine. Freshwater sardine. It ate it. False alarm. False alarm. I feel a tug. No, they just ate half of the fish. They ate half of the fish. Yeah, oh no. Hahahaha. Look at that. Our first piranha. Jeez, they're ugly. I would not want to be bitten by one of those. What do you think Audrey? That is scary. It looks like something out of a horror movie. Look at those things. Sharp as heck. We got one. Andres got one. Let's see it? Look at it. That is a big one. A big one. That is way bigger than the other one. Wow. Oh, maybe I have one too. Oh no. Never mind. I haven't had any luck so far so we're letting Sam try his hand once again. Oh, another! Piraña number three. This one can reach like this size. Like big. Holy crap. That is huge. How many years? How many years would it take to get that big? In five years. Oh. Oh. It's a branch. Oh yeah. Expert branch fisher over here. Expert branch fisher. No piranhas so far just branches. You got one! You got one! Show it to us. I finally caught one. It was a big one too. Film it. Oh there it is. It was probably my 20th attempt and I was not going to give up until I got one. There it is. There it is. Congratulations. There is dinner. There is dinner. You never gave up and finally got one. Now we are going to see its teeth. So mission accomplished. Time to head back for lunch but we're going to be having these for dinner. So that is pretty exciting. It is wet! It's wet! Okay, so this morning we went fishing for piranha and now we are having it for dinner. And that is the big one I caught. Yeah, Sam got the big one. The grande. There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of meat there. No, there is not. As a tip if you're going to try your hand at fishing for piraña in the Amazon be sure to be patient because it took us nearly 20 attempts to finally make our first catch. By now I think just about everybody in the world knows about Piranhas and how dangerous they are. From Movies, to documentaries, and gazillions of youtube videos, there is no lack of evidence supporting the deadly reality of this fish. They can attack in a pack of 100 and are also known to eat children. That’s why it was kind of scary to hear Steve Townson, from Amazon-Angler, tell me climate change and warmer river water may be causing them to grow bigger. This was just something I had to see for myself. You’ve no idea how similar piranhas are when compared to sharks. With teeth that are often compared to the sharpness of blades, Piranhas too are capable of replacing their teeth regularly throughout their lifespan.
#9 Insanely Strong Bite
Certain species of piranhas possess some of the strongest bite strength amongst any animal in history. The black piranha is capable of exerting a bite force of up to 320 Newtons or around 30 times its body weight on its unsuspecting victims. That's a more powerful bite relative to weight than any animal in history... even the T-Rex! Looks like these creatures are truly capable of “biting more than they can chew”.
#8 Humans Don’t Form a Part of Their Diet
Contrary to movies and folklore, piranhas don’t go around eating humans, much less a live one. Unless starved, piranhas would rarely take a bite out of a human without being provoked.
#7 Cannibalism Exists in These Savages
The main diet of piranhas usually consists of other fishes, worms and insects. However, if starved and left with no other choice, certain species of piranhas may resort to eating their fellow shoal mates regardless of whether they are living or not.
#6 Vegetarian Piranhas
Thankfully, not all piranhas are blood thirsty savages, with a small number of species like the Tometes Camunani that survives on riverweeds only. Another freshwater fish, the Pacu, which are related to the Piranha also eat nuts that fall from trees with their humanoid teeth.
#5 Piranhas Are Capable of Barking
Well at least that was what they sounded like they were trying to do when researches stuck a probe in their living spaces. The red-bellied piranha, one of the deadliest species of piranhas, is even capable of producing three distinct barks through its swim bladder that are associated with aggressive behaviours.
#4 Piranhas Soup
In an odd twist of fate, some piranhas are caught by humans and made into soups and other delicacies by grilling and frying them. In fact, the piranha soup is extremely popular in the Pantanal region of Brazil where it is served on a banana leaf, with a nice tomato and lime garnish.
#3 Only 3 out of 60 Species of Piranhas Are Dangerous to Humans
More specifically, the black shoulder, red-bellied and San Francisco Piranhas are considered dangerous to us because of their voracious appetite and craving for fresh meat. Therefore most of them are pretty much harmless, unless you're fisherman trying to catch some catfish, in which case they're merely a pain as they always seal bait. Thats why they fish for cats at night in the amazon.
