Scientists from the University of Utah were conducting a study on scavenger behavior in Utah's Grassy Mountains. They set out seven calf carcasses with camera traps, and after a week they noticed one carcass was missing. When they checked the footage, they found a determined badger that completely buried the calf over the course of five days. Badgers cache their food to hide it from other scavengers as well as to make it last longer.

The badger was released on BLM land a couple of miles from where it was captured. The land was flush with ground-squirrels, and rabbits, and contained very little badger sign that would indicate a competition for the territory.

The farmer had a badger problem, that would eventually lead to injury to livestock, damaged farm equipment, and the death of the badger. The farmer gets rid of a nuisance, and the badger got a new, safer home.
-That’s illegal! Aren’t badgers endangered/protected?
Exactly zero laws were broken in the removal, and relocation of this animal. American Badgers are not a protected species. In Idaho, they are classified as a predator species, and can be hunted, trapped, and killed year round, without limit, and have no meat or fur use requirements. However, in this case, the badger was not killed, or harmed. It was removed.
What about the badger’s babies?
The badger was a juvenile male who was attempting to establish his own territory, and thus was without pups. However, even if he had been a breeding female, there would have been no babies: this video was taken in November. Badgers have a delayed gestation, and do not give birth until early spring. By late fall, the young ones would no longer be dependent on their mother.

-How would you like it if someone relocated you?
If I was causing damage to someone’s property that is used to create food for you, your family, and everyone else, and was in danger of being shot by a farmer, or run over by a tractor, I would be very appreciative of being removed from the situation. Unfortunately, seeing as how badgers are badgers, there was not a way to reason with the little guy, and explain what was going on, and why it needed to happen. That's why animals can't get arrested for trespassing. And that's why he needed to be removed against his will; he couldn't understand the full scope of the situation.
-Why are there so many dislikes and negative comments?
People either don’t read video descriptions, or don’t understand how things actually function on planet earth, and all of those people like to congregate on YouTube together.
-Is that a honey badger?
No, it is an American badger.
-Do honey badgers give a shit?
Absolutely not.
-Why didn’t you use tranquilizers?
We are not vets, and do not know the correct dosage, nor have access to the appropriate tranquilizers for a badger. Without such knowledge, we would potentially cause the badger more harm than capturing him with a sheet.
-Why were you wearing camo?
To hide from your mom. She wouldn’t stop calling us.
-Scavenging?
Yes. Can you believe it? Someone mispronounced something in a non-scripted single-take of a video. He might be the only person to ever do that, so that makes him a pioneer.

Badger
Badgers are short-legged omnivores in the family Mustelidae, which also includes the otters, polecats, weasels and wolverines. They belong to the caniform suborder of carnivoran mammals.
The 11 species of badger are grouped in three subfamilies: Melinae (Eurasian badgers), Mellivorinae (the honey badger or ratel) and Taxideinae (the American badger). The Asiatic stink badgers of the genus Mydaus were formerly included within Melinae (and thus Mustelidae), but recent genetic evidence indicates these are actually members of the skunk family, placing them in the taxonomic family Mephitidae.
Badgers include the species in the genera Meles, Arctonyx, Taxidea and Mellivora. Their lower jaws are articulated to the upper by means of transverse condyles firmly locked into long cavities of the skull, so dislocation of the jaw is all but impossible. This enables the badgers to maintain their hold with the utmost tenacity, but limits jaw movement to hinging open and shut, or sliding from side to side without the twisting movement possible for the jaws of most mammals.

Honey badger
The honey badger (Mellivora capensis), also known as the ratel (/ˈreɪtəl/ or /ˈrɑːtəl/), is the only species in the mustelid subfamily Mellivorinae and its only genus Mellivora. It is native to Africa, Southwest Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. Despite its name, the honey badger does not closely resemble other badger species; instead, it bears more anatomical similarities to weasels. It is classed as Least Concern by the IUCN owing to its extensive range and general environmental adaptations. It is primarily a carnivorous species and has few natural predators because of its thick skin and ferocious defensive abilities.
Etymology
Ratel is an Afrikaans word, possibly derived from the Middle Dutch word raat for honeycomb (either because of its cry or its taste for honey).
Taxonomy
The honey badger is the only species of the genus Mellivora. Although in the 1860s it was assigned to the badger subfamily, the Melinae, it is now generally agreed that it bears very few similarities to the Melinae. It is much more closely related to the marten subfamily, Mustelinae, but furthermore is assigned its own subfamily, Mellivorinae. Differences between Mellivorinae and Melinae include differences in their dentition formulae. Though not in the same subfamily as the wolverines, which are a genus of large-sized and atypical Mustelinae, the honey badger can be regarded as another, analogous, form of outsized weasel or polecat.

