CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Cooper (Richard Dysart) attempts to revive Norris (Charles Hallahan) with a defibrillator. Shockingly, Norris has become inhabited by the Thing, and as his chest caves in, Cooper's arms are ripped off. MacReady (Kurt Russell) uses the flame thrower on the creature.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Carpenter's The Thing is both a remake of Howard Hawks' 1951 film of the same name and a re-adaptation of the John W. Campbell Jr. story "Who Goes There?" on which it was based. Carpenter's film is more faithful to Campbell's story than Hawks' version and also substantially more reliant on special effects, provided in abundance by a team of over 40 technicians, including veteran creature-effects artists Rob Bottin and Stan Winston. The film opens enigmatically with a Siberian Husky running through the Antarctic tundra, chased by two men in a helicopter firing at it from above. Even after the dog finds shelter at an American research outpost, the men in the helicopter (Norwegians from an outpost nearby) land and keep shooting. One of the Norwegians drops a grenade and blows himself and the helicopter to pieces; the other is shot dead in the snow by Garry (Donald Moffat), the American outpost captain. American helicopter pilot MacReady (Kurt Russell, fresh from Carpenter's Escape From New York) and camp doctor Copper (Richard Dysart) fly off to find the Norwegian base and discover some pretty strange goings-on. The base is in ruins, and the only occupants are a man frozen to a chair (having cut his own throat) and the burned remains of what could be one man or several men. In a side room, Copper and MacReady find a coffin-like block of ice from which something has been recently cut. That night at the American base, the Husky changes into the Thing, and the Americans learn first-hand that the creature has the ability to mutate into anything it kills. For the rest of the film the men fight a losing (and very gory) battle against it, never knowing if one of their own dwindling number is the Thing in disguise. Though resurrected as a cult favorite, The Thing failed at the box office during its initial run, possibly because of its release just two weeks after Steven Spielberg's warmly received E.T.The Extra-Terrestrial. Along with Ridley Scott's futuristic Alien, The Thing helped stimulate a new wave of sci-fi horror films in which action and special effects wizardry were often seen as ends in themselves.

Old Smokey develops a bad temper in this volcanic disaster spectacle. Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) is a volcano expert whose interest became more than academic after he lost the woman he loved in a volcanic emergency. When he is sent to investigate unusual seismic activity in the quiet Pacific Northwest community of Dante's Peak, he discovers people boiled to death in the local hot spring and plant and animal life dying or displaying unusual illnesses near the city's supposedly dormant volcano. Harry becomes convinced that a major volcanic catastrophe is in the cards. Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton), the town's mayor, is a single mother who also runs the local cafe, and now that Dante's Peak has been named one of the most desirable small towns in America, tourists have been flocking to the diner and other local businesses. While concerned with the safety of her community, Rachel takes a cynical view of Harry's warnings about the volcano; she has no desire to alarm either the town's residents or the wealthy visitors lining the city's pockets. Nevertheless, Harry tries to convince Rachel of the potential danger, as they begin to develop feelings for each other that are not strictly professional. The summer of 1997 was a big season for killer volcanoes at the movies, as Dante's Peak and Volcano opened within a few months of each other.

Charles Hallahan
Charles Hallahan (born Charles John Hallahan on July 29, 1943 – died on November 25, 1997) was an American film, television and stage actor known for his performances in Going in Style, The Thing, Cast a Deadly Spell, and Dante's Peak.
Life and career
Hallahan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated from Rutgers University, then going on to Temple University to earn a Master's degree in fine arts. During his acting career he was often cast as a police officer, and is possibly best known to TV viewers as LAPD Captain Charlie Devane on Hunter. He was memorable for his portrayal of the nameless "Coach" in Vision Quest, opposite Matthew Modine. He also served in the US Navy in the early 1960s, including time as a Navy hospital corpsmen stationed in Puerto Rico.
His two most famous film roles, arguably, were as the geologist Vance Norris in John Carpenter's The Thing and as the volcanologist Dr. Paul Dreyfus in Dante's Peak.
Hallahan also co-starred as a regular cast member in two popular television series, Grace Under Fire and the long-running The Paper Chase. He has a brother, Fr. Kenneth Hallahan, a Roman Catholic priest in New Jersey.