#2 They Travel in Shoals for Safety
Who would think that a group of meat eating fishes would travel in groups just for their safety? Truth is, these creatures are more prey than predators, with animals such as river dolphins and crocodiles feeding on them regularly. As such, travelling in a group would allow the piranhas to protect the older fishes who tend to stay towards the centre of the shoal.

Stemming first from former American President Theodore Roosevelt’s tale of how a group of piranhas devoured the carcass of a cow, it has since been proven that a group of 500 piranhas could easily strip the flesh off a cow within five minutes. In fact, if the piranhas were starved beforehand, they could enter a feeding frenzy and easily bite anything within range – including each other.

Steve: Hey look at that… You think you have seen big Piranha, well take a look at this puppy… That is absolutely huge…. Is that a black Piranha… yes that is a black piranha and he weighs 7.5 pounds.
Now as a general rule, Black Piranhas are always larger than the more popular red belly Piranhas. The world record for a black piranha is just over 8 lbs or almost 4 kilos, but normally, anglers catch them in the 3 to 4 pound range which is about 1 and half to two kilos.
To give you an idea how big this piranha is , I am going to compare it to a regular size Red Belly
With a biting power 3 times that of a crocodile, this not something you want getting any bigger… but over the next hour Steve caught 4 more piranha’s all over 7 lbs!

So it is 9 AM and we're back on the water and it is a beautiful morning to be out. We're going to try and spot some wildlife. Oh!
So Sam? Are you hoping to spot anything in particular today? Yes, I would like to see that bird we saw this morning for breakfast. We didn't film it but it was a beautiful brown bird with like huge wings and it looked a little bit like an eagle.
We found something.
So we went out for a little excursion this morning and we've been traveling upstream and now we've arrived at a prime location to fish piranhas. So Sam, how are you feeling about that? I'm feeling good because you're going to stick your fingers in and they're going to bite them, right? What? Just kidding we actually have fishing rods.
So first up we are emptying our boat because there is a little too much water in it. And we wouldn't want to sink when there is piranhas in the water now would we Sam? No, we would not.
So over there is the bait. We're just getting that ready to put on the hook.
Bait for the piranhas. And there is the bait. I don't want to use my fingers. Hahahaha.
This is the way how to hook the bait. You make it a double hook. A double hook. Just like that. Throw it in the water.
So we are going to use this small fish. Ah! To feed the piranha. Oh my gosh.
Almost, almost.
It was there.
I heard the bite.
You want to try and splash the water. That is the way how to attract the piranha. Splash the water to call the piraña. Come over!
Okay, so I'm going to try my hand at fishing for piranha. I've got the bait here. Right here. Let's do this. I'm scared. So lure it over. Lure it over Audrey. Jerk it up and down. Splash it around.
Up and down, splash it around. Do you feel anything? No. Not yet? We're still trying to get them to come over.
Is that a piraña? No it is a sardine. Freshwater sardine. It ate it.
False alarm. False alarm.
I feel a tug. No, they just ate half of the fish. They ate half of the fish. Yeah, oh no. Hahahaha.
Look at that. Our first piranha.
Jeez, they're ugly.
I would not want to be bitten by one of those. What do you think Audrey? That is scary. It looks like something out of a horror movie. Look at those things. Sharp as heck.
We got one. Andres got one. Let's see it? Look at it. That is a big one. A big one. That is way bigger than the other one. Wow. Oh, maybe I have one too. Oh no. Never mind.
I haven't had any luck so far so we're letting Sam try his hand once again.
Oh, another! Piraña number three.
This one can reach like this size. Like big. Holy crap. That is huge. How many years? How many years would it take to get that big? In five years.
Oh. Oh. It's a branch. Oh yeah. Expert branch fisher over here. Expert branch fisher. No piranhas so far just branches.
You got one! You got one! Show it to us. I finally caught one. It was a big one too. Film it. Oh there it is.
