Jim Howard defined the art of fashion illustrations during the 70s, 80s and 90s. His highly admired work graced the advertising campaigns of America s top department stores, cosmetic companies and advertising agencies. Instantly recognizable, Jim's style was realistic and yet totally expressionistic, too. Deep, dramatic shadows, meticulous rendering of fabrics, plus an amazing blend of freestyle sketching and careful attention to details made every one of his illustrations into a memorable piece of art.
Jim s list of clients reads like a Who's Who of fashion retailers: Neiman Marcus, Bonwit Teller, B. Altman, Marshall Field's, Garfinkel's, I. Magnin, Dillards, Bon Marche, Bullocks and others. Back in November, FORGE. met up with New York based editorial illustrator Victo Ngai at her Manhattan apartment. We first noticed Victo's incredibly detailed and intricate illustrations through her work for The New York Times and The New Yorker, and she quickly became one of the first artists we sought out to interview as we were planning our 1st issue. Although it took us about a year to get into the same room as each other, the wait was definitely worth it. Victo talked about her experience going to RISD, how she approaches developing a style, and how she ended up leaving Hong Kong to study art in the U.S. Victo was incredibly kind and easy to talk to, and gave us some great advice about art school and finding work afterwords.

Illustrator
An illustrator is an artist who specializes in enhancing writing or elucidating concepts by providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text or idea. The illustration may be intended to clarify complicated concepts or objects that are difficult to describe textually, which is the reason illustrations are often found in children's books.
Illustrations have been used in advertisements, architectural rendering, greeting cards, posters, books, graphic novels, storyboards, manuals, business, magazines, shirts greeting cards, video games, tutorials and newspapers. A cartoon illustration can add humor to stories or essays.
Techniques
Some traditional illustration techniques include watercolor, pen and ink, airbrush art, oil painting, pastels, wood engraving, and linoleum cuts. John Held, Jr. was an illustrator who worked in a variety of styles and media, including linoleum cuts, pen and ink drawings, magazine cover paintings, cartoons, comic strips, and set design, while also creating fine art with his animal sculptures and watercolor, many established illustrators attended an art school or college of some sort and were trained in different painting and drawing techniques. Universities and art schools offer specific courses in illustration (for example in the UK, a BA (Hons) Degree) so this has become a new avenue into the profession. Many illustrators are freelance, commissioned by publishers (of newspapers, books, or magazines) or advertising agencies. Most scientific illustrations and technical illustrations are also known as information graphics. Among the information graphics specialists are medical illustrators who illustrate human anatomy, often requiring many years of artistic and medical training.

Interview
An interview is a conversation between two or more people where questions are asked by the interviewer to elicit facts or statements from the interviewee. Interviews are a standard part of qualitative research. They are also used in journalism and media reporting (see Interview (journalism)) and in various employment-related contexts.
The qualitative research interview seeks to describe and the meanings of central themes in the life world of the subjects. The main task in interviewing is to understand the meaning of what the interviewees say. Interviewing, when considered as a method for conducting qualitative research, is a technique used to understand the experiences of others.

Back in November, FORGE. met up with New York based editorial illustrator Victo Ngai at her Manhattan apartment. We first noticed Victo's incredibly detailed and intricate illustrations through her work for The New York Times and The New Yorker, and she quickly became one of the first artists we sought out to interview as we were planning our 1st issue. Although it took us about a year to get into the same room as each other, the wait was definitely worth it. SCOTT ROBERTS received his M.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His sculptures, video installations and animations have been exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions in New York City, San Francisco, and Chicago, and screenings in Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation Festival. He also has over ten years of professional experience in television art direction, post-production, animation and 3D game art, and was the production designer for the independent film 'MAKING REVOLUTION'. He most recently was Associate Professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, where he taught animation and motion graphics for five years and helped establish a Time Based Media BFA program.