When he is sent to investigate unusual seismic activity in the quiet Pacific Northwest community of Dante's Peak, he discovers people boiled to death in the local hot spring and plant and animal life dying or displaying unusual illnesses near the city's supposedly dormant volcano. While concerned with the safety of her community, Rachel takes a cynical view of Harry's warnings about the volcano; she has no desire to alarm either the town's residents or the wealthy visitors lining the city's pockets. Nevertheless, Harry tries to convince Rachel of the potential danger, as they begin to develop feelings for each other that are not strictly professional. John Carpenter's The Thing is both a remake of Howard Hawks' 1951 film of the same name and a re-adaptation of the John W. Campbell Jr. story "Who Goes There?" on which it was based. Carpenter's film is more faithful to Campbell's story than Hawks' version and also substantially more reliant on special effects, provided in abundance by a team of over 40 technicians, including veteran creature-effects artists Rob Bottin and Stan Winston. The film opens enigmatically with a Siberian Husky running through the Antarctic tundra, chased by two men in a helicopter firing at it from above. Even after the dog finds shelter at an American research outpost, the men in the helicopter (Norwegians from an outpost nearby) land and keep shooting. One of the Norwegians drops a grenade and blows himself and the helicopter to pieces; the other is shot dead in the snow by Garry (Donald Moffat), the American outpost captain. American helicopter pilot MacReady (Kurt Russell, fresh from Carpenter's Escape From New York) and camp doctor Copper (Richard Dysart) fly off to find the Norwegian base and discover some pretty strange goings-on. The base is in ruins, and the only occupants are a man frozen to a chair (having cut his own throat) and the burned remains of what could be one man or several men. In a side room, Copper and MacReady find a coffin-like block of ice from which something has been recently cut. That night at the American base, the Husky changes into the Thing, and the Americans learn first-hand that the creature has the ability to mutate into anything it kills. For the rest of the film the men fight a losing (and very gory) battle against it, never knowing if one of their own dwindling number is the Thing in disguise. Though resurrected as a cult favorite, The Thing failed at the box office during its initial run, possibly because of its release just two weeks after Steven Spielberg's warmly received E.T.The Extra-Terrestrial. Along with Ridley Scott's futuristic Alien, The Thing helped stimulate a new wave of sci-fi horror films in which action and special effects wizardry were often seen as ends in themselves.

Old Smokey develops a bad temper in this volcanic disaster spectacle. Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) is a volcano expert whose interest became more than academic after he lost the woman he loved in a volcanic emergency. When he is sent to investigate unusual seismic activity in the quiet Pacific Northwest community of Dante's Peak, he discovers people boiled to death in the local hot spring and plant and animal life dying or displaying unusual illnesses near the city's supposedly dormant volcano. Harry becomes convinced that a major volcanic catastrophe is in the cards. Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton), the town's mayor, is a single mother who also runs the local cafe, and now that Dante's Peak has been named one of the most desirable small towns in America, tourists have been flocking to the diner and other local businesses. While concerned with the safety of her community, Rachel takes a cynical view of Harry's warnings about the volcano; she has no desire to alarm either the town's residents or the wealthy visitors lining the city's pockets. Nevertheless, Harry tries to convince Rachel of the potential danger, as they begin to develop feelings for each other that are not strictly professional. The summer of 1997 was a big season for killer volcanoes at the movies, as Dante's Peak and Volcano opened within a few months of each other.

If Culturedog Sam Hatch were to find himself stranded in an Antarctic science outpost with a crew of paranoid frenemies and an unfrozen shape-shifting alien – he wouldn’t care much as long as he had a computer chess game and a handful of John Carpenter films to pass the time.
But if he were forced to only bring five Carpenter films, the 1982 pseudo-remake of the 1951 Christian Nyby Red Scare sci-fi/horror classic “The Thing” (From Another World!) would absolutely make the cut. More than 30 years later, the film that disappointed at the box office only to become a genuine contender for “best remake ever” status still satisfies. In a creepy, unsettling fashion of course.