It was probably my 20th attempt and I was not going to give up until I got one. There it is. There it is. Congratulations. There is dinner. There is dinner.
You never gave up and finally got one. Now we are going to see its teeth.
So mission accomplished. Time to head back for lunch but we're going to be having these for dinner. So that is pretty exciting.
It is wet! It's wet!
Okay, so this morning we went fishing for piranha and now we are having it for dinner.
And that is the big one I caught. Yeah, Sam got the big one. The grande.
There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of meat there. No, there is not.
As a tip if you're going to try your hand at fishing for piraña in the Amazon be sure to be patient because it took us nearly 20 attempts to finally make our first catch. The piranha are really skilled at just biting the bait and not getting hooked.

Pygocentrus nattereri red-bellied red piranha
The red-bellied piranha or red piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) is a species of piranha native to South America, found in the Amazon River Basin, coastal rivers of northeastern Brazil, and the basins of the Paraguay and Paraná. They are omnivorous foragers and feed on insects, worms, crustaceans and fish. They are not a migratory species, but do travel to seek out conditions conducive to breeding and spawning during periods of increased rainfall. Amazon River Cruise: Adventure Travel in Peru Video Transcript:
Hello from the shores of the Amazon river. This is a pretty cool place to be wouldn't you say? Yeah, this is a bucketlist item for us definitely. So we are currently cruising down the Amazon with Rainforest Cruises. We're going to be spending four days and three nights aboard the Delfin number one. Yeah, and it is a very luxurious boat. We're doing this in style. It is awesome. We're going to give you a tour of the boat and we'd also like to show you some of the really cool excursions that we're going to be doing over these next three to four days. So come along. Let's go.
This feels like yet another episode of MTV cribs. But come on in. We are staying in the Anaconda suite. Pretty cool. No anaconda sighted so far. But basically this is our little terrace. We have a nice balcony with views of the Amazon river. And yeah we can just hang out here, have drinks, read a book, it is pretty cool.
Alright, and let's check out the inside of our room.
Our first afternoon aboard our Amazon Cruise was pretty relaxed and we got to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets ever.
The following morning called for an early start with everyone ready to board the skiff by 6:30 a.m. Our guide had lured us with the promise of wildlife and a delicious breakfast aboard the boat, and thankfully he delivered on both of those.
That morning we saw countless blue and yellow macaws, a school of pink dolphins playfully breaking through the water, and sloths slowly going about their day.
As for breakfast, the captain took us to a secluded lagoon covered in a blanket of water lettuce, where we parked the boat and enjoyed a three course breakfast featuring: fruit-kebabs, chicken and avocado salad, and hot sandwiches. It was the perfect way to start off our day on the Amazon.
So we are back in the jungle. This afternoon we are doing a jungle walking excursion. And we're also going to be doing a canopy walk across a series of suspension bridges. So we're just on the trail. We've got our rubber boots back on.
Meal times were another highlight of our cruise aboard the Delfin I. They had an international menu sure to satisfy every palate, but they also made sure to use Amazonian ingredients and feature Peruvian-inspired dishes at every meal. Every meal was a delight to our foodie taste buds.
So good morning. It is another beautiful day on the Amazon and we've just finished breakfast and we're now heading out on our first excursion of the day. We will be going piranha fishing and if you watched our previous video we already did that at the treehouse; however, I was very unsuccessful while Sam caught the biggest piraña yet.
So we officially ran out of bait for our piranha fishing so we kind of gave up on that activity. But right now we're trying kayaking down one of the smaller tributaries of the Amazon.
I'm the captain of this ship. And that is a scary thought. Cruising down the Amazon.
So we are about to reach the point where the Ucayali River and the Marañón River meet together to form the Amazon. So that moment calls for a toast.
So here is a toast to travels in the Amazon. Salut!
Yeah, so we're visiting this cool kind of little local village. It is called Sanfrancisco. San Francisco. And it has only been around since 1974 so it is just over 40 years old.
So what are you going to do Audrey? Apparently help squeeze sugarcane.

