Joe Swanberg (born August 31, 1981) is an American independent director, producer, writer, and actor. Known for micro-budget dramas which make extensive use of improvisation, Swanberg is considered a major figure in the mumblecore film movement. His films often focus on relationships, sex, technology, and the filmmaking process.
Swanberg was born on August 31, 1981 in Detroit, Michigan, and was mostly raised in Georgia and Alabama. He graduated from Naperville Central High School in suburban Chicago and attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale as a film major, earning a Bachelor's Degree in 2003.
In 2005, Swanberg directed his first feature, Kissing on the Mouth. He followed it with LOL (2006), which marked Swanberg's first time working with actress Greta Gerwig. Gerwig and Swanberg collaborated on the director's next two features: Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007), which also starred filmmakers Andrew Bujalski, Ry Russo-Young, and Mark Duplass and marked Swanberg's first collaboration with animator and actor Kent Osborne; and Nights and Weekends (2008), on which Gerwig shared a directing credit. Swanberg's next feature, Alexander the Last, was produced by Noah Baumbach, who would later cast Gerwig opposite Ben Stiller in his 2010 film Greenberg.

www.berlinfilmcentral.com Joe Swanberg is one of the most prolific filmmakers in the U.S. He makes more than one film per year and his latest two features, "Silver Bullets" and "Art History" premiered together at the 61st Berlinale in the Forum section. He also premiered "Uncle Kent" at Sundance earlier this year and he is one of the so called "Mumblecore" pioneers. We met with him and his actresses Kate Lyn Scheil from "Silver Bullets" and Josephine Decker from "Art History" at their Hotel in Berlin to chat a little about the filmmaking process and acting in a Joe Swanberg film. The BFC Channel is a small Vidcast intended to feature filmmakers and anyone related to Cinema in Berlin, premiering with this two part interview. PLEASE EXCUSE THE BAD AUDIO, we will work to improve that!...

Filmmaker Joe Swanberg is a true independent in every sense of the word. Marc looks at Joe’s most recent films, Happy Christmas and Drinking Buddies, to understand Joe’s approach to his art. Also, Joe talks about shooting on film, the kind of movies he thinks should win Oscars, why he seeks out certain actors and what his version of a major studio film would look like.

For this week’s Inconvenient Interview w/Risa, I sit down to a Brooklyn Brewery beer tasting with Joe Swanberg and Jake Johnson to talk about their latest film, “Digging for Fire”. We get distracted for awhile, debating everything from word abbreviations to release dates, but in the end we find our way back to the important things like finding terrifying items in your backyard and the proper way to fight ‘old-school’. The film – co-written by the two, directed by Joe, and starring Jake – is currently showing in select theaters, and available on iTunes and VOD. Go check it out! GreenCine interview with Joe Swanberg on Hannah Takes the Stairs, by Jonathan Marlow and Hannah Eaves. Question: How Did Joe Cast Hannah Takes the Stairs?
B.B. baby tell me what you wanna say
Can't wait to hurt you and then run away
I bet you think it's gonna go your way
But this time I will be the one who plays
Now that you look in my eyes
All you find is just a world of lies
And you'll go down on your knees
Know that it's my turn this time
Don't even doubt it that I'll take my shot
And I'll make sure that you'll feel it collide
Oh, I wish you well
Tonight I'm LOL
Tonight I'm LOL
Wanna get you
Oh, I wish you well
Tonight I'm LOL
Tonight I'm LOL
Gonna get you
I feel dirty
I'm not done until you stop breathin'
I feel nasty
'Cause it's time to get what I want
Oh, I wish you well
Tonight I'm LOL
Tonight I'm LOL
Gonna get you
You know what happens when you play around?
You get burned and look who's crying now
Baby I told you many times don't lie1
And now I'm taking my revenge, against, against you
Now that you look in my eyes
All you find is just a world of lies
And you'll go down on your knees
Know that it's my turn this time
Don't even doubt it that I'll take my shot
And I'll make sure that you'll feel it collide
Oh, I wish you well
Tonight I'm LOL
Tonight I'm LOL
Wanna get you
Oh, I wish you well
Tonight I'm LOL

I feel dirty
I'm not done until you stop breathin'
I feel nasty
'Cause it's time to get what I want (Woah!)
Oh, I wish you well
Tonight I'm LOL
Tonight I'm LOL
Gonna get you
I see your heart beating strong in your chest
My love it's too dangerous for you to contest
You cannot hide what you're feelin' inside
I bet you'll think twice before cheating next time
I see your heart beating strong in your chest
My love it's too dangerous for you to contest
You cannot hide what you're feelin' inside
I bet you'll think twice before cheating next time
Oh, I wish you well