An image is worth a thousand words.
Is this the reason why in the world of publishing, journalism, media, illustration is used so often? Be it the cover of a book, or the fact it matches an article, or that it allows to make an infographic or commercial, illustration, still or animated, it has become the key to success and awareness of a variety of newspapers and magazines.
But who lies behind the image? An illustrator, naturally.
The work of a freelance illustrator is a "new" job, especially in Europe, also if from some perspectives it could be considered as ancient as printing. Nowadays illustrators are recognized at an international level, they earn a lot, and travel to find new sources of inspiration.
How do you become an illustrator? How does an image come to life? How much time does it take to create a personal and recognizable style? What steps do you have to take to become famous and work for magazines, websites and international newspapers?
ILLUSTRATORS is a documentary that asks these questions to four Italian artists, who are wide world famous and have been awarded many prizes and recognitions: Alessandro "Shout" Gottardo, Emiliano Ponzi, Olimpia Zagnoli and Francesco Poroli. Four people who, through talent and technology, have managed to pursue their dream.

Be it the cover of a book, or the fact it matches an article, or that it allows to make an infographic or commercial, illustration, still or animated, it has become the key to success and awareness of a variety of newspapers and magazines.
But who lies behind the image? An illustrator, naturally.
The work of a freelance illustrator is a "new" job, especially in Europe, also if from some perspectives it could be considered as ancient as printing. Nowadays illustrators are recognized at an international level, they earn a lot, and travel to find new sources of inspiration.
How do you become an illustrator? How does an image come to life? How much time does it take to create a personal and recognizable style? What steps do you have to take to become famous and work for magazines, websites and international newspapers?
ILLUSTRATORS is a documentary that asks these questions to four Italian artists, who are wide world famous and have been awarded many prizes and recognitions: Alessandro "Shout" Gottardo, Emiliano Ponzi, Olimpia Zagnoli and Francesco Poroli. Four people who, through talent and technology, have managed to pursue their dream.
The list of newspapers they work for is boundless: The New York Times, The New Yorker, Los Angeles Times, Time, Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, The Washington Post , Businessweek, The Boston Globe, Le Monde, The Guardian, London Telegraph, Rolling Stone as well as many advertising and media agencies.
ILLUSTRATORS unveils their personal and intimate side and tells how, by starting with a pencil sketch, you may conquer the world without having to write a word. Because, indeed, an image is worth than a thousand words.

“That was the beginning of my film and photography career – my first image ended up under the Russian soldier’s boot.” Watch Jonas Mekas, Laurie Anderson, Paul Auster, Gerhard Richter and 7 other acclaimed artists on how they began their career.
Avant-garde filmmaker and poet Jonas Mekas (b. 1922 in Lithuania) got his first still camera the very same week that the Russian tanks began rolling in, and his first picture was thus of Russian tanks – until a lieutenant took his camera and smashed it. Swiss video artist Pipilotti Rist (b. 1962) really just wanted to get hold of a free ticket for a film festival when she submitted her video ‘I’m Not The Girl Who Misses Much’ (1986), which she now considers “the only good work I ever did.” American visual artist George Condo (b. 1957) reflects on his first set of oil paints, while it was the gift of paper and pastels on his 22nd birthday, that made German artist Jonathan Meese (b.1970) realize his true calling. British painter Cecily Brown (b. 1969) nurtured an early fascination of “scary” art: “I had sneak looks at it, like you might look at Playboy”, just as German painter Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) was attracted by art’s capacity for uncertainty, perplexity – and coincidence. American writer Paul Auster (b. 1947) tells the story of how striking out on an autograph from a legendary baseball player led him to become a writer.
“Try to do something on the right scale – something that you can do yourself.” From the beginning, American multimedia artist Laurie Anderson (b. 1947) wanted to keep things simple, which has allowed her to try out different things. At the age of 14, performance artist Marina Abramović (b. 1946 in Belgrade) received her first painting lesson: the teacher created an explosion by setting fire to the painting, and this experience is at the root of her understanding of performance art as being about the process, not the result. South African artist William Kentridge (b. 1955) failed at painting, acting and filmmaking, but rediscovered everything again at the age of 30, when he accepted that he was indeed an artist with all that he wanted to include in that term. Finally, Syrian poet Adonis (b. 1930) shares how he presented the president with a poem he had written in his honour, and how this poem made such an impression on the president that he granted him a wish – that of going to school: ”That’s how I got to go to school with a poem. And that’s why I feel that I was born for poetry.”