Amazon River Cruise: Adventure Travel in Peru Video Transcript:
Hello from the shores of the Amazon river. This is a pretty cool place to be wouldn't you say? Yeah, this is a bucketlist item for us definitely. So we are currently cruising down the Amazon with Rainforest Cruises. We're going to be spending four days and three nights aboard the Delfin number one. Yeah, and it is a very luxurious boat. We're doing this in style. It is awesome. We're going to give you a tour of the boat and we'd also like to show you some of the really cool excursions that we're going to be doing over these next three to four days. So come along. Let's go.
This feels like yet another episode of MTV cribs. But come on in. We are staying in the Anaconda suite. Pretty cool. No anaconda sighted so far. But basically this is our little terrace. We have a nice balcony with views of the Amazon river. And yeah we can just hang out here, have drinks, read a book, it is pretty cool.
Alright, and let's check out the inside of our room.
Our first afternoon aboard our Amazon Cruise was pretty relaxed and we got to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets ever.
The following morning called for an early start with everyone ready to board the skiff by 6:30 a.m. Our guide had lured us with the promise of wildlife and a delicious breakfast aboard the boat, and thankfully he delivered on both of those.
That morning we saw countless blue and yellow macaws, a school of pink dolphins playfully breaking through the water, and sloths slowly going about their day.
As for breakfast, the captain took us to a secluded lagoon covered in a blanket of water lettuce, where we parked the boat and enjoyed a three course breakfast featuring: fruit-kebabs, chicken and avocado salad, and hot sandwiches. It was the perfect way to start off our day on the Amazon.
So we are back in the jungle. This afternoon we are doing a jungle walking excursion. And we're also going to be doing a canopy walk across a series of suspension bridges. So we're just on the trail. We've got our rubber boots back on.
Meal times were another highlight of our cruise aboard the Delfin I. They had an international menu sure to satisfy every palate, but they also made sure to use Amazonian ingredients and feature Peruvian-inspired dishes at every meal. Every meal was a delight to our foodie taste buds.
So good morning. It is another beautiful day on the Amazon and we've just finished breakfast and we're now heading out on our first excursion of the day. We will be going piranha fishing and if you watched our previous video we already did that at the treehouse; however, I was very unsuccessful while Sam caught the biggest piraña yet.
So we officially ran out of bait for our piranha fishing so we kind of gave up on that activity. But right now we're trying kayaking down one of the smaller tributaries of the Amazon.
I'm the captain of this ship. And that is a scary thought. Cruising down the Amazon.
So we are about to reach the point where the Ucayali River and the Marañón River meet together to form the Amazon. So that moment calls for a toast.
So here is a toast to travels in the Amazon. Salut!
Yeah, so we're visiting this cool kind of little local village. It is called Sanfrancisco. San Francisco. And it has only been around since 1974 so it is just over 40 years old.
So what are you going to do Audrey? Apparently help squeeze sugarcane.

The red-bellied piranha or red piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) is a species of piranha native to South America, found in the Amazon River Basin, coastal rivers of northeastern Brazil, and the basins of the Paraguay and Paraná. They are omnivorous foragers and feed on insects, worms, crustaceans and fish. They are not a migratory species, but do travel to seek out conditions conducive to breeding and spawning during periods of increased rainfall. Red-bellied piranhas often travel in shoals as a predatory defense, but rarely exhibit group hunting behavior. Acoustic communication is common, and is sometimes exhibited along with aggressive behaviors. At this time, the red-bellied piranha is not considered to be a threatened species by the IUCN, and therefore, there are no conservation strategies in place to target this species. Through media influence, the red-bellied piranha has developed a reputation as a ferocious predator, though this is not actually the case. They are a popular aquarium fish.
Taxonomy and phylogeny
The red-bellied piranha belongs to the subfamily Serrasalminae, which is a group of medium to large-sized characids and includes other closely related omnivores such as pacus. They are characterized by deep, lateral compressed bodies and long dorsal fins.[3] Within the subfamily, red-bellied piranhas fall into the genera Pygocentrus, which is distinguished by the unusual dentition and differing head width dimensions. The red-bellied piranha is considered to be highly carnivorous, while most non-piranhas in the family are primarily herbivorous. However, it should be noted that red-bellied piranha is actually omnivorous.