Badgers (animation)
Badgers is a Flash cartoon by British animator Jonti "Weebl" Picking. It consists of 12 animated cartoon badgers doing calisthenics, a toadstool in front of a tree, and a snake in the desert. Accompanied by electronic dance music, a voice repeats the word "badger" over the animation, breaking off to say either "mushroom" or "snake, it's a snake".
The cartoon, published 2 September 2003, loops indefinitely. The first two badger scenes contain twelve badgers; subsequent badger scenes contain eleven badgers. After a long running time, the song becomes out of sync with the animation.
The cartoon brought Picking to the attention of MTV Europe, for whom Picking produced Weebl and Bob. That cartoon series, together with the dancing badgers, helped Picking's website Weebl's Stuff win a People's Choice award from users of Yahoo! in the UK. "Badger Badger Badger" was also listed as one of the top five internet fads of all time by PC World in 2009.
Follow-up versions
There have been several follow ups to the "Badger Badger Badger" cartoon posted to the Weebl's Stuff website. "Badgers 2" was created in 2003, and features zombie badgers on a black background with a scratching sound added to the music. A Christmas-themed version, with the badgers dressed in Santa Claus suits, is also available.Badgers On a Plane consists of a scene from a Snakes On a Plane trailer that includes badgers and a mushroom, which have been digitally edited into the scene, tumbling from their seats while a bit of the song plays in the background. In 2007, Big Ass Badgers was released to spoof the Transformers film. Also in 2007, a live action version of the cartoon called Baby Badgers was released to promote the new Badger toys.

Widespread until the late 1800's, there are less than 300 badgers left in BC, and they are now 'Red Listed'. The badger's loss of habitat has been mostly from land development and road kill incidence. Through groups like the Wilderness Committee here in BC, we're hoping to raise awareness through videos such as this to make people aware that these beautiful animals are out there and working extra hard to make a living. -

BADGER
Near the middle of May, 2011 I set out to 100 Mile to document Badgers in their natural environment. Widespread until the late 1800's, there are less than 300 badgers left in BC, and they are now 'Red Listed'. The badger's loss of habitat has been mostly from land development and road kill incidence. Through groups like the Wilderness Committee here in BC, we're hoping to raise awareness through videos such as this to make people aware that these beautiful animals are out there and working extra hard to make a living.

Badger Pencil Test
Rough pencil test of grouchy badger. The xerox copies I have say it's by Glen Keane, but I have not confirmed that . If anyone has the draft for the movie and can confirm who animated this then I'd appreciate it. The drawings don't look typical of what we think of as "the Glen Keane style" of drawing, so I am not convinced that this is Glen's but I should also say that over the years I've seen some of Glen Keane's drawings that are tighter than usual.

The badger was released on BLM land a couple of miles from where it was captured. The land was flush with ground-squirrels, and rabbits, and contained very little badger sign that would indicate a competition for the territory.
-How dare you!?
The farmer had a badger problem, that would eventually lead to injury to livestock, damaged farm equipment, and the death of the badger. The farmer gets rid of a nuisance, and the badger got a new, safer home.
-That’s illegal! Aren’t badgers endangered/protected?
Exactly zero laws were broken in the removal, and relocation of this animal. American Badgers are not a protected species. In Idaho, they are classified as a predator species, and can be hunted, trapped, and killed year round, without limit, and have no meat or fur use requirements. However, in this case, the badger was not killed, or harmed. It was removed.
What about the badger’s babies?
The badger was a juvenile male who was attempting to establish his own territory, and thus was without pups. However, even if he had been a breeding female, there would have been no babies: this video was taken in November. Badgers have a delayed gestation, and do not give birth until early spring. By late fall, the young ones would no longer be dependent on their mother.