Histoire : D'étranges débris sont retrouvés sur le champ d'un éleveur de la région en juillet 1947. Selon les supérieurs du Major Jesse Marcel, il ne s'agit de rien de plus qu'un ballon météo. Mais le militaire est déterminé à éclaircir ce mystère.
À mi-chemin entre le téléfilm et le docu-fiction, "Roswell" est depuis passé relativement inaperçu, ce qui peut lui donner plus d’intérêt dans un certain sens, car tiré d'une affaire réelle, et à un moment où nombre d'investigations interpellaient un large public, cette réalisation de 1994 signée Jeremy Kagan explore pourtant avec brio l'affaire Roswell, en particulier à travers les yeux du Major Jesse Marcel, personnage principal incarné par Kyle MacLachlan, très convaincant en militaire désabusé, pris entre le sceau du top-secret et la quête de vérité. Il faut aussi noter la présence d'excellents seconds couteaux, et tout d'abord Martin Sheen, qui par une intervention tardive se rattrape par un sans-faute. Notons aussi la présence de Charles Martin Smith en Shérif des années 40, un Dwight Yoakam en Mac Brazel, Xander Berkeley également, on reconnaîtra bien sûr Charles Hallahan (connu notamment pour son rôle dans The Thing de 82), ainsi qu'une multitude de bons acteurs. Le scénario nous propose des changements fréquents d'époques, et nous fait ainsi voyager entre 1947 et 1977, où deux périodes se côtoient à défaut de pouvoir briser le mur du silence, mais c'est sans compter sur la ténacité du Major Marcel, bien décidé à comprendre pourquoi tant d'années passées à être tenu à l'écart... Mais à l'écart de quoi ?... Et pour quelles raisons ?... Aussi, l'histoire et la musique (bien composée au passage) du film vont crescendo, jusqu'à la dernière partie, le point de discorde pour certains, le moment de vérité pour d'autres. Sur ces mots, je n'en dirai pas plus, et laisse chacun voir (et revoir) ce téléfilm que l'on peut estimer de par sa capacité à tenir en haleine, et sa volonté de nous offrir du bon cinéma.

Dr. Cooper (Richard Dysart) attempts to revive Norris (Charles Hallahan) with a defibrillator. Shockingly, Norris has become inhabited by the Thing, and as his chest caves in, Cooper's arms are ripped off. MacReady (Kurt Russell) uses the flame thrower on the creature.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Carpenter's The Thing is both a remake of Howard Hawks' 1951 film of the same name and a re-adaptation of the John W. Campbell Jr. story "Who Goes There?" on which it was based. Carpenter's film is more faithful to Campbell's story than Hawks' version and also substantially more reliant on special effects, provided in abundance by a team of over 40 technicians, including veteran creature-effects artists Rob Bottin and Stan Winston. The film opens enigmatically with a Siberian Husky running through the Antarctic tundra, chased by two men in a helicopter firing at it from above. Even after the dog finds shelter at an American research outpost, the men in the helicopter (Norwegians from an outpost nearby) land and keep shooting. One of the Norwegians drops a grenade and blows himself and the helicopter to pieces; the other is shot dead in the snow by Garry (Donald Moffat), the American outpost captain. American helicopter pilot MacReady (Kurt Russell, fresh from Carpenter's Escape From New York) and camp doctor Copper (Richard Dysart) fly off to find the Norwegian base and discover some pretty strange goings-on. The base is in ruins, and the only occupants are a man frozen to a chair (having cut his own throat) and the burned remains of what could be one man or several men. In a side room, Copper and MacReady find a coffin-like block of ice from which something has been recently cut. That night at the American base, the Husky changes into the Thing, and the Americans learn first-hand that the creature has the ability to mutate into anything it kills. For the rest of the film the men fight a losing (and very gory) battle against it, never knowing if one of their own dwindling number is the Thing in disguise. Though resurrected as a cult favorite, The Thing failed at the box office during its initial run, possibly because of its release just two weeks after Steven Spielberg's warmly received E.T.The Extra-Terrestrial. Along with Ridley Scott's futuristic Alien, The Thing helped stimulate a new wave of sci-fi horror films in which action and special effects wizardry were often seen as ends in themselves.