Distribution and habitat
The red-bellied piranha is distributed widely throughout the South American continent and is found in the Neotropical freshwater rivers of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. They live in the warm freshwater drainages of several major rivers including the Amazon, Rio Paraguay, Rio Paraná and Rio Essequibo, as well as numerous smaller systems. It is acclimated to waters that are between 15 and 35 °C and have a pH of 6 to 7 and is typically found in white water rivers and some freshwater streams and lakes. In the Brazilian Amazon, the red-bellied piranha may sometimes inhabit flooded forests.

- AMAZON ADVENTURE -
There are certain places on this planet that seem almost like fiction.
Unreachable destinations that you expect to only see in story books and documentaries.
The Amazon Rainforest in northern Brazil was one of those places for me.
So when I had the opportunity to come to Brazil, I wasn't going to miss the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream.
My experience began in the gateway city of Manaus, where the journey into the jungle proved to be a task unto itself...
I took a taxi from the airport down to the city's main harbor.
It was here that had my first glimpse of the incredible size and scope of the Amazon river on ground level.
From here I crossed the river on a small shuttle boat, passing the point where the Rio Negro converges with the Amazon which forms a really cool color divide in the water.
Once on the other side, I passed street vendors selling giant fish and wild fruits, before boarding an old VW wagon.
Past the small towns and giant lilly pads, we drove further away from civilization before making one last transfer into a small motorboat.
As we weaved through the flooded forest, the reality of this experience started to set in!
The Ararinha Jungle Hotel would serve as the launch pad for all my Rainforest adventures.
By day we explored the river and trekked through the Amazon rainforest.
In the water we looked out for exotic birds, hidden lizards and even the rare pink dolphins and on land it was giant spiders, poison dart frogs and all types of monkeys.
While the rare Anaconda and Jaguar were always in the back of my mind, it was the smaller animals that you really had to be aware of.
We would go catch piranha in the shallow waters and then boat out to the middle of the river nearby to swim.
It was a dangerous and beautiful place, and my senses were heightened the entire time.
Throughout the process, Kenrick and the other guides taught me some important skills and techniques for surviving in the jungle. From making weapons and building shelter to finding the best things to eat if you're hungry.
Another side of life in the Amazon, is the close-nit community of people who live along the river. I was expecting to see naked tribes and face-painted cannibals, but that wasn't the case at all.
I had the opportunity to meet and interact with many local residents and despite the remote location, life here seems relatively normal, and it comes with an alluring simplicity and self-sufficiency.
One morning we visited one of local farms who were in the middle of cultivating the popular Brazilian staple, Farinha or Farofa. He should us how to transform the poisones root into an edible side-dish and I even popped my top to help out.
On another day we were invited to a house party with some of the off-duty guides and surrounding neighbors.
It was great to see what life was like on a Friday night with people my age in the Amazon.
And at night, when the sensible locals would turn in, we'd launch the boat again and head out to explore the darkness.
With 75% of the animals here being nocturnal, the noises and commotion at night were like nothing I've ever heard.
The easiest thing to spot were caimans, whose beady red eyes surfaced across the river. And apparently, if you're fast and quiet enough, you can reach down into the water and grab one.
On my final day in the Amazon, we decided to take a small crew out to get the full effect of the jungle, and go camp out.
We found a flat, dry space not far from the river and worked quickly to setup camp before dark.
We chopped trees for a tarp frame, cautiously gathered firewood and began cooking dinner over the fire.
As darkness and a little paranoia set in, we enjoyed dinner and drinks to the developing sounds around us.
We listened to music, played cards, and of course, peed close by.
We had some more drinks, made hats out of palm branch and shared stories well into the night.
After an camp-made breakfast with fresh fruit, eggs and coffee, it was time for me to pack up and head back to Manaus.
And although I spent a week engulfed in this incredible place… the people, the wildlife, the environment… everything still makes the Amazon seem like fiction...