-How would you like it if someone relocated you?
If I was causing damage to someone’s property that is used to create food for you, your family, and everyone else, and was in danger of being shot by a farmer, or run over by a tractor, I would be very appreciative of being removed from the situation. Unfortunately, seeing as how badgers are badgers, there was not a way to reason with the little guy, and explain what was going on, and why it needed to happen. That's why animals can't get arrested for trespassing. And that's why he needed to be removed against his will; he couldn't understand the full scope of the situation.
-Why are there so many dislikes and negative comments?
People either don’t read video descriptions, or don’t understand how things actually function on planet earth, and all of those people like to congregate on YouTube together.
-Is that a honey badger?
No, it is an American badger.
-Do honey badgers give a shit?
Absolutely not.
-Why didn’t you use tranquilizers?
We are not vets, and do not know the correct dosage, nor have access to the appropriate tranquilizers for a badger. Without such knowledge, we would potentially cause the badger more harm than capturing him with a sheet.
-Why were you wearing camo?
To hide from your mom. She wouldn’t stop calling us.
-Scavenging?
Yes. Can you believe it? Someone mispronounced something in a non-scripted single-take of a video. He might be the only person to ever do that, so that makes him a pioneer.

The badger was released on BLM land a couple of miles from where it was captured. The land was flush with ground-squirrels, and rabbits, and contained very little badger sign that would indicate a competition for the territory.
-How dare you!?
The farmer had a badger problem, that would eventually lead to injury to livestock, damaged farm equipment, and the death of the badger. The farmer gets rid of a nuisance, and the badger got a new, safer home.
-That’s illegal! Aren’t badgers endangered/protected?
Exactly zero laws were broken in the removal, and relocation of this animal. American Badgers are not a protected species. In Idaho, they are classified as a predator species, and can be hunted, trapped, and killed year round, without limit, and have no meat or fur use requirements. However, in this case, the badger was not killed, or harmed. It was removed.
What about the badger’s babies?
The badger was a juvenile male who was attempting to establish his own territory, and thus was without pups. However, even if he had been a breeding female, there would have been no babies: this video was taken in November. Badgers have a delayed gestation, and do not give birth until early spring. By late fall, the young ones would no longer be dependent on their mother.

-How would you like it if someone relocated you?
If I was causing damage to someone’s property that is used to create food for you, your family, and everyone else, and was in danger of being shot by a farmer, or run over by a tractor, I would be very appreciative of being removed from the situation. Unfortunately, seeing as how badgers are badgers, there was not a way to reason with the little guy, and explain what was going on, and why it needed to happen. That's why animals can't get arrested for trespassing. And that's why he needed to be removed against his will; he couldn't understand the full scope of the situation.
-Why are there so many dislikes and negative comments?
People either don’t read video descriptions, or don’t understand how things actually function on planet earth, and all of those people like to congregate on YouTube together.
-Is that a honey badger?
No, it is an American badger.
-Do honey badgers give a shit?
Absolutely not.
-Why didn’t you use tranquilizers?
We are not vets, and do not know the correct dosage, nor have access to the appropriate tranquilizers for a badger. Without such knowledge, we would potentially cause the badger more harm than capturing him with a sheet.
-Why were you wearing camo?
To hide from your mom. She wouldn’t stop calling us.
-Scavenging?
Yes. Can you believe it? Someone mispronounced something in a non-scripted single-take of a video. He might be the only person to ever do that, so that makes him a pioneer.
-What don’t we need?
No stinkin’ badgers.

Near the middle of May, 2011 I set out to 100 Mile to document Badgers in their natural environment. Widespread until the late 1800's, there are less than 300 badgers left in BC, and they are now 'Red Listed'. The badger's loss of habitat has been mostly from land development and road kill incidence.
Through groups like the Wilderness Committee here in BC, we're hoping to raise awareness through videos such as this to make people aware that these beautiful animals are out there and working extra hard to make a living.

If anyone has the draft for the movie and can confirm who animated this then I'd appreciate it. The drawings don't look typical of what we think of as "the Glen Keane style" of drawing, so I am not convinced that this is Glen's but I should also say that over the years I've seen some of Glen Keane's drawings that are tighter than usual.
