The short was shot partially during the Jodlow Star Party 2010 in the middle of September, where we did serious testing of DitoGear™ Slider pre-production units and also during a few recent days at surprising surroundings of Wrocław, Poland. What I love about this slider is that it works either in horizontal and vertical mode giving the option for crane-like shots. It adds a lot to your shooting style being very compact and portable at the same time. Needless to say it works not only as a time-lapse dolly, but also as a video slider at higher speeds. The short, however, features only timelapse shots. As you get more and more gear it is sometimes difficult to keep focused on shooting. The slider is very easy and quick to setup and provides a really intuitive and convenient user interface. I can virtually start shooting within 3 minutes on a location. It is a huge step forward comparing to my previous DIY timelapse dolly which took ma about an hour to setup. My friends Lucas, Sanaz, Jeff and I spent 5 days in Tokyo, 2 days in Kyoto in March of 2010. We tried to time it in sync with Sakura, and got there right as it began. My awesome friend Saiko, who lives in Roppongi Tokyo, met up with us and showed us a great time. This was my first serious outing with my 5D MKII and let me tell you, it was not easy. This camera is amazing when you have your shots set up, but being on-the-go it was like guerrilla film making 101. Having to manually adjust everything and compensate for changes in environment was a quick way to get very intimate with the camera, and I'm happy with the results. The firmware to allow 24p was released the day before I left. I had been counting down the days and I think the results speak for themselves. This is by all means a vacation video, so unless you were there some of this footage may not be very exciting. I've thought about going back through and re-cutting a shorter version with the highlights. The gear I had on me at all times: - Manfrotto 732CY Carbon Tripod - Manfrotto 700RC2 Fluid Tripod Head - GlideTrack DSLR - Canon 5D MKII Body - Canon 50mm f/1.4 - Canon 24-105mm f/4 L IS I'd say 80-90% of the video was shot using the 24-105mm since it allowed me to quickly go wide or close for stills and video. When I had time to set up a shot I switched to the 50mm for shorter depth. Shot/edited in 1080p using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 on Windows 7 x64. The only downside to making a cool vacation video is that I'm only in it for about 20 seconds total :)

Endless. One plastic string, made out of old refrigerators, crafted by a robot, into a chair. When the first plastic chairs were made, they began with fairly simple tools and moulds to form the plastic. The simple tools were easy to adjust and this gave the designer the chance to evaluate the final product and adjust the tools almost endlessly. As labour grew more and more expensive, it was filtered out of the process with automated and complicated tools. These automated processes have been very inflexible until now. High investments in complicated moulds made it almost impossible for a designer to evaluate and refine his final object. The designer is no longer involved in the production process and the design stage is completely shifted to a pre production phase. As Dirk van der Kooij considered this a lost chance he made a pact with the devil, because he found a solution, not in labour but in computerization. By combining different techniques, he was able to design an automated but very flexible process. He taught a robot his new craft, drawing furniture out of one endlessly long plastic string. This opened the possibility for Dirk van der Kooij to design in the good old-fashioned way, making a chair, evaluating, refining, making a chair, evaluating, refining and making a chair. Or developing an infinitely large collection of variations. Endless.

Pacific Grand Prix is the BEST!!! Now on to the rest of the post. When you think of Washington you should think of three things... 1. Over weight women in spandex wielding umbrellas and peanut butter sandwiches 2. Thick green landscapes for Bigfoot to hide in, waiting to jump out and snatch your first born, and 3. Out of control, two day, multi-track drift events! Ever since I could remember I have thought of Washington as the Bermuda Triangle... if you go there you might never come back. For Oregonians, it's the state always getting in the way. Your friends move there when you least want them to, the fun events are always JUST too far away, the weather seems to be plotting against you... But now there's a light, a small ray of hope, for the rained out state of Washington. That of course is the thriving automotive scene, putting on events left and right: car shows, meets, drift events, drag racing, you name it. Not to mention the absolutely amazing cars being built by some of the local tuning and fabrication shops... When I heard that two of the northwest tracks had worked together via local celebrity/male model Rob Primo, I was instantly excited. Rob, Matt and Darren have been putting on some very choice drift events in 2010, and this 2-day event was no exception. The first day at Evergreen Speedway was interesting... There seemed to be an abnormally high number of wrecks, which quickly put drivers on edge. And for media, the seemingly constant call of "THE TRACK IS HOT!" had the same effect. So I ended up hanging around the other MotorMavens guys and keeping it easy, far, far away from the "officials." The next day started off completely differently: Blue skies! Green grass! Happy track officials! Everyone seemed to have a different energy about them. People were running around helping each other prep cars, change tires, set up booths. The vibe was intoxicating. The drivers, the crowd, everyone was excited to get the cars on the track. The track owners, Paul and Juli, were able to better support the media team, and provided more leniency on how we could film. They were excited to let the MotorMavens crew do what we do! So from the first minute cars were on the track the action was unreal... I wanted to make this film a representation of the vibe and feel I got from each stage of the event. I have had so much fun at both these tracks before: Formula D at Evergreen and the crazy tandem events at PGP. I knew that, what ever happened, it was going to interest people, so I edited accordingly. Justin Shreeve was singing the Tom Petty song on the ride back, and that fell in so easily with the Evergreen section. The PGP section was so high energy and I knew Supernova by Loyale, an up-and-coming artist, was going to not only show the difference in pace, but stick in peoples heads leaving them wanting more. Most of all I wanted to use this film to start introducing some of the people I have had the good fortune of meeting these last few months. The Northwest has a group of talented and motivated people bursting with energy, ready to push the limits of media and creativity.