Harry becomes convinced that a major volcanic catastrophe is in the cards. Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton), the town's mayor, is a single mother who also runs the local cafe, and now that Dante's Peak has been named one of the most desirable small towns in America, tourists have been flocking to the diner and other local businesses. While concerned with the safety of her community, Rachel takes a cynical view of Harry's warnings about the volcano; she has no desire to alarm either the town's residents or the wealthy visitors lining the city's pockets. Nevertheless, Harry tries to convince Rachel of the potential danger, as they begin to develop feelings for each other that are not strictly professional. The summer of 1997 was a big season for killer volcanoes at the movies, as Dante's Peak and Volcano opened within a few months of each other.

Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton), the town's mayor, is a single mother who also runs the local cafe, and now that Dante's Peak has been named one of the most desirable small towns in America, tourists have been flocking to the diner and other local businesses. While concerned with the safety of her community, Rachel takes a cynical view of Harry's warnings about the volcano; she has no desire to alarm either the town's residents or the wealthy visitors lining the city's pockets. Nevertheless, Harry tries to convince Rachel of the potential danger, as they begin to develop feelings for each other that are not strictly professional. The summer of 1997 was a big season for killer volcanoes at the movies, as Dante's Peak and Volcano opened within a few months of each other.

Old Smokey develops a bad temper in this volcanic disaster spectacle. Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) is a volcano expert whose interest became more than academic after he lost the woman he loved in a volcanic emergency. When he is sent to investigate unusual seismic activity in the quiet Pacific Northwest community of Dante's Peak, he discovers people boiled to death in the local hot spring and plant and animal life dying or displaying unusual illnesses near the city's supposedly dormant volcano. Harry becomes convinced that a major volcanic catastrophe is in the cards. If Culturedog Sam Hatch were to find himself stranded in an Antarctic science outpost with a crew of paranoid frenemies and an unfrozen shape-shifting alien – he wouldn’t care much as long as he had a computer chess game and a handful of John Carpenter films to pass the time. Histoire : D'étranges débris sont retrouvés sur le champ d'un éleveur de la région en juillet 1947. Selon les supérieurs du Major Jesse Marcel, il ne s'agit de rien de plus qu'un ballon météo. Mais le militaire est déterminé à éclaircir ce mystère.
À mi-chemin entre le téléfilm et le docu-fiction, "Roswell" est depuis passé relativement inaperçu, ce qui peut lui donner plus d’intérêt dans un certain sens, car tiré d'une affaire réelle, et à un moment où nombre d'investigations interpellaient un large public, cette réalisation de 1994 signée Jeremy Kagan explore pourtant avec brio l'affaire Roswell, en particulier à travers les yeux du Major Jesse Marcel, personnage principal incarné par Kyle MacLachlan, très convaincant en militaire désabusé, pris entre le sceau du top-secret et la quête de vérité. Il faut aussi noter la présence d'excellents seconds couteaux, et tout d'abord Martin Sheen, qui par une intervention tardive se rattrape par un sans-faute. Notons aussi la présence de Charles Martin Smith en Shérif des années 40, un Dwight Yoakam en Mac Brazel, Xander Berkeley également, on reconnaîtra bien sûr Charles Hallahan (connu notamment pour son rôle dans The Thing de 82), ainsi qu'une multitude de bons acteurs. Le scénario nous propose des changements fréquents d'époques, et nous fait ainsi voyager entre 1947 et 1977, où deux périodes se côtoient à défaut de pouvoir briser le mur du silence, mais c'est sans compter sur la ténacité du Major Marcel, bien décidé à comprendre pourquoi tant d'années passées à être tenu à l'écart... Mais à l'écart de quoi ?... Et pour quelles raisons ?... Aussi, l'histoire et la musique (bien composée au passage) du film vont crescendo, jusqu'à la dernière partie, le point de discorde pour certains, le moment de vérité pour d'autres. Sur ces mots, je n'en dirai pas plus, et laisse chacun voir (et revoir) ce téléfilm que l'on peut estimer de par sa capacité à tenir en haleine, et sa volonté de nous offrir du bon cinéma.
