What is Refractive Index | Absolute Refractive Index | Optical Density Explained | Grade 10 Physics
What is Refractive Index, Formula Explanation Absolute Refractive Index Optical Density Explained for Grade 10 & 12 Physics.
A ray of light changes its direction when it enters from one medium to another medium. This happens because speed of light is different in different media. For example; the speed of light is 3 x 〖10〗^8 m/s (2.99x〖𝟏𝟎〗^𝟖 m/s) in vacuum and it is 2.98 x 〖10〗^8 m/s in air.
Refractive Index is the extent of change of direction of light in a given pair of media. The refractive index is a relative value of speed of light in the given pair of media. Thus, to calculate the refractive Index the speed of light in two media is taken.
Let the speed of light in medium 1 is v1 and in medium 2 is v2
Therefore; refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 (n21)

Refraction of Light
This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the refraction of light. It discusses the law of reflection and the law of refraction which is also known as Snell's Law. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. This video also explains how to calculate the angle of refraction as well as the critical angle that leads to total internal reflection. This video also explains how to calculate the speed of light in water. The speed of light decreases as light moves from a material with a low index of refraction to a material with a higher index of refraction.

Refraction and Refractive Index | Learn with BYJU'S
Why do stars twinkle? Why do we see a delayed sunrise and sunset?
Light exhibits some interesting phenomena when it passes through different media, chief among them being refraction. To answer the questions above, we need to understand what is refraction Refraction and Refractive Index, why it happens and how it affects how we see objects.
We at Byju's Classes strongly believe that a spirit of learning and understanding can only be inculcated when the student is curious, and that curiosity can be brought about by creative and effective teaching. It is this approach that makes our lectures so successful and gives our students an edge over their counterparts.

The Refractive Index:The refractive index can be linked to an important physical quantity, the relative speed of propagation of light in different media. It turns out that light propagates with different speeds in different media. Light travels the fastest in vacuum with the highest speed of 3×108 meter per second. In air, the speed of light is only marginally less, compared to that in vacuum. Therefore, speed of light in air is taken as 3x108meter per second. It reduces considerably in glass or water. The value of the refractive index for a given pair of media depends upon the speed of light in the two media, as given below.Consider a ray of light travelling from medium 1 into medium 2.Let ν1 be the speed of light in medium 1 and ν2is the speed of light in medium 2. According to Snell's law, the refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 is represented as μtwo one, it is given by. In the same way, the refractive index of medium 1 with respect to medium 2 is represented as μone two. It is given by. If medium 1 is vacuum or air, then the refractive index of medium 2 is considered with respect to vacuum. This is called the absolute refractive index of the medium. It is simply represented as μ2. If c is the speed of light in air and ν is the speed of light in the medium, then, the refractive index of the medium nm is given by

Let the speed of light in medium 1 is v1 and in medium 2 is v2
Therefore; refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 (n21)
When one medium is taken as vacuum and speed of light is taken in it, then the refractive index of second medium with respect to vacuum is called Absolute Refractive Index and it is generally denoted by n2.
Optical Density: Medium having greater value of refractive index is called optically denser medium, this means light will travel at slower speed in optically denser medium compared to in an optically rarer medium.

This lecture is about refractive index in physics. In this animated tutorial, I will teach you the easy concept of refractive index, optical density, rarer medium, denser medium, refractive index of glass, refraction of light, refractive index of water, refractive index of diamond, refractive index formula, refractive index numerical problems, refractive index definition, absolute refractive index, relative refractive index, speed of light in a vacuum, speed of light in a medium like glass, diamond, water, etc. Also, you will learn how to find refractive index.
Q: What is refractive index?
Q: Define refractive index.
Ans: The ratio of speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in a specific medium is called refractive index. One can also say that refractive index measures the optical density of a medium. For example, the refractive index of a glass is 1.5. It shows that the speed of light in a glass is 1.5 times slower than the speed of light in a vacuum.
