Stuart Pigott (born 26 May 1960 in Orpington, Kent) is a British wine critic and author who has lived in Berlin since 1993. Pigott mostly writes in German, and focuses on German wine. He writes for the specialist magazines Feinschmecker and Weingourmet as well as the Sunday edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Between 1979 and 1986, Pigott studied various art-related subjects off and on at Goldsmiths College of Art, St. Martins School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He ended up with a Master's degree in the History of Culture. During his studies he started as a wine writer, and published his first piece in Decanter magazine in 1984.
Pigott moved to Berlin with his wife, sommelier and later food writer Ursula Heinzelmann, in late 1993 and published his first German-language book in 1994. From early on, he joined fellow British wine writer Hugh Johnson in taking a critical view towards the mass production mentality that prevailed in parts of the German wine industry, and thus became popular with more quality-oriented producers.
Martina Hellmann (née Opitz, born 12 December 1960) is a retired German track and field athlete who represented East Germany. She was the Olympic champion in the discus throw at the 1988 Summer Olympics. She also won the World Championship in that event in 1983 and again in 1987.
Born in Leipzig, Saxony, Hellmann was sixteen years old when she began participating in the event. In 1977 she gave the participants' oath at the opening of the East German gymnastics and sport festival. That summer she set the world record for 16-year-olds with a throw of 55.00 meters. Her career was plagued by sickness and injury until 1983 when she became the surprise world champion. She was unable to compete at the 1984 summer Olympic games due to her country's boycott.
On 6 September 1988 she threw the discus 78.14 meters, further than anybody had ever thrown it before or after. However, this throw was in an unofficial tournament in the East German training camp at Kienbaum set up to decide the final GDR place for the Olympic games in Seoul and was not eligible to be considered a world record. During this session she threw the following incredible distances: 76.92m - 78.14m - 70.52m - 76.56m - 75.66m - 74.04m. Ilke Wyludda threw a life-time best 75.36 m, but had to stay home. Five of Hellmann's throws were better than her official best of 72.92 metres, achieved in August 1987 in Potsdam. This result only ranks her tenth on the world all-time list and sixth among German discus throwers, behind Gabriele Reinsch, Ilke Wyludda, Diana Gansky-Sachse, Irina Meszynski and Gisela Beyer.
Track and field is a sport which combines various athletic contests based on the skills of running, jumping, and throwing. The name is derived from the sport's typical venue: a stadium with an oval running track enclosing a grass field where the throwing and jumping events take place. It is one of the oldest sports. In ancient times, it was an event held in conjunction with festivals and sports meets such as the Ancient Olympic Games in Greece.
The running events, which include sprints, middle and long-distance events, and hurdling, are won by the athlete with the fastest time. The jumping and throwing events are won by the athlete who achieves the greatest distance or height. Regular jumping events include long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault, while the most common throwing events are shot put, javelin, discus and hammer. There are also "combined events", such as heptathlon and decathlon, in which athletes compete in a number of the above events. Most track and field events are individual sports with a single victor, but a number are relay races. Events are almost exclusively divided by gender, although both the men's and women's competitions are usually held at the same venue.
Abi Ekoku (born 13 April 1966) is a former track and field athlete in both Discus and Shot put, as well as a former rugby league player, who is now a director at international property group Candelisa Resorts.
Ekoku represented Great Britain and England at the Commonwealth Games, European Athletics Championships, and was AAA’s National Champion in the Discus held in Sheffield in 1992 and UK Champion in the early 1990s.
Ekoku spent six years as a professional rugby league player as a wing. He started his rugby league career with London Crusaders, playing on a part-time basis whilst also lecturing in further education. He was signed by Halifax in July 1995, and played in the inaugural Super League season with the club. He joined Bradford Bulls in 1997, helping the club win the Super League that year, and also played in the 1997 Challenge Cup against St Helens at Wembley.
Ekoku announced his retirement from playing in 1998, and became chairman of the Rugby League Players' Association. He quit this post in 1999, and had a brief spell as chief executive at Keighley Cougars before being appointed by Bradford Bulls in a similar role. Ekoku was chief executive at Bradford from 2000 to 2003 - a period in which the club won the Super League, Challenge Cup and World Club Championship.
